The situation is similar in relation to the food factor. The majority of studies on the effect of kind and concentration of food on the development, growth and production of zooplankton are laboratory observations, in which monocultures of algae and bacteria are used as food. This is an easily accessible food on account of the food particles and is fairly homogenous in respect of energy value, but rarely dominates under natural conditions. In a natural habitat the plankton consumer has many kinds of food available (bacteria, nannoplankton, detritus, soluble organic matter), very heterogeneous in respect of nutritive value and accessibility. What is more, the food concentrations used in this kind of experiment are usually many times greater than those encountered in a natural habitat. As a result considerable differences occur in the utilization and assimilation of food between individuals ,cultured in a laboratory and individuals in a natural habitat, which in turn has an important influence on development rate, growth and production of plankton organism. In consequence interpretation of the food-consumer relation under natural conditions, the question of the limiting role of food in a natural habitat, its accessibility, food preferences and the influence of food development and production of zooplankton is still far from constituting a final explanation and further intensive research is required.

The article conitains a discussion of literature dealing with the effect of temperature and concentration and kind of food, on seasonal and habitat variations (both between habitats and within one habitat) of zooplankton (crustaceans and rotifers belonging to plankton filtrators and sedimentators). Such variations relate both to the size and growth rate of individuals, and to length of development, length of life, reproduction rate and fertility. The results of a large number of field observations and laboratory experiments shows beyond doubt that there is a distinct correlation between variations in temperature and concentration and kind of food and differences, both seasonal parameters. Among the main factors determing variation in growth rate, reproduction, fertility and development of zooplankton, attention is drawn chiefly to the temperature factor, and less often to the food factor, a distinct tendency being observed here to carrying out experimental work in a laborartory at a constant temperature and referring the results obtained to natural conditions. As a result the effect exercised by the temperature gradient on development, growth and fertility of zooplankton is not taken into consideration.

It was found that the “customary” system of taking plankton samples (every 14 days) caused, in comparison with sampling every 3-S days - a fundamental distortion of the picture of the dynamics and species composition of littoral and euplankton rotifers. The degree of such distortion depends on the frequency and periodicity of the occurrence of particular species.

Is inshore, 2-cm layer of wet sand an ecotone? An attempt of this study is to answer the question by analysing characteristic patterns of a structure of rotifer communities inhabiting the psammolitoral zone. Psammon was sampled from sandy shore of a mesotrophic Lake Kuc (Masurian Lakeland, Poland), weekly from May to November 1996 and on one occasion in May 1998. Despite of extremely unfavourable conditions of their abiotic habitat, psammon rotifers of Lake Kuc were reaching occasionally extremely high densities. Seasonal dynamics of numbers and structure of psammon rotifer communities reflected variable ,character of their habitat. A course of the changes was similar in less variable higropsammon and extremely variable eupsammon. Patterns formed in psammolittoral -when illustrated with qualitative and quantitative features of psammon rotifer communities - fit definitions of an ecosystem, an ecotone, a part of a land/water ecotone, a microlayer in the ecosystem or a specific boundary zone in the lake ecosystem.

Rotifer communities inhabiting wet sands of lake beaches are dependent in their functioning on permanent input of organic matter from neighbouring sites. The aim of the study is to test the hypothesis that trophic state of lake waters may influence densities and structure of psammon communities of Rotifera. Studies were carried out in hydro-, hygro- and euarenal of 44 beaches in 18 lakes of different trophy in summer 1999 (since 2 till 17 July) and 38 beaches in 16 lakes in spring 2000 (since 10 till 23 May). Psammon was sampled always between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at similar weather conditions (no shadow, rains and strong winds). Interstitial waters were mostly alkaline and contained less oxygen than lake ones and oxygen concentrations decreased upward water line. Very high variability of phosphate P content made differences between trophic groups of lakes not significant. Similarly, concentrations of P total were more or less similar in all studied trophic groups of lakes. Total nitrogen values were increasing from meso-eutrophic to hypertrophic lakes in spring, whereas this trend was not observed in summer. Chlorophyll a concentrations were similar in meso-, meso-eu and eutrophic and markedly higher in hypertrophic lakes. In general, some tendency to increasing values of chemical parameters with increasing trophy may be seen if their ranking list is compared. Rotifers were present in all studied stations. In total, 110 species (i.e. ca. 26% of all records of rotifer species in Poland) were found with 22 species occurring exclusively in psammon. Three species new in rotifer fauna of Poland were discovered - Cephalodella psammophila, Collotheca wiszniewski and Euchlanis dapidula. Generally all trophic groups of lakes were relatively similar as regards species structure of rotifer communities with rotifers of the genus Lecane playing most important role . The index of Percentage Similarity of Community calculated for randomly chosen 30 pairs of particular beaches from the same lake and for beaches of different lakes was in both cases almost identical. Species of high frequency constituted the overwhelming majority of individuals forming rotifer communities of all beaches. Taxons met in 1 to 5 lakes decided on faunistic originality of the communities. Some tendency was observed for higher diversity of psammon rotifer communities in mesatrophic and eutrophic lakes. The lowest values of diversity index occurred mostly in hypertrophic lakes. Psammobionts constituted only 20% and psammoxens 10% of the community abundance in all lakes and all zones of the beaches, whereas psammophilic rotifers decidedly dominated (70%). Rotifer abundance was relatively similar in eu- and hypertrophic lakes and markedly higher in mesotrophic and lower in meso-eutrophic lakes. However. due to high fluctuations of the values noted in particular beaches the differences were not significant in any of the possible configurations of compared data. Monogononta played much more important role in rotifer densities than bdelloids. The hypothesis on advantageous influence of high trophy of lake waters on abundance of psammon communities of Rotifera cannot be supported by results of this work. In lakes of moderate trophy (from meso- to eutrophy) the amount of nutrients and chlorophyll does not seem to influence psammon communities. In hypertrophic lakes this impact is observed, but it seems to be rather unfavourable for psammon rotifers. The communities in hypertrophic lakes are poorer in species, less diversified and less original. The group of animals developing well in this group of lakes are bdelloids. Species composition nad community structure of psammon rotifers seem to be rather determined by many different factors, lake trophy being only one of them and probably not the main one.

As a result of observations, lasting one and a half years, on the quantitative dynamics of a spontaneously developing population of Philodina citrina in thirteen aquaria containing higher green vegetation and algae, the variable occurrence of this rotifer was established. In the majority of the aquaria (9) Ph. citrina is a scarce species (i. e. often occurs in single specimens) or sporadic species (i. e. occurs rarely and then only single specimens). Ph. citrina occurs in the four remaining aquaria also, usually in small numbers, with the exception of certain periods, varying in duration, of intensive development of the population of this species. During the periods of intensive development of Ph. citrina, the algae present in the aquarium form the basis on which the eggs are laid and individuals of varying size were grouped. The numerical level of occurrence, however, of this rotifer in aquaria, and also its quantitative dynamics, are not strictly bound up with the development dynamics of algae.Three classes of size were established (small -up to 150 μ, medium -150300 μ, large -over 300 μ). It was found that during the period of occurrence in small numbers (the most frequent periods in the materiał examined) -about 20 individuals per litr -and also certain periods of greater numbers, the population of Ph. citrina consists solely of large individuals. In periods when numbers are several times greater than this (up to 900 individuals per litr) differences in the size of individuals occur as the result of intensive reproduction. In phases of increase in population numbers, small and medium individuals predominate, and in the peak phase and in phases of decrease in numbers, large individuals predominate. The above cycles of population development took place most clearly in two of the series of 13 aquaria in which Ph. citrina occurred in the greatest numbers. In the remaining aquaria in which Ph citrina occurred chiefly in small numbers with small and short-lived increases in numbers -large individuals always predominated.
