Opis:
Samples for research were selected in the course of route surveys of plants of the Botanical Garden named after. acad. A.V. Fomin, National Botanical Garden. N. Grishko National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and parks, squares, street plantations of plane trees inKyiv. Platanus identification using the lacemaker's bug (Corythucha ciliate Say), uses a light microscope and a smartphone with the «Magnifier Cam software». For the first time,we found damage to the leaves of the plane tree Platanus x acerifolia (Ait.) by the bug Corythucha ciliata Say in Kyiv. This is the northernmost border of the phytophage distribution in Ukraine. The phytophage was found in six of the nine surveyed habitats of Platanus acerifolia (50°41'83'' N, 30°56'37'' E; 50°43'99''N, 30°51'83''E; 50°26'99'' N, 30°94'99'' E; 50°26'42''N, 30°32'01''E; 50°39'35''N, 30°50'66''E; 50°38'22''N, 30°47'73''E). The bug was not found in the Botanical Garden named after acad. A.V. Fomin. A high degree of sycamore bug damage was observed on plants growing in habitats. 50°39'35''N, 30°50'66''E (4.7 point) and 50°38'22''N, 30°47'73''E (2.9 point). Bedbugs prefer the south side of the trunk for wintering (72.3% of individuals). The ratio of females and males on the southern side was 2,5/1, on the northern side – 1,7/1. The bug Corythucha ciliata, being under the cork cambium in winter, survives in the natural environment when the temperature drops to -22 °С (duration – four days).

Opis:
This study examined the impact of air pollution, and more specifically the impact of traffic, on the health of urban trees. Due to the lack of data sets, urban tree growth modeling often relies on the existing knowledge of forest. However, urban trees differ from forest trees. One of the aims of the study is to fill the lacunae in this field. It was hypothesized that in streets with higher traffic volume, both growth parameters and health status of trees would be decreased in comparison to trees growing in streets with lower traffic volume. Four of the most common tree species growing in Berlin were selected: Tilia cordata Mill., Acer platanoides L., Platanus acerifolia (Aiton) Willd., and Aesculus hippocastanum L. Apart from the tree age and stand position (high and low traffic volume), the height and circumference were measured and the following traits were analyzed: trunk condition, crown defoliation, leaf discoloration, the presence of hollows and nests. The streets that were selected for the analysis were located in the center of Berlin. For each species, four streets with high traffic volume and four streets with low traffic volume were chosen. The car traffic volume had a significant impact on growth parameters. Significant differences in height and circumference between trees growing on streets with low or high traffic volume were noticed; the higher the traffic volume, the lower the tree height and circumference. This tendency is particularly visible in P. acerifolia, T. cordata and A. platanoides. This relation was observed in all species except for A. hippocastanum. In the conditions of high-traffic volume, A. platanoides is thriving revealing the smallest differences in vitali- ty and condition of the crown, trunk and leaves. The greatest differences in the health condition of the trees among the analyzed variants of traffic intensity were observed in the case of T. cordata. Lime trees seem to be most suitable for planting in the streets with lower traffic volume, whereas A. platanoides seems most suitable for planting in the streets with high traffic volume. P. acerifolia, despite its generally good health, is suffering from several progressing diseases. It is worth considering whether it should be gradually replaced with more resistant species. Aesculus, especially A. hippocastanum, are currently the most endangered ones. An alternative to this species can be A. carnea.

Opis:
Ligninolytic enzymes are employed for the production of second-generation biofuel to minimize fuel crisis. Additionally, they play a crucial role in global carbon cycle and a variety of applications in food, agriculture, paper and textile industries. On a large scale production of ligninolytic enzymes, microorganisms can be cultured on lignocellulosic wastes. In the present study, proximate analysis including acid detergent lignin (ADL), acid detergent cellulose (ADC), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid insoluble ash (AIA) were performed for Platanus orientalis (chinar), Bauhinia variegata (orchid tree), Pinus roxburghii (chirpine), wheat straw and wheat husk. Platanus orientalis was selected as substrate because of higher lignin contents for the production of ligninolytic enzymes by Aspergillus flavus. Solid State Fermentation was used and Response Surface Methodology was employed for optimizing various parameters and enzymes production. Maximum production was achieved at temperature 32°C, fermentation period 120 hours, pH 4.5, inoculums size 3.5 mL, substrate mesh size 80 mm, substrate size 7 g. Maximum purification of laccase, manganese peroxidase (MnP) and lignin peroxidase (LiP) was achieved with 50%, 60% and 40% ammonium sulfate respectively and it was enhanced by gel filtration chromatography. Characterization of enzymes shows that Laccase has 35°C optimum temperature, 4.5 pH, 0.289 mM Km and 227.27 μM/ml Vmax. Manganese peroxidase has 30°C optimum temperature, 5.5 pH, 0.538 mM Km and 203.08 μM/ml Vmax. Lignin peroxidase has 30°C optimum temperature, 3 pH, 2 mM Km and 2000 uM/ml Vmax. Protein concentrations found in crude extracts and partially purified enzymes are respectively: laccase 1.78 and 0.71 mg/ml, MnP 1.59 and 0.68 mg/ml. LiP, 1.70 and 0.69 mg/ml.

Opis:
Information is provided on Erysiphe platani, a newly invasive fungus in Ukraine. The anamorph of this North American powdery mildew was first recorded in Ukraine in 1986 on Platanus orientalis in the Nikita Botanical Garden (Crimea). Later, it was found in other localities of the Crimean peninsula, and in Odessa and Odessa region on three species of plane, namely P. × hispanica, P. occidentalis and P. orientalis. Spread of the fungus was epiphytotic. This mildew significantly reduces the ornamental value of plane trees, which are often planted in public open spaces within urban areas of southern Ukraine. Recently, E. platani has formed the teleomorph in this region. Morphologically, the Ukrainian material is slightly different from the species description, viz. appendages are longer (up to 3 times the chasmothecial diam.), often with less compact apices.

Opis:
Wood is an anisotropic material with a complex structure. It is very difficult to examine the properties of complex structured materials. Finite element analysis is a technique that can be used to analyze the mechanical behavior of wood and wood-based materials. The objective of this study is to determine the mechanical properties of Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis L.) wood both experimentally and using finite element analysis. For tensile strength and compressive strength, with the aim of determining the wood’s behavior depending on its anisotropic axes, samples were prepared in three axial directions: radial, tangential and longitudinal. Under the same conditions and with the same dimensions, longitudinal samples were modeled in a computer environment using finite element analysis. ANSYS Multiphysics/LS-DYNA was used for simulation. It was determined that the laboratory results and the simulation results were in good agreement, with a similarity ratio of over 90%.

Opis:
Systematic phenological observations have been carried out in the Dendrological Garden of Agricultural University of Poznań, Park Solacki, Lasek Golęciński, Przybyszewskiego Street, for two years (2003, 2004). The selected species of deciduous trees, as Betula pendula, Corylus avellana, Platanus x hispanica. There was interdependence between the course of flowering process and weather conditions. Long and frosty winter at the turn of 2002/2003 and subzero mean temperatures in the first quarter of 2003 delayed vegetation. Rapid coming of early spring in the year 2004 accelerate the development of generative organs. Each year spring ground frost during flowering did not inhibit this process. All the investigated tree species are anemophilous and produce large amounts of allergenic pollen grain. They cause allergic reactions throughout the whole period of pollen discharge. Male inflorescences in Corylus avellana, blooming very early, are one of the first plants causing allergic reactions., Betula pendula is the next to bloom, followed by Platanus x hispanica. Observations of phenological phases may provide useful information forecasting the beginning of the period of increased pollen concentration in air.
Systematyczne obserwacje fenologiczne byly prowadzone w Ogrodzie Dendrologicznym Akademii Rolniczej w Poznaniu, Parku Solackim, Lasku Golęcińskim i na ulicy Przybyszewskiego w latach 2003-2004. Obiektem obserwacji byly wybrane gatunki drzew - Betula pendula, Corylus avellana i Platanus x hispanica. Analizie poddano zależność pomiędzy warunkami pogodowymi a procesem kwitnienia.

Opis:
Szczecin harbours Poland’s largest London plane tree population. The London plane trees growing in Szczecin’s Żeromski Park were subjected to dendroclimatological research (analyses of signature years and response function). The study was based on a composite site chronology, signed ZER, spanning 105 years (1900–2004); the mean annual tree ring growth was 2.59 mm. Precipitation, particularly that in late winter- early spring and in the summer months was found to be a factor decisive for the tree’s cambial activity. A high sum of precipitation during the periods mentioned induced positive growth responses in the trees. Thermal conditions during the growth period proved to be another factor controlling the annual tree ring growth, as shown by linear relationships. The tree ring growth-climate relationships in the population under study as well as the between-parks differences in the London plane tree response can be explained by differences in habitat conditions. The trees under study grow in the vicinity of a busy, frequently repaired street and are surrounded by pavement and/or hardened road surface, which greatly limits the infiltration of moisture supplied by precipitation.
