Opis:
Ireland has become one of the main destination countries for Polish migrants after Poland’s EU accession in 2004. While much of the literature on Polish migration to Ireland post-2004 focuses on its labour-market element, in this paper we analyse the political participation of Polish migrants. We utilise data from a survey conducted by the Centre of Migration Research (University of Warsaw) with Polish migrants in Ireland which documents low levels of political engagement as measured by voting turnout in Polish presidential and parliamentary elections as well as the Irish local elections and elections to the European Parliament.A lack of knowledge about political participation rights or how to engage in voting is one explanation for the low levels of voting, especially in Irish local and European parliamentiary elections. Another explanation may be the attitude that migrants have towards the political system and how they can influence it. Polish migrants predominantly report that they have no or little influence on politics in Poland and have relatively less trust in the authorities and politicians there (compared to Ireland). The key individual-level characteristic affecting Polish migrant respondents’ electoral participation in Ireland is their (lack of) voting habit formed before migration.

Childbearing behaviours of Polish migrants in Norway

Opis:
The chapter explores the aspects of childbearing, procreation plans and fertility among Polish migrant couples and families settled in Norway. It tackles the migration-fertility nexus by engaging with five hypotheses put forward by Milewski (2007) and sheds light on childbearing decision and the germane topics linked to fertility in the Polish-Norwegian transnationality. Through an integrated analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data, the chapter explores the links between mobility and a desire (and lack thereof) to have children, as well as the reasons for having more children. It outlines some issues around the timing of a first-time-parenthood and having subsequent children abroad, seeing them through a migration lens, i.e. experienced in a distinctively different cultural setting of Norway. The empirical material is guided by a mixed-methods approach and combines two datasets from (he Transfam project: the quantitative data collected through an on-line survey (n=648) and (he qualitative material from biographic interviews. The results confirm the hypothesis of a one-spouse migration being disruptive to fertility, while also pointing to the catching-up fer- (i I ity behaviours. We argue that an interrelation of family biographic events, and a fulfilment of the family’s procreation desires, occur after the reunification and settlement in Norway.

Opis:

Opis:
The main task of the paper is to analyse the socio-familial aspects of the newest migration flows from Poland to Ireland that have been taking place since 2004. In order to examine this migratory phenomenon I apply a three-level analysis: on the macro-level I study statistical demographic data obtained from the Irish population censuses; on the mezzo-level I use a longitudinal (3-year) survey carried out within a selected immigrant subpopulation; on the micro-level I analyse 30 unstructured interviews with Polish immigrants. The results show that Polish emigration to Ireland is, first of all, driven by economic factors. Nonetheless, the socio-familial conditions and marital strategies also play a significant role in the processes of shaping one’s migratory experiences. The paper concludes that many Polish emigrants, including those who constituted the first flow of immigration to Ireland, are well-settled at the destination. The socio-familial circumstances become a critical factor in choosing their migration strategy.

Opis:
After Poland’s accession to the European Union and the opening of the Norwegian market for Polish employees, the gender structure of Polish migrants in Norway changed radically. The number of men increased rapidly in relation to the number of women due to the demand of the Norwegian labor market for employees in the construction industry. For several years, the number of women has been growing slightly faster than the number of men due to family reunification. Poles living in Norway are relatively young and well-educated. Research carried out so far indicates that Polish migrants experience many problems finding employment that is in line with their education (Czapka 2010; Huang, Krzaklewska, Pustulka 2016). The article presents partial results of qualitative research carried out in Oslo in 2015 among Polish assistants working in Norwegian kindergartens in the framework of the project “Barnehagen som tillitsarena: hvordan lages den flerkulturelle samfunnskontrakten?”, which is part of the Polish-Norwegian project POLFAMIGRA (“Polish female migrants and their families – a study of care deficit “). The research results indicate that the work of an assistant in a kindergarten is for many Polish women the next stage in their professional careers in Norway and is often perceived in terms of career advancement. For the part of women participating in the study, work in the kindergarten was to be only a temporary type of employment, which was to ensure their income until they find a job consistent with their education. Most of them believed that their work does not enjoy high social prestige and is associated with relatively low wages.

Opis:
The article refers to research carried out at the Migration and Ethnic Relations department of the Faculty of Anthropology and Sociology at Paris Diderot University in 2008-2009. The paper describes the gradual process of changes associated with the opening of the labor market to Polish immigrants in France and its impact on adaptation strategies of Poles taking up unauthorised employment. The first part of the article analyses Poles’ immigration in the context of selected aspects of employment in France. In the second part, examples of immigrant strategies show how the adaptation processes have evolved over several years. The paper also describes how competition arises on the labor market of unauthorised work and the ethnicisation of social roles. The third, major part, analyses the role of social networks in the context of an access to the labor market under different systems of recruitment. This part also presents the case of Kolbuszowa – and the phenomenon of integration or exclusion of new members of this immigrant community among which migration networks have developed. The transition from the gray area to the legal labour force is analyzed in terms of labour context impact and the position of an immigrant in a given community.

Opis:
Poles represent one of the largest groups of economic immigrants to the UK. As a result of Brexit, many of them have redefined their migration scenarios, which has affected the economy and some areas of social and cultural life in the UK. This paper presents the results of our original quantitative study conducted in the autumn of 2019 on a sample of 620 Polish respondents living in three locations in England – London, Oxford, and Swindon. The study addresses the question Do Polish migrants intend to return to Poland, and if they do, when? and examines to what extent this decision is influenced by the length of their stay in England, by their financial situation, by their knowledge of English, by their ability to assimilate culturally, by how much they miss their family, by homesickness, and by their craving for Polish culture. The article follows the typology of attitudes adopted by Poles towards Brexit, as identified by Agnieszka Trąbka and Paulina Pustułka.

Transnational Polish families in Norway the entanglements between migration trajectory and labor

Opis:
A continuing importance of extended kin in the globalized world has been pinpointed by studies in sociology of family (Mason 2011, Charles et al. 2008), and particularly highlighted by migration research on transnational kin (Goulbourne et al. 2010). Under this premise, we look at the lives of Polish migrant families (parents, children and beyond) as defined as embedded in the dynamically constructed practices of managing ties and kin relationship beyond national borders (Bryceson & Vuorela 2003), signifying a constant interplay of ethnic identity components from the countries of origin, destination and beyond (e.g. Goulbourne et al. 2010, Reynolds 2008). In a nutshell, we thrive towards examining multi-sited/ transnational/ cross-border family practices found in Polish family migrants parenting in Norway.
