- Opis:
- Yoga was a widespread and important part of the 19th century European esoteric landscape. Within its framework it underwent many interpretations, often very distant from its traditional Indian understanding, and yet, paradoxically, it was usually presented as a return to the roots and restoration of its proper comprehension. One of the most significant, though relatively little-known interpretation of yoga, is the one proposed by Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). It forms a part of Steiner’s extensive project - a modern spiritual discipline, appropriate for the needs and conditions of modern man, for the level of human evolution specifying man’s psycho-physical and spiritual nature. The aim of this article is to present Steiner’s view on yoga as "the spiritual discipline of yesterday" against the background of his views on human evolution and contrasting it with anthroposophy, a modern path of spiritual development. It is worth remembering that Steiner’s ideas on yoga were of crucial importance for the creation of one of the first interpretations of yoga in Poland authored by occultist and parapsychologist Józef Świtkowski (1876-1942). It was Świtkowski who introduced several ideas derived from Steiner’s thought into Polish yoga discourse.
