Contribution of the Polish-German Mental Health Society to changes in Polish psychiatry
Zaangażowanie Polsko-Niemieckiego Towarzystwa Zdrowia Psychicznego w przemiany psychiatrii polskiej
Opis:
The aim of this presentation is to give a profile of the history and work of the Polish- German Mental Health Society (PNTZP). Founded in 1990, the PNTZP’s supreme objective is to develop and reinforce partnership between Polish and German psychiatry on a range of levels. The methods it uses to further this aim include bilateral meetings, seminars, and annual symposia. In view of its historical roots, the PNTZP is constantly mindful of the excesses perpetrated on the mentally ill during the National Socialist period, and believes it has an obligation to promote a brand of psychiatry founded on the person, respect for human dignity, and the will and individuality of every man. For this reason, ethics are an essential element of discussion, including discussions with patients and their families. The society advocates the implementation of the National Programme of Mental Health Care and the development of community psychiatry in Poland. It supports the development of various structures for the treatment and assistance of people with mental illness, as well as scientific and academic reflection on the social and cultural implications of psychiatric thought and action. It is committed to facilitating the exchange of experiences between different professional groups, patients, and their families in order to promote mutual inspiration and support in the challenging task of developing psychiatry. A record of these years of meetings may be found in the twenty issues of the periodical Dialog. This example of cooperation across official state borders may be held up as a benchmark for the development of European psychiatry, and the joint work and discussions may offer help and inspiration in day-to-day therapeutic practice. The PNTZP is open to new people and initiatives, and is always looking for people willing to get involved in its work.

Postpsychiatry and postmodern psychotherapy : theoretical and ethical issues in mental health care in a Polish context
Autorzy:
Stupak, Radosław
Dyga, Krzysztof
Opis:
The article reconstructs postpsychiatry’s core propositions and briefly describes its theoretical background and assumptions. It also presents chosen aspects of postmodern psychotherapy, which seem to be in many ways similar to postpsychiatry’s ideas. Although they are drawn from different inspiration, postpsychiatry and postmodern psychotherapy seem to come to similar conclusions, especially regarding the role of the patient in the therapeutic process, the meaning of psychiatric diagnosis, and the importance of the institutional, cultural, and social contexts in mental health practice and research. The paper also aims to place postpsychiatry and postmodern psychotherapy in a Polish context, focusing on the ethical challenges faced by psychiatry and showing that some of postpsychiatry’s ideas and solutions to contemporary problems were already present in the Polish psychiatric literature of the 20th century. It also contains a brief description of the Polish social and historical context of psychiatry, as well as key aspects of the Polish legal system that relate to mental health and seem to reflect the nature of biomedical explanations of mental distress. It concludes that the model of psychiatric care postulated by "postmodern" approaches seems more ethical and scientifically and philosophically grounded and promises better treatment results than the "traditional" biomedical model.

Narratives about psychiatry and psychiatrists, which appear in texts of culture, are clearly negative. Nevertheless, media images are the main source of common knowledge concerning the field. Several strategies of stereotyping psychiatrists in movie images can be distinguished. Social attitudes towards psychiatry, including these present among medical specialists, as well as psychiatrists themselves, reflect similar areas of devaluation. These problem fields are a valuable source of information about current problems within the discipline, and the condition of the cultural reality in which it is immersed.

Opis:
The term “anti-psychiatry” was coined in 1912 by Dr. Bernhard Beyer, but only popularized by Dr. David Copper (and his critics) in the midst of a widespread cultural revolt against involuntary hospitalization and in-patient psychiatry during the 1960s and 1970s. However, with the demise of the old-fashioned mental hospital, and the rise of Big Pharma (with all its attendant evils), the term “anti-psychiatry” has outlived its usefulness. It survives merely as a term of abuse or a badge of honor, depending on the user and what rhetorical work this label is expected to perform. Those who use the term nowadays generally have a polemical axe to grind, and seldom understand the term’s origins or implications. It is time that serious scholars retire this term, or to restrict its use to R.D.Laing’s followers in the Philadelphia Associates and kindred groups that sprang up in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Opis:
Introduction. Employees of psychiatric hospitals, especially the closed wards, experience aggression almost every day. Aggression in psychiatry is a particularly complex problem and is the subject of numerous studies. In this field of medicine, aggressive behavior of hospitalized patients is treated by the staff as an understandable, but undesirable component of work. The personnel’s confrontation with the above phenomenon is treated as a part of professional duties determined by the place of their performance. Aim. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of aggressive behaviors in patients and to assess their impact on nursing staff employed in psychiatric departments. Material and methods. The study was conducted in 2017 in a group of nursing staff employed at the Clinical Hospital Dr Joseph Babinski in Cracow. The number of 196 nurses participated in the study. It was a cross-sectional study and consisted of one stage – the completion of the research tool by participants. Results. The results showed that 94.39% of the respondents were a victim of aggressive behavior on the part of patients. The most common verbal aggression experienced by the respondents were: verbal taunts, the use of vulgar words by the hospitalized, using offensive nicknames and shouting at the staff, while physical were: destroying hospital property, attempting to hit, throwing objects and destroying own belongings. Conclusions. The scale of the phenomenon of experiencing aggression on the part of patients in the group of nurses working in psychiatric departments indicates the need to conduct research into this subject and also to conduct staff training taking into account coping with aggressive behavior of patients.

Opis:
Aim. An attempt to determine the main research directions currently undertaken in Polish psychiatry. Material and methods. On the basis of the last 15 issues of the bimonthly journal Polish Psychiatry it was attempted to determine the main directions of research, subjected to publications in the bimonthly journal of PTP. The research topics, their authorship and place of origin, as well as bibliometric categories of the publications were analysed. Results. Most of the works concerned the psychopathology, diagnosis and aetiology of mental disorders. There were relatively not many publications concerning pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Of the 370 authors and co-authors, the majority (70%) have published only one article in “Polish Psychiatry”. Empirical publications, especially the original ones, came mainly from academic centers. Sponsorship was rare – most often (15%) in the form of university, Ministry of Science and Higher Education and National Science Centre grants, incidentally (4%) came from pharmaceutical companies. Conclusions. At present, the empirical studies of Polish psychiatrists focus mainly on the aetiopathogenesis of psychoses (both original researches and reviews), mainly in the area of adult psychiatry.
