Opis:
Carbon dioxide injection into depleted oil fields is widely used. The injection enhances oil recovery and generates other advantages like: (1) decrease of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and (2) the possibility for CO2 emission trade. Geological and reservoir parameters of Jastrząbka Stara structure are discussed in this paper in the context of possible CO2 sequestration. Reservoir absorptivity and tightness, overburden thickness, storage capacity as well as social and economical aspects are taken into consideration. Based upon these factors, Jastrząbka Stara oil deposits may be classified as potential carbon dioxide storage site.Detailed data cannot be published due to Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG SA) confidentiality requirements.

Successful endovascular treatment of intralobar pulmonary sequestration : an effective alternative to surgery

Opis:
Introduction: Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation characterised by the presence of non-functional and dysplastic pulmonary tissue that lacks communication with the tracheobronchial tree and has an aberrant non-pulmonary blood supply. Depending on its location, presence of the pleura covering, and venous drainage, 2 forms of pulmonary sequestration have been described: intra- and extralobar. Traditionally, surgical resection was performed; however, a growing number of cases have been treated with endovascular intervention. Case report: A 38-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with severe haemoptysis for several hours. Examination at admission revealed tachycardia and tachypnoea. Computed tomography-examination disclosed the presence of an area of consolidation in the left lower lobe with a tortuous feeding artery arising from the descending aorta. Visible ground glass opacification indicated diffuse alveolar haemorrhage. Based on these findings, a diagnosis of intralobar sequestration of the left lung was made. The patient was consulted by a cardiothoracic surgeon and an interventional radiologist and qualified for endovascular treatment. In local anaesthesia femoral access was obtained and selective angiography of the common trunk of both bronchial arteries was performed. It depicted a dilated left bronchial artery supplying the sequestration and visible contrast extravasation. Embolisation of the vessel was performed with Glubran (n-butyl-cyanoacrylate). Control contrast injection showed complete elimination of the sequestration’s blood supply with no residual capillary blush. Clinical improvement was observed. No complications were encountered, and the patient was discharged 7 days after the procedure. Conclusions: Arterial embolisation is a promising alternative to surgery in the treatment of symptomatic pulmonary sequestration.

Opis:
Carbon capture and sequestration from a stationary source comprises four distinct engineering processes: separation of CO2 from the other flue gases, compression, transportation, and injection into the chosen storage site. An analysis of the thermodynamic and transport properties of CO2 shows that dissolving this gas in seawater at depths more than 600 m is, most likely, an optimal long-term storage method; and that for transportation, the CO2 must be in the denser supercritical state at pressures higher than 7.377 MPa. The separation, compression, transportation, and injection processes require significant energy expenditures, which are determined in this paper using realistic equipment efficiencies, for the cases of two currently in operation coal power plants in Texas. The computations show that the total energy requirements for carbon removal and sequestration are substantial, close to one-third of the energy currently generated by the two power plants. The cost analysis shows that two parameters – the unit cost of the pipeline and the discount factor of the corporation – have a very significant effect on the annualized cost of the CCS process. Doubling the unit cost of the pipeline increases the total annualized cost of the entire CCS project by 36% and increasing the discount rate from 5% to 15% increases this annualized cost by 32%.

Opis:
This article presents an analysis of the costs of geological sequestration of carbon dioxide. Special emphasis is put on the most important factors affecting the cost of this process. These are among others: the amount of CO2 emission, the kind of the emitter, the composition of exhaust gases, technology of separation, a distance between the source of emissions and the place of injection, the mode of transport and the cost of injection. For each of these factors and their combination a range of potential costs was presented. They were also ranked according to their impact on the economic efficiency of the entire process of geological sequestration of carbon dioxide.

Opis:
Background: This case report describes two cases of extralobar pulmonary sequestration in adults with and without torsion/necrosis. Case Report: Non-complicated extralobar pulmonary sequestration was found incidentally in a 50-year-old asymptomatic woman (Case 1), diagnosed with the presence of a branching structure in a mass lesion and blood supply from the right inferior phrenic artery. Another case of a 38-year-old woman presented with a sudden onset of back pain caused by extralobar pulmonary sequestration with torsion/necrosis (Case 2). A 4-cm fusiform mass in the paravertebral region showed enhancement in the peripheral rim only, and no feeding artery. These were the same as it had been reported typical findings in extralobar pulmonary sequestration with necrosis. On magnetic resonance imaging, the masses in both cases showed inhomogeneous low signal and branching high signal on T2-weighted images. That was characteristic for a stroma without dilated alveoli as a solid part and dilated alveoli as fluid regions. Conclusions: By comparing those two cases, we came to a conclusion that only T2-weighted imaging reflects the native structure, even after infarction. Although differentiation from a cystic tumor with hemorrhage or infection can be problematic, inhomogeneous low signal and branching high signal on T2-weighted images may help us distinguish extralobar pulmonary sequestration from other cystic lesions.

Opis:
The sequestration of carbon in biomass of herb and moss layers of forest ecosystems is relatively less studied, than analogical processes in trees biomass and soil organic mass. The paper presents mean values of carbon concentration and mean amounts of dry mass of plant material in the herb and moss layer of phytocoenoses formed under canopy of stands of main forest-forming species of trees in Poland. The parameters were studied for beech, birch, oak, alder, pine, fir and spruce forest stands, for most of the particular age classes. The studied plots were contained in following plant associations and communities: Ribo nigri-Alnetum, Fraxino-Alnetum, Galio odorati-Fagetum, Luzulo luzuloidis-Fagetum, Molinio caeruleae-Quercetum roboris, Calamagrostio-Quercetum petraeae, Abietetum polonicum, Abieti-Piceetum montanum, Calamagrostio villosae-Piceetum, as well as anthropogenic communities: Betula pendula comm. on Leucobryo-Pinetum habitat, Larix decidua comm. on Tilio-Carpinetum habitat, Pinus sylvestris comm. on Tilio-Carpinetum habitat, Picea abies comm. on Luzulo pilosae-Fagetum habitat (in lowland) and Picea abies comm. on Luzulo luzuloidis-Fagetum habitat (in lower mountain localities). The relatively highest carbon amount was observed in oak forests, pine forests and in older age classes of lowland beech forest, where the carbon concentration in dry mass reaches from 60 to 81%. The lowest concentrations were determined for lowland spruce forests, highland fir forests and for alder forests. The carbon concentration reached in these types of ecosystems from 39 to 41%.

Opis:
Dwutlenek węgla dostarczany do hodowli mikroalg znacznie zwiększa przyrost biomasy, produktywność i wydajność takiego systemu, zabezpieczając atmosferę przed nadmierną emisją CO2 . Badania dotyczyły oceny efektywności usuwania CO2 przy udziale dwóch gatunków mikroalg: Chlorella vulgaris oraz Nannochloropsis gaditana należących do różnych grup systematycznych. Badania prowadzono w reaktorach zamkniętych przy różnych stężeniach dwutlenku węgla w hodowli. Maksymalną efektywność procesu uzyskano w hodowli Nannochloropsis gaditana w obecności 8% CO2.
Carbon dioxide supplied to the microalgae culture significantly increased the biomass growth, productivity and efficiency of such system, protecting atmosphere from excessive CO2 emissions. The study focused on assessing the CO2 removal effectiveness with the participation of two species of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis gaditana belonging to different taxonomic groups. The study was carried out in closed reactors at different carbon dioxide concentrations. The maximum process efficiency was achieved for Nannochloropsis gaditana culture at 8% of CO2.
