Opis:
Background: Pet therapy could help individuals improve their emotions; and physical and mental health. It also could be effective in the treatment of pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of pet therapy, concurrent with common medication on positive, negative, cognitive and motor symptoms of schizophrenia. Methods: This was a randomized control trial. Statistical population of the current study included all patients who were admitted to the Razi Psychiatric Center of Tehran and received a diagnosis of schizophrenia based on a clinical interview and DSM criteria by a psychiatrist. Thirty six patients were recruited using snowball sampling. Members of the experimental group were transported by a bus to that spot at 9 a.m on the planned days, in the company of the researcher and a nurse. Patients gave care of the rabbits (including feeding, tidying their cages, moving their cages) for 24 sessions of 90 minutes, three days per week during autumn 2016. The One-way covariance test was also used to evaluate effects of Pet therapy on positive, negative, cognitive and motor symptoms of schizophrenia. Results: finding indicated that considering scores of pre-test for positive, negative and cognitive symptoms, there is a significant difference between the two controls and experimental groups, respectively, (F = 17.04, p < 0.05), (F = 17.39, p < 0.05), (F = 152.12, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Pet therapy could be successfully applied by parents, psychologists and care givers of these patients. We suggest using pet therapy for treatment of other psychiatric disorders as well and preferably like dogs and cats.

Opis:
Introduction. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that requires long-term treatment. Lack of support from the environment and stigmatisation intensify the consequences of the disease. Aim. The purpose of this master’s dissertation is the analysis of how professionally active nurses and nursing students of bachelor degree perceive patients suffering for schizophrenia. Material and methods. For this master’s dissertation a diagnistic survey and a questionnaire were used. The interviewees had to give answers to questions. The questionnaire contained twenty-three questions. Conclusions. In nursing profession work experience does not have significant influence on the change of perception of patients suffering from schizophrenia. However, the level of education affects the perception of patients suffering from schizophrenia. The frequency of interaction with schizophrenia patients has got significant impact on how they are perceived.
Materiał i metody. Dla potrzeb pracy zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego i technikę ankiety. Kwestionariusz zawierał dwadzieścia trzy pytania. Wnioski.

Recognition of facial expressions of emotions in schizophrenia
Autorzy:
Łosiak, Władysław
Siedlecka, Joanna
Opis:
Deficits in recognition of facial expressions of emotions are considered to be an important factor explaining impairments in social functioning and affective reactions of schizophrenic patients. Many studies confirmed such deficits while controversies remained concerning the emotion valence and modality. The aim of the study was to explore the process of recognizing facial expressions of emotion in the group of schizophrenic patients by analyzing the role of emotion valence, modality and gender of the model. Results of the group of 35 patients and 35 matched controls indicate that while schizophrenic patients show general impairment in recognizing facial expressions of both positive and the majority of negative emotions, there are differences in deficits for particular emotions. Expressions also appeared to be more ambiguous for the patients while variables connected with gender were found less significant.

Semantic satiation in schizophrenia : the role of valence of stimuli
Autorzy:
Prochwicz, Katarzyna
Opis:
Aim. The primary aim of the research was to define the relation between semantic satiation effect, overactivation of semantic network and a symptom of derealisation in people suffering from schizophrenia. The semantic satiation was defined as the subjective and temporary experience of loss of meaning of repeatedly pronounced words or images which is the result of excessive activation in the semantic network. Because overactivation in semantic network is common feature of schizophrenia, it was expected that schizophrenic patients would be prone to satiation effect more than healthy subjects. Methods. Satiation of negative, positive and emotionally neutral images was determined for patients suffering from schizophrenia and in healthy controls. The subjects were presented with pictures from different categories flashed on a computer screen 3, 13, 23 and 33 times. Each presentation was followed by the category name and the subjects decided, whether the object presented on the photograph belonged to this category. It was expected that the loss of meaning of satiated images would delay participants’ lexical decision and that this effect should be stronger for the schizophrenic than for the control group. Results. Reaction times to a decision based on repeated images were longer in a group of patients suffering from schizophrenia than in the control group. It was also observed that in the group of patients the satiation effect depends on valence of satiated images. Emotionally positive and negative pictures were satiated faster than neutral ones. Discussion. The conducted experiment confirmed the greater susceptibility of patients to the effect of semantic satiation. It has been revealed that subjective experience of the loss of meaning of images depends on the valence of stimuli.

Czy neuroscience wyjaśnia efekty psychoterapii schizofrenii?
Do neuroscience researches explain the effectiveness of psychotherapy?
Opis:
Neuroscientific researches explaining the effectiveness of psychotherapy went in three directions. The first, basing on a theory of memory explicit (declarative memory, consciousness) and implicit (non-declarative memory, unconsciousness) aims at the reinterpretation of the mechanisms of psychotherapy. This method is useful in analyzing effects of cognitive psychotherapy but also psychoanalytic orientated psychotherapy which is basing on interpretations and insight. The second current in such research is connected with the possibility neuroimaging gives to evaluate changes occurring in the course of therapy. According to this method it is possible to show biological mechanisms of therapeutic alliance or reduction of basic fear. The third and last direction investigates changes in metabolism of neural cells in the brain under the influence o f pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Results of these investigations are particularly interesting showing more specifically changes in the course of psychotherapy rather than pharmacotherapy of depressive disorder. Most of the investigations concern depressive or obsessive - compulsive disorder because of a high homogeneity of these disorders. In schizophrenia, which in contradistinction to them is quite a heterogeneous one, it is difficult to construct a useful scientific design. But the possibility which neuroscience offers to explain the effects of psychotherapy is still nonetheless present.

Can modern psychiatry take a lesson out of the teaching of old Aesklepios? What could he teach us? Do our patients profit out of his lesson? The presented paper focuses on modern psychiatry, with its theories and methods which are still under the influence of another medical tradition, namely those of Hippocrates, On the example of the history of one patient, the paper shows how we can combine these two medical traditions in our practice and how our patients can take benefit from that.

Opis:
Background. Schizophrenia is one of the commonly occurring disorders, often causing a high degree of disability to the patients, as well as being stressful to the caregivers. Objectives. To find the efficacy of psycho-education on knowledge regarding schizophrenia among caregivers and reducing their level of burden. Material and methods. A randomized controlled trial was used to assess the effectiveness of psycho-education among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. This study was conducted at a selected state government mental hospital in Karnataka, India. 350 caregivers were randomly assigned to study (n = 175) and control groups (n = 175). Both the group subjects were initially assessed for knowledge and burden. The study group caregivers participated in one or two psycho-education sessions with routine nursing care. Control group subjects received routine care in the hospital. Post-intervention assessment was done at the end of one-month and three-month intervals. Results. At pre-test, the study group caregivers’ mean knowledge scores were mean = 22.93, SD = 17.03, which was improved to mean = 85.90, SD = 9.51 at the one-month follow-up and mean = 97.94, SD = 4.41 at the three-month follow-up. This improvement was statistically significant at a 0.01 level when compared to control group caregivers. The study group caregivers’ mean burden scores that were initially recorded at pre-test mean = 82.37, SD = 10.40 reduced to mean = 49.13, SD = 8.28 at the one-month follow-up and mean = 40.86, SD = 6.27 at the three-month follow-up. This improvement was statistically significant at a 0.01 level when compared to control group caregivers. Conclusions. The study group caregivers showed an improvement in knowledge gain and a reduction in care burden. The present study findings provided evidence for the role of psycho-education intervention in reducing care burden among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and was also found effective in caring for their relatives with appropriate knowledge

What we are taught by Kępiński today?
Czego dziś uczymy się od Antoniego Kępińskiego?
Autorzy:
Cechnicki, Andrzej
Opis:
The author, basing on Schizophrenia by Antoni Kępiński, attempts to find a key to understand psychosis and seeks suggestions for everyday therapeutic work. He emphasizes the importance of therapeutic relationship and bonding with the patient on the way towards a common world. In this process, the patient is getting closer to us and helps us to know ourselves better. The author describes a therapeutic approach to stimulate the healing process and reiterates the 40-years old practical recommendations of Professor Kępiński, who expected individual treatment of each patient, encouraged to teach patients to manage their own treatment and to treat them as experts in their own experiences. The author believes that psychiatry should return to the humanistic approach in the spirit of Antoni Kępiński and deepen its sensitivity to the fundamental needs of patients and their families.
Autor próbuje znaleźć klucz do zrozumienia psychozy i poszukuje wskazówek dla codziennej pracy terapeutycznej. Podkreśla znaczenie relacji i opisuje podejście terapeutyczne stymulujące proces zdrowienia i odczytuje, zapisane przed czterdziestu laty, praktyczne zalecenia Profesora. Wyraża przekonanie, że w psychiatrii powinien nastąpić powrót do humanistycznego podejścia w duchu Antoniego Kępińskiego i pogłębienie wrażliwości na fundamentalne potrzeby pacjentów i ich rodzin.
