Opis:
Background. The aim of this work was to find out which of the aeroallergens most often cause positive skin prick tests in the population with allergic diseases. Depending on the type of allergens, exposure to them can aggravate asthma symptoms and cause allergic conjunctivitis and allergic rhinitis. Material and methods. A group of 100 people between 18 and 78 years of age were included in the study. The average age was 45.8 years. There were 34 men and 66 women in the group. All patients were allergy clinic patients. The results of point skin tests for the basic aeroallergen panel were analyzed in this study and summarized using descriptive statistics. Results. Sixty subjects had positive tests for dust mites. Most subjects were allergic to two allergens. Monovalent allergy was found in 10 subjects. Multivalent allergy was predominant, but tended to involve relatively few allergens. Conclusions. The results obtained may be due to year-round exposure to the house dust mite allergen. Prolonged allergen exposure translates into more frequent immune responses and greater clinical response of patients, which is manifested by allergic rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma or allergic conjunctivitis. Due to the small patient population studied, this subject requires further analysis.

Opis:
Background: The basis for qualification for venom immunotherapy (VIT) is the fulfilment of both the clinical and immunological criteria. Diagnostic tests that confirm the immunological criterion of an IgE-mediated sensitization include skin prick tests (SPT), intradermal tests (IDT), and serum specific IgE (sIgE) for the culprit venom. Objective: This study aimed to assess the usefulness of SPT as the immunological marker in the diagnosis of insect venom sensitization in children with history of systemic reaction (SR) to insect sting evaluated by means of I-IV-grades Mueller’s scale. There are no such studies in children. Methods: This cross-sectional study sample consisted of 416 children aged 3-18 years (mean age 10.6 $\pm$ 3.8), 76% males, all with the history of a systemic reaction (SR) after a Hymenoptera sting (48% of grade III/IV according to Mueller scale), diagnosed between 1999 and 2019 in the tertiary referral centre. The standard diagnostic tests were used. Specificity, sensitivity, and positive and negative predictive values were computed to assess the diagnostic properties of the clinical tests to distinguish between mild and severe SR. To assess the relative value of an individual test in predicting the qualification to VIT we incorporated the Shapley value (SV). Results: Positive SPT results were found in up to no more than 3% of children; among them less than 1% had only positive SPT and were negative for sIgE and IDT. Approximately 85% of the children had detectable venom sIgE, followed by positive IDT (75%). Almost 70% of children had positive both sIgE and IDT results. In children with grade III/IV reaction, about 80% of children had positive results of both of these tests. sIgE and IDT had sensitivity >0.80, whereas SPT had high specificity (>0.97) in differentiating between mild and severe SR. Relative value of diagnostic tests in predicting qualification to VIT varied between venoms. Bee venom IDT had higher SV (0.052) than sIgE (0.041). In contrast, wasp venom sIgE had higher SV (0.075) than IDT (0.035). Conclusion: SPTs are not an useful immunological marker of venom sensitization in children, and eliminating SPT does not result in a loss of diagnostic accuracy. Limiting diagnostics to venom sIgE and IDT would shorten the procedure and reduce costs. Future studies are needed to determine if venom sIgE as the first line diagnostic test, with IDT added only if the venom sIgE is undetectable, is an optimal diagnostic process.

Opis:
Objectives This study explores the association between self-reported exposure to traffic-related air pollution and respiratory health symptoms, as well as lung functions and skin prick tests in adolescents living in the vicinity of main roads. Material and Methods The data in the study were acquired using a cross-sectional study conducted between 2004–2005 in Chorzów (Silesia, Poland) among adolescents (N = 936) aged 13–15 years, attending junior high schools. Adverse respiratory health symptoms and exposure to traffic-related air pollution were determined on the basis of a questionnaire. Moreover, all children underwent spirometry and skin prick tests. Multivariable logistic regression with multiple imputation for missing data was used to assess the prevalence of adverse respiratory symptoms in relation to self-reported exposure to traffic-related air pollution, adjusted for socioeconomic and environmental factors. Results Among respiratory tract diseases, asthma and allergic rhinitis associations were statistically significant (OR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.12–4.15 and OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.08–2.64, respectively). Likewise, among respiratory disorders, statistically significant associations were found in the case of wheezes and dyspnea attack (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.10–2.26 and OR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.56–3.66, respectively), with respect to the vicinity of the main road. Living in the area with high traffic intensity was statistically significantly associated with a higher prevalence of asthma and wheezes (OR = 2.31, 95% CI: 1.22–4.39 and 1.48, 95% CI: 1.09–2.01, respectively). The results obtained did not confirm the relationship between the adopted way of exposure to traffic-related air pollution and lung function indices or skin prick tests. Conclusions Results of the study suggest that children living in the area with intense traffic are more likely to develop respiratory disorders. Moreover, the vicinity of a main road as well as traffic intensity could be suitable in assessing the relationship between road transport and potential health problems among exposed inhabitants. Opis:
Objectives We examined the prevalence of latex allergy in subjects with occupational exposure to latex allergens for less than 5 years, determining the disease spectrum in symptomatic workers. We identified the most frequent molecular allergens by Immuno- CAP (ICAP), correlating the findings with skin prick test (SPT) results. Material and Methods Seven hundred twenty-three healthcare students using latex gloves on a regular basis were invited to participate in a baseline questionnaire screening. An ICAP serum test was performed only when a possible latex allergy was indicated by the questionnaire. Results The total number of participants responding to the baseline survey was 619. Glove-related symptoms were indicated by 4% (N = 25) of the students. The most common symptom was contact dermatitis (N = 18, 72%). In 12 subjects, ICAP revealed a real sensitization to latex, with a recombinant latex allergen profile showing a high frequency for rHev b 6.01 specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) (N = 9, 67%). In these individuals, skin symptoms were more prevalent than other types (88%). Conclusions The combined positivity for rHev b 6.01, rHev 8 and rHev b 5 determined by ICAP identified 92% of latex-allergic subjects with short-term exposure to latex.

Opis:
Alergiczny nieżyt nosa występuje w różnych regionach świata od 10 do 40% populacji. Test skin prick jest „złotym standardem” do wykrywania chorób alergicznych typu I według klasyfikacji Gella i Coombsa, w której pośredniczy IgE. Badania za pomocą testów Skin Prick wykonano u 60 nurków w wieku od 30 do 40 roku życia. Do badania zastosowano następujące testy powietrznopochodne: pyłki drzew, traw, zbóż, chwastów, białka roztoczy kurzu domowego, sierść i naskórek zwierząt oraz grzyby pleśniowe. Na podstawie wywiadu i dodatniego testu skin prick u 17 nurków stwierdzono alergiczny nieżyt nosa. Wnioski: 1. Alergiczny nieżyt nosa może powodować problemy zdrowotne u nurków i być przyczyną wypadków nurkowych. 2. Zastosowanie testu Skin Prick podczas kwalifikacji zdrowotnej w Wojskowej Komisji Morsko-Lekarskiej, pozwoliłoby wykluczyć kandydatów na nurków chorujących na alergię.
Allergic rhinitis occurs in various regions of the world and affects from 10 to 40% of the population. The skin prick test is the "gold standard" for the detection of type I allergic diseases according to the Gella and Coombs classification, which is mediated by IgE. For our experiment, skin prick tests were performed on 60 divers aged between 30 and 40 years of age. The following tests for airborne allergens were used: tests for pollen from trees, grasses, cereals, weeds, proteins from house dust mites, animal hair and epidermis, and moulds. On the basis of an interview and a positive skin prick test allergic rhinitis was diagnosed in 17 divers. Conclusions: 1. Allergic rhinitis can cause health problems in divers and be the cause of diving accidents. 2. The application of the skin prick test during the health qualification in the Military Maritime Health Commission, would allow the exclusion of diver candidates suffering from allergies.

Opis:
Background: Allergic disorders are among the most common health problems, have a high impact on patients’ quality of life and constitute a significant economic burden. Pollen grains are the most significant trigger of allergic symptoms. Knowing pollen allergy potency of common plants in each area is essential for preventing allergic symptoms. Objective: This study aims to evaluate allergic sensitivity to local plant pollen among medical students in East of Iran using skin prick test Methods: Types of allergenic pollen grains were determined based on geoclimatic factors. Ten different pollen grains from common regional plants, including Eucalyptus tree, Helianthus trees, Rosa damascene flowers, Jasminum sp flowers, Chinaberry trees (Melia azedarach), pomegranate trees, black olive trees, pistachio trees, Palm trees, and Crambe cordifolia flowers, as well as seven standard commercial extracts including grass mixture, tree mixture, Fraxinus, Amaranthus retroflexus, Cypress, Betula, and Prosopis pollens were collected. After purification, the aqueous extract was prepared from each pollen. Skin prick test with ten domestic extracts and some commercial extracts was performed on the participants. The ethics committee of Birjand University of Medical Sciences approved the study and all participants signed consent form. Results: One hundred and twelve volunteer medical students (mean age: 22.29 range: 19 to 34 years, M/F ratio:1.1) enrolled in this study. The overall frequency of sensitivity to any allergenic extracts was reported at 80.59%. In domestic pollen, the highest skin sensitivity rate was for Eucalyptus pollen, Rosa damascene flowers pollen, and Jasminum sp pollen (59.3%, 53.1%, and 50.0%, respectively). In the case of commercial extract, Amaranthus retroflexus and the tree mixture pollens were the most common (66.6% and 45.7%, respectively). Conclusion: This study showed high allergic potency of some common regional plants, including Rose flower, Eucalyptus tree, and Jasminum sp flower.
Materiał i metody: Typy uczulających pyłków dobrane zostały w oparciu o analizę danych geoklimatycznych. W przypadku pyłków roślin lokalnych największe odczyny skórne stwierdzono dla pyłków drzewa Eucalyptus, kwiatów Rosa damascene i Jasminum sp (odpowiednio 59,3%, 53,1% i 50,0%). W odniesieniu do ekstraktów dostępnych komercyjnie najczęściej stwierdzano uczulenia na Amaranthus retroflexus i mieszaninę pyłków drzew (odpowiednio 66,6% i 45,7%). Wnioski: Wyniki badań wskazują na wysoką siłę alergizującą niektórych pospolitych roślin regionalnych, w tym kwiatu róży, drzewa eukaliptusa i kwiatu jaśminu.
