Opis:
This is the fi rst in a planned series of papers dedicated to Polish Sign Language (PJM) signs denoting speech. It presents an analysis of twenty different signs attested in the Polish Sign Language Corpus (KPJM) in terms of iconicity as well as metonymies and metaphors used in their formation. The conducted analysis showed that two classes of signs can be distinguished in the examined material: iconic signs making use of metonymy and signs motivated by a conceptual metaphor. The former refer exclusively to the production of speech as opposed to signing: the vehicle is the phonetic act (mouth movement or air movement). Metaphoric signs, in turn, consistently rely on the conduit metaphor, refer to both spoken and signed utterances, and focus on transmission of a semantic content.

The article is devoted to the signed narratives created by the deaf communities and presents the attempt of genology of sign narratives they are divided into: deaf-lore (storytelling), cinematographic stories, signed songs and stories with constraints (e.g. ABC or number stories). The main corpus of artwork described and analyzed in the article is signed in American Sign Language, but author tried to take into consideration Polish Sign Language works as well. Apart from the genres and types of the signed narratives author tries to place them in a broader context. Most important is the doubt whether deaf narratives may be considered literature at all, as they do not use words and letters in traditional way. The influence of the moving picture technology is also considered as a powerful boost to the signed narratives.

A professional paradox : the (un)equal balance of the rights and duties of signed language interpreters in Poland

The practice of signed language interpreting in Poland is still subject to ongoing professionalisation processes. The place and status of signed language interpreters are poorly defined both in the national legal regulations and in the common awareness of the hearing as well as Deaf people. It starts with education - interpreters are needed in increasingly demanding situations and settings, yet they have very few opportunities for professional development. They are expected to provide professional services of the highest quality, but with no certification system in place, no quality control is possible. With accessibility being an important issue in Poland, many online events are interpreted into signed language, yet Deaf people struggle to book an interpreter for an in-person medical appointment. In order to work in legal settings, spoken language interpreters must possess highly specialised knowledge and extraordinary language skills which have been confirmed by a state exam, whereas signed language interpreters are appointed to work as expert witnesses based on their experience and recommendations. Throughout our article, we would like to reflect on the current positionality and status of signed language interpreters in Poland from legal, social, and professional perspectives. We will focus on specific paradoxes of the profession consisting of the ambiguous definition of the role of signed language interpreters, and inequalities in terms of their rights and duties, expectations, and benefits.

Opis:
The article discusses the problems of deaf people, Polish sign language as well as Signed Polish (Manually-Coded Polish) in the context of stereotypes held by first year students of special needs education. The analysis of the results of empirical research indicates which of the stereotypes concerning deaf and sign language mentioned in the study are present in the thinking of the social group covered by the research and the frequency of their occurrence. It presents and explains terminological aspects regarding stereotypes and proposes postulates to eliminate negative stereotyping.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to discuss the major differences and similarities between the Corpus of Polish Sign Language (KPJM), which has been developed for a decade by the team of the Section for Sign Linguistics, Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw, and corpora of phonic languages (and in particular the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP)). The KPJM is a general corpus with an ambition to represent the whole language, used by the Polish Deaf. Unlike the corpora of phonic languages, which are collections of existing texts, the material of the KPJM was generated purposefully by recording and annotating an extensive set of videos. The paper shows that the sign language corpus should be viewed as analogous to spoken language corpora rather than to written language corpora. The KPJM can be perceived as a model of Polish Sign Language.

Opis:
Reading skills of D/deaf students fall behind their hearing peers. The difference in reading skills between D/deaf and hearing children has not decreased for over past three decades. Low level of reading skills in D/deaf students has been associated with their language delay, which is mainly observed in D/deaf children using spoken language that is not fully accessible to “D/deaf individuals” instead of “ppl with hearing impairment”. D/deaf children immersed in sign language since their birth usually do not encounter language problems and they have a potential to become highly-skilled readers. In the present studies we have investigated reading skills of D/deaf students who are native signers of Polish Sign Language. The results have indicated that D/deaf students showed lower level of reading skills than their hearing peers. The present studies call in question Polish education system dedicated to D/deaf students who are native signers. The obtained results suggest that reading classes are probably not adapted to the needs and abilities of highly competent signers.

A common problem of natural language processing is synonymy, polysemy, and homonymy. In the paper, we propose to deal with polysemy in the Polish sign language using the knowledge included in the OWL2 ontology created for this purpose. The proposed approach aids the translation process of the Polish sign language into the Polish language by selection from the possible phrases, only those, with the reasonable meaning.

Opis:
The article focuses on finding to what extent the lexical meanings of selected se mantic fields of Polish language coincide with the meanings of Polish sign language lexemes. Selected semantic fields from the Great Dictionary of Polish Language edited by Piotr Żmigrodzki (www.wsjp.pl) and the Corpus Dictionary of Polish Sign Language (www.slownikpjm.uw.edu.pl) were analysed. The extracted lexical items from both corpora were subjected to comparative analysis to see to what extent their ranges of meaning overlap in both dictionaries.

Opis:
Democratization of social life in Poland after political transformation of 1989 meant that people with disabilities, including the deaf began to participate in social life actively and demand the ability to use full rights of citizenship. Active presence in the public space requires a constant, uninterrupted communication. In order to improve communication it is necessary to teach the hearing ways to communicate they use to encourage the deaf and the hearing to acquire these skills. First of all, the so-called linguistic-sign system (SJM), which uses visual-spatial channel to communicate, is used for communication. Polish Sign Language (PJM) became an innovation in search for better communication between the hearing and the deaf since the first years of the 21st century. Dissemination of the Polish Sign Language (PJM) and teaching this language to the hearing gives more opportunities to communicate the deaf with the hearing. Skills of using Polish sign language are essential in everyday public life interactions in institutions of public administration and health services or places of culture.
