Opis:: In this study a multiaxial isokinetic dynamometer was used to measure strength during various upper-body isokinetic exertions. Ten male participants performed 7 different upper-body isokinetic exertions. In addition, to evaluate the effect of speed on strength, each participant performed sitting pull exertions at the speed of 0.026, 0.130, and 0.260 m/s. Average isokinetic strength increased from 236.6 ± 39.1 to 291.8 ± 65.8 N with the initial increase in speed from 0.026 to 0.130 m/s. The average isokinetic strength decreased to 276.7 ± 87.2 N with a further increase in speed to 0.260 m/s. The curve between isokinetic strength and speed followed a bell-shaped curve (fitted with the Gaussian function, R2 = .9). The results of this study could be useful in deciding on the work pace of various manual material handling tasks requiring maximal and/or near maximal exertions.

Tytuł:: Lost in the quest for novelty : remarks on the role of openness of the culture to repetitions

Opis:: Repetitions can be analysed from various perspectives: historical, moral, legal, commercial etc. Their evaluation varies depending on the point of view one chooses to adopt. For instance, plain repetition (copying) can be considered a theft from the moral perspective, while in the same time it can be considered beneficial from the perspective of culture propagation. From the perspective of memetics, such repetitions are necessary for the memes to survive and the tendency to repeat those “memes” constitutes their fitness to cultural environment. To be closer to biological analogy one should recognize those repetitions as replications. From such perspective the program of reducing replications through the means of “prohibition” becomes not only absurd and unreachable but also it would significantly slow or even push the process of evolution backwards. One should notice that any restrictions on copying were absent in various historical periods. For instance, one of the most important ideals of culture in middle ages was exact copying and preserving the works of the Antique, obviously without any permission of the authors or their successors. It is not until the time when the artistic value becomes reduced to its commercial value that the problem of an intellectual theft arises. No artist works in an intellectual vacuum, thus no one has the full rights to the composition. There are two main reasons for such introducing the concept of an intellectual value. The first is the liberalization of the society leading to its decay into individuals aiming at their own interests. The other is the rapid growth of the “new media” technology, which allows for mindless copying – disregarding any justification or understanding. The latter is not a big problem due to the error elimination in the process of evolution. The former, however, as leading to the disintegration of society is really dangerous. In the nature it would result in the species extinction. In the culture some similarities can also be seen and will be analysed in the present paper.

Opis:: An effective sequential algorithm and two parallel algorithms for generating combinations without repetitions of m out n of objects, represented by Boolean vectors, are proposed. One of them allows one to calculate starting and ending combinations for the subset, generated by each computing processor. The second algorithm firstly generates short (m-component) vectors on several computing processors. After that, by using special [n/m]-component vectors, it connects the short vectors into n-component Boolean vectors, each of which containing of exactly m units.

Opis:: Durassian work, in which the opposition of the ephemeral and the eternal is inscribed, deviates from traditional processes and presents different textual representations of time and its distortions. Her two novels, Moderato cantabile and The Rapture of V. Lol Stein, analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective (phenomenology, psychoanalysis, philosophy), convey the Durassian vision of time, omnipresent and elusive, expressing a rupture. The latter is manifested in the disorder of the metanarrative, the thwarted rhythm, the repetitions and the transgressive movements of a fantastic time and the fusion of space and time. The author’s originality thus lies in the close relationship between subjectivity and temporality, in order to restore an inner time to the female characters, who, in their search for an impossible love, remain stuck in their pain and their fantasies.

Opis:: In addition to their role in situational coherence, repetitions serve multiple textual functions and can constitute a crucial component of style within a literary work. In the prose of Wiesław Myśliwski, repetitions help create, along with other stylistic devices, an effect of orality. Therefore, this study proposes a comparative analysis of repetitions and their function in Myśliwski's novel, Traktat o łuskaniu fasoli, and its two translations into Spanish and French, respectively, El arte de desgranar alubias and L’art d’écosser les haricots. Through the examples provided, the techniques employed by the translators are illustrated, along with the consequences of their decisions for conveying the oral nuance of the text. This, in turn, enables the identification of the main differences between the two translations and serves as a basis for attempting to explain these discrepancies. In the French text, there is a clear tendency to avoid repetitions, whereas the Spanish version of the novel reveals considerable fidelity in translating these. The reasons for this difference lie outside the French or Spanish linguistic systems and any potential limitations they may impose. The discrepancies in the translation of repetitions arise more from differing literary traditions.

Opis:: In literature, and fi rst of all in the poetry of the Young Poland, the motifs of the refl ection in the water or the mirror, shadows, multiplications and repetitions have a key signifi cance. In the poetry of the two equally aged poets, but dissimilar from each other - Leopold Staff and Bolesław Leśmian, these images become an occasion to refl ect upon the truth and falsity, identity and non-identity, finally creation and art. In the "reflection" poems Leśmian and Staff deal with the problem of subjectivity signifi cant for the whole modernism, as it is done in the French poetry by Valery and Mallarmé, in English - Yeats, and German - George and later Rilke. The Narcissus of the Young Poland or not rarely she-Narcissus, similarly to the one from the famous André Gide’s Treatise of the Narcissus, busy contemplating his own reflection he freezes in timeless eternal "now" and - contrary to the myth - loses the awareness of the border between "I" and "non-I". However, the most important moment is, when, in the works from 1910-1914, the modernist Narcissus does not recognize himself in the reflection, or, when he cannot see his reflection. "Refl ections have disappeared..." - we read in the poem "The prisoner of mirrors" written by Staff, which is of great importance to scholars today. And in Prologue by Leśmian a mirror experiment leads to the creation of a manless reflection tunnel, which one can enter only after death. Tracing of the changes, to which the motif was subject in the years 1890-1918, allows understanding of many issues of anthropology and aesthetics of the 20th century.

Opis:: This paper concerns the role of repetitions in Paul Ricoeur’s text entitled Universal Civilization and National Cultures (1961). The analysis aims to prove that the repetitions are a characteristic element of the philosopher’s style. In the analysis the author focuses on the repetitions in the connected and disconnected word order and on repetitions as figures of speech. Ricoeur repeats in his text words, expressions and grammatical constructions. A distinctive element of Ricoeur’s style is also the text structure, e.g., the text division into three parts, the so-called triad system.
