Opis:
Mat foundations are most typically used in locations featuring weak soils such as soft clays and silts, particularly when building in demanding geotechnical conditions. Because of their poor engineering characteristics and significant difficulties associated with workability, these soils are often removed or avoided by excavating down to a specific depth. However, if thick layers are present, their removal becomes unpractical, costly, and creates inconvenience during construction. To overcome this issue, various reinforcement strategies can be adopted. In this study, the use of stone columns under mat foundations was investigated via numerical modeling. Two scenarios were compared: one in which stone columns were installed without any soil removal and another in which a layer of soft ground was removed and the foundation was installed without any ground treatment. Numerical results showed the clear beneficial effect of stone columns, which can significantly reduce settlements even in the presence of a thick deformable soil layer.

Opis:
physical processes in soil-plant-water system are very complicated. Complex physical processes in soil, in particular interaction between soilplant-water system have signicfiant inuflence on processes in planetary Boundary layer. Changes of soil state can signicfiantly modify processes in the pBl and meteorological efilds . Since numerical models are to determine the forecast of high quality, the physical processes occurring in soil should be properly described and then appropriately introduced into a model. every process in soil occurs on a smaller scale than original model's domain, so it should be described via adequate parameterization. Overall, soil parameterizations implemented in current numerical weather prediction (NWp) model(s) were prepared almost 40 years ago, when NWp models worked with very poor resolution mesh. Since nowadays NWp works over domains of high resolution, these “old” schemes parameterization must be adequately revised. In this paper preliminary results of changes of parameterization of soil processes will be presented.

Opis:
The most challenging issue when analyzing geotechnical structures by means of finite element method is the choice of appropriate constitutive soil model, especially with reference to serviceability limit states. The paper presents parametric study of a deep excavation in clays aiming to qualify the applicability of different soil constitutive models in such specific soil conditions. Three types of constitutive models are considered in the paper: linear elastic – perfectly plastic model (Mohr-Coulomb) as a simple and well recognized reference, hypoplastic model (Hypoplastic Clay) and nonlinear elasto-plastic cap models (Hardening Soil and Hardening Soil Small). Numerical analysis was performed using two finite element codes – Plaxis and GEO5 FEM both in 2D space and the results were compared to in-situ displacements measurements. The discussion on the suitability of chosen constitutive models for advanced modelling of deep excavation in preconsolidated clays is presented.

Opis:
The paper investigates a description of energy dissipation within saturated soils-diffusion of pore-water. Soils are assumed to be two-phase poro-elastic materials, the grain skeleton of which exhibits no irreversible behavior or structural hysteretic damping. Description of motion and deformation of soil is introduced as a system of equations consisting of governing dynamic consolidation equations based on Biot theory. Selected constitutive and kinematic relations for small strains and rotation are used. This paper derives a closed form of analytical solution that characterizes the energy dissipation during steady-state vibrations of nearly and fully saturated poro-elastic columns. Moreover, the paper examines the influence of various physical factors on the fundamental period, maximum amplitude and the fraction of critical damping of the Biot column. Also the so-called dynamic coefficient which shows amplification or attenuation of dynamic response is considered.

Opis:
A hybrid ANN-FE solution is presented as a result of two level analysis of soils: a level of a laboratory sample and a level of engineering geotechnical problem. Engineering properties of soils (sands) are represented directly in the form of ANN (this is in contrast with our former paper where ANN approximated constitutive relationships). Initially the ANN is trained with Duncan formula (Duncan and Chang [2]), then it is re-trained (calibrated) with some available experimental data, specific for the soil considered. The obtained approximation of the constitutive parameters is used directly in finite element method at the level of a single element at the scale of the laboratory sample to check the correct representation of the laboratory test. Then, the finite element that was successfully tested at the level of laboratory sample is used at the macro level to solve engineering problems involving the soil for which it was calibrated

Opis:
This paper presents an evaluation of the Hypoplastic Clay constitutive model for finite element analysis of deep excavations and displacements induced by excavations in the influence zone. A detailed description and formulation of the Hypoplastic Clay soil model is included. A parametric case study of a deep excavation executed in Pliocene clays is presented. FE analysis was performed using several soil models (Mohr-Coulomb, Modified Mohr-Coulomb, Drucker-Prager, Modified Cam-Clay, Hypoplastic Clay) and the results were compared to in-situ displacements measurements taken during construction. Final conclusions concerning the suitability of the Hypoplastic Clay model for deep excavation modelling in terms of accurate determination of horizontal displacements of the excavation wall, the uplift of the bottom of excavation, and, most importantly, vertical displacements of the terrain in the vicinity of the excavation are presented.

Opis:
This article describes cyclic changes in the soil water storage that take place within developmental stages of the stands managed by clear−cutting system. The aim of the paper is to present possibilities of studying these changes and their significance for the dynamics of waterlogging of forest ecosystems and water outflow from the forest. Soil water storage (SWS) in forest soils undergoes cyclic changes that can be divided into short−term, seasonal and long−term. Short−term changes, calculated on a daily basis, and seasonal, covering the entire growing season, can be identified and analyzed based on stock values measured over relatively short periods. Studying long−term cycles in this way is practically impossible, as there are no long−term measuring sequences. However, it is possible to use water−balance equilibrium in atmosphere−stand−soil (A−D−G) for this purpose. The dependent variables include increments of soil water storage, while independent ones are represented by the biometric features of stands and hydro−climatic factors. The balance equations should be built separately for SWS supply and losses. In the recharge phase the increase of the SWS after single rainfall, the amount of potential interception proportional to the plant surface and the weight of the forest litter as well as rainfall intensity and duration, which determine the level of its use are taken into account. SWS losses are explained by the rates of plant transpiration, linearly dependent on the amount of biomass produced and evaporation from the soil surface, which is a function of the amount of solar energy and wind velocity within the stand. They are modulated in relation to the conditions above the canopy that in turn depend on biometric characteristics of the stand. Taking into account the hydro−climatic conditions above the canopy ensures that the ceteris paribus condition is met. Recognition of long−term SWS cycles is possible due to the knowledge of stand dynamics manifested by changes in the value of its biometric features. The identification of equations according to the above−mentioned indications was carried out many times with very high compliance in the conditions of even−aged low−energy stands. The occurrence of long−term SWS cycles raises a number of questions regarding the forest ecosystem functioning, description of forest sites, silvicultural systems applied as well as the ability to control the water balance in forest ecosystems. The hydrological conditions in the forest ecosystem are shaped mostly upon selecting silvicultural system to be implemented. It results in specific changes in biometric features in the subsequent stand development stages modulating the components of the A−D−G balance and, as a consequence, soil water relations. The impact of ongoing stand tending is limited. However, forest drainage, tree felling uncovering soil surface and sudden changes in the forest structure triggered by abiotic and biotic factors, may produce significant effects.

Opis:
In order to analyze the influential factors of soft foundation settlement in a marine reclamation land project, the consolidation settlement and pore pressure dissipation of the entire area are numerically simulated using Soft-SoilCreep Model, in which the PLAXIS finite element software for professional geotechnical engineering is applied and empirical data of Japanese Kansai’s airport project are used. Moreover, the figures of settlement and pore pressure results in the different basic period are drawn, and the corresponding analysis conclusions are obtained based on the comparison among the results from the computational parameters of depth. In addition,, the influence rules of various parameters on settlement results is concluded through running the parameter sensitivity analysis in Soft-Soil-Creep Model, and the experience and conclusions can be for reference in the design and con-struction of similar large-scale marine reclamation land project. Also the empirical value method of the creep index has not been applied widely. Further research needs to be done.

Opis:
The goal of this study is to assess the application of the Hardening soil model in predicting the deformation of retaining walls of excavations in 2D and 3D finite element analysis at the Ho Chi Minh Metro project. Designed as the deepest underground station in the first metro line built in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Opera House station is located in an area with a dense building zone and close to historical buildings. A summary of the input soil properties is provided using data from site investigations, in-situ tests, and laboratory tests. By numerical simulation using the Hardening soil model, the parameters of the soil stiffness modulus value are verified based on the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), and Pressuremeter test (PMT). The obtained results of the numerical analysis by 2D and 3D finite element methods, and field observations indicate that applying the Hardening soil model with soil stiffness modulus obtained in situ tests gives reasonable results on the displacement of the retaining wall at the final phase. The relationship between the SPT value and the stiffness modulus of HCMC sand is a function of depth. This correlation is obtained through the comparison of wall deformation between the simulation and monitoring at the construction site. The results of the difference between 2D and 3D finite element analysis also are discussed in this study.
