- This introductory chapter presents the core assumptions, objectives and structure of the edited volume dedicated to the multifaceted role of natural resources in global politics and development. It emphasises that access to and control over key resources - whether energy, minerals or water - continue to shape the historical and contemporary trajectories of states and societies. While resources can enable economic growth, strengthen geopolitical influence, and support technological progress, they may also become drivers of instability, social inequality, and conflict when managed poorly or exploited without regard for local communities. The book offers a multidisciplinary and regionally diverse perspective on these challenges. It is organised into three thematic sections: the influence of resources on regional power relations, the links between resource management, economic development and institutional quality, and the political as well as environmental repercussions of extraction. Together, the contributions aim to improve understanding of the complexities of resource dependency and the governance dilemmas faced by both developed and developing states in an era of increasing global competition for strategic materials.
