Opis:
Chęcińsko-Kielecki Park Krajobrazowy został utworzony w 1996 r., przede wszystkim w celu ochrony wartości geologicznych. Obejmuje on obszar wielowiekowej eksploatacji kopalin, który uległ znacznym przemianom antropogenicznym.

An unusual predator-prey relationship inferred from a Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) nautilid from southern Poland

Opis:
The records of sub-lethally or lethally injured nautilids are rare, as are their Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) occurrences. Here, we report a large nautilid (88 mm shell diameter) from the Polish Jura (southern Poland), which was ventrally bitten at its phragmocone. It is a Cenoceras sp. from the middle Bathonian (Bremeri Zone) of the Gnaszyn brick-pit associated with the ammonite Prohecticoceras. Although coeval strata have yielded records of predatory shark teeth belonging to Palaeobrachaelurus, Protospinax, Sphenodus, and an orectolobiform, the bite traces on the nautilid are morphologically different and are at least 13 times larger, thus ruling out sharks as predators. Other plausible predators include marine reptiles such as pliosaurid plesiosaurs, thalattosuchian crocodylomorphs or ichthyosaurs, other cephalopods such as large squids, ammonites or even nautilids (including cannibalism). Based on the morphology and dimensions of the bite marks, the most likely candidate appears to be a pliosaurid whose remains have been well-recorded from the Middle and Upper Jurassic rocks of Poland. Regarding the predation attempt, it appears to have been lethal but possibly was a failed attack from the right side of the organism, as evidenced by the bite marks on its ventral surface. It is conceivable that the plesiosaur was unable to grasp the thick and presumably slippery nautiloid firmly after the first bite as reflected by the presence of only two 20 mm-wide bite marks, and then dropped the nautilid. Alternatively, it managed to rip the soft parts out of the conch and dropped the latter without further crushing it.

A glimpse of a fish face : an exceptional fish feeding trace fossil from the Lower Devonian of the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland

Opis:
An exceptionally well-preserved assemblage of numerous invertebrate and vertebrate trace fossils is described from the Lower Devonian of the Holy Cross Mountains, southern Poland. Two trace-bearing horizons occur in the shallow-marine sequence that is exposed in a small outcrop near Ujazd village. One of the trace fossils is preserved as a bilobate, generally elliptical, epichnial pit is described as Osculichnus tarnowskae isp. nov. and interpreted as a unique example of praedichnia. Neoichnologic experiments and observations indicate that the ichnogenus Osculichnus was produced by feeding fish. The fish producing O. tarnowskae probably hunted bivalves, polychaetes and arthropods, which are represented by invertebrate trace fossils in the same horizons. The overall shape and morphological details of O. tarnowskae suggest that it was made by a lungfish broadly similar to Dipnorhynchus. The trace provides the first direct evidence for Devonian lungfish feeding behaviour, as well as the first record of three-dimensional soft-tissue morphology of the snout area of an Emsian representative of this group. The trace fossils from Ujazd provide new insight into the palaeoecology and taphonomy of the Lower Devonian of the Holy Cross Mountains.

Opis:
In the years 2007–2024, the diet of Strix aluco was analysed in three sites in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki (central Poland) and in areas directly adjacent to the town. Analysis of pellets revealed the presence of 438 small mammals. The group comprised 17 species belonging to Soricomorpha 3, Chiroptera 4 and Rodentia 10 species. Species most often caught were: Apodemus flavicollis and Microtus arvalis. Soricomorpha were caught rarely and constituted less than 5% of mammals. Nyctalus noctula and Eptesicus serotinus dominated among bats whose total share was 3.2–4.7% of mammalian prey. Species composition of prey indicates that the hunting grounds of owls encompassed a variety of habitats: the neighbourhood of built-up areas, river valley and forested area.

Abstract in Polish. Taxa in Latin
During the 25 seasons (1974-1998), the breeding success of Collared Doves was determined by tracing the fates of 7882 nests found in S3upsk, Northern Poland. The kind of losses recognized were: complete nesting failures (CNF) and partial losses (PL), where only one nestling left the nest. Total breeding losses (TBL), were estimated by comparing the estimated total number of eggs laid (TNEL), with the total number of young fledged. In different years CNF varied from 51.8 to 75.7% ( = 61.1, SD = 5.1, n = 25 seasons, CV = 8%) while PL accounted for between 4.3 and 11.8% ( = 8.2, SD = 1.6, n = 25, CV = 19.5 %) of all eggs laid. TBL amounted to between 60.9 and 80% ( = 69.3, SD = 4.3, n = 25, CV = 6.2 %) of TNEL, and was highest at the beginning (February-April) of the breeding season, and at the end (September-October). The losses suffered during incubation ( = 70.6%, SD = 10.3, n = 25, CV = 15%) were much higher than at the nestling stage ( = 29.4%, SD = 10.3, n = 25, CV = 35%). Rooks and Jackdaws were the main nest predators of the Collared Dove population in S3upsk, while Magpies and domestic cats were less effective predators.
