Tytuł:: In search of Walker's spirit : womanism, race, and queer desire in Blitz Bazawule's "The Color Purple" (2023)

Opis:: The article focuses on Blitz Bazawule's 2023 film adaptation of Alice Walker's "The Color Purple", and analyses how it reconfigures the novel's original political message. The musical, heavily influenced by the novel's previous adaptations, erases and introduces scenes that alter the womanist, queer, and anti-racist spirit of Walker's text. The paper examines how Bazawule's film diminishes the role of women's solidarity within the narrative by introducing the notion of internalized misogyny, and by reinforcing the patriarchal order. It also uses the concept of queer time and space to address the film's staging of queer desire and questions Bazawule's erasure of significant parts of the plot that deal with the issue of American racism.

Opis:: This article examines the different manifestations of alternative temporalities in Ali Smith’s Goldsmiths Award novel How to be Both (2014). My argument is that the novel ‘queers’ understandings of time in two significant ways: by highlighting new possibilities of narrative structure that challenge linear conceptions of time and by questioning regulated notions of developmental temporalities in terms of progression from childhood to heteronormative adulthood. Hence, by drawing on the compelling framework of queer temporalities, the main goal of this article is to analyze the mechanisms deployed by Ali Smith to generate unprecedented configurations of queer time.

Opis:: Ethnographic collections and museums displaying them are currently facing a crisis of representation which is deeply political. Negotiations mainly take place on a national and institutional level. Yet, in order to deal with conflicts and problems that arise around ethnographic collections in a way that allows for and affirms new relationships being formed outside the realm of representational power, new perspectives and methodological tools from a grassroots level are needed. Intersectional approaches and a renewed attention to relations around ethnographic objects, especially a rethinking of the categories “artwork” versus “ethnographica”, offer a promising route for engaging with heritage as a common ground. As such, they may enable relational politics outside the centres of power. A “queering” of anthropologist Alfred Gell’s art nexus model can be instrumental for the study of queer (non-normative) relations around artworks, including so-called ethnographic objects. The paper proposes an understanding of queerness as a method in the art and museum context, informed by the anthropology of art and kinship, queer studies, and museum studies. This methodology-in-the-making should be part of a toolkit with which researchers and arts practitioners will be able to understand and actively co-create queer relations around objects in ethnographic collections and beyond.

Hidden potential of queer spaces in video games

Opis:: The aim of this article is an attempt to describe queer - understood as a deviation from accepted norms and an interference with universal meanings - space in video games based on three examples: "Batman: Arkham Asylum", "Oxenfree" and "Life is Strange". I will analyze how characters’, gamers’ and authors’ actions carried out in virtual worlds affect primary places and how through this personal or artistic retelling queer spaces are produced. The results of these actions are a disturbance of linear gameplay as well as exposure of game’s mechanics.
Celem artykułu jest podjęcie próby scharakteryzowania queerowej - rozumianej jako odbiegającej od przyjętych norm i zaburzającej uniwersalne znaczenia - przestrzeni pojawiającej się w grach cyfrowych na przykładzie trzech wybranych tytułów: "Batman: Arkham Asylum", "Oxenfree" i "Life is Strange". Analizie został poddany sposób wytwarzania queerowej przestrzeni mający na celu przetworzenie prymarnych form przestrzennych, uzależniony od działań wykonywanych przez bohaterów, gracza czy twórców w obrębie cyfrowego świata. Rezultatem tych działań są zaburzenia linearności rozgrywki, a także obnażanie mechanizmów umożliwiających poprawne funkcjonowanie gier.
