Opis:
In many birds, especially in monomorphic species and breeds, it is difficult to distinguish between sexes due to lack of phenotypic differences. Originally, sex identification was based on behavioural observations, structure of the pelvis and certain anatomical features. Direct methods, such as endoscopy, laparoscopy and laparotomy, have been widely criticized for being highly invasive, stressful and difficult, especially when the size of birds is considered. Karyotyping fails in some species (ostrich, emu) due to similarity of their sex chromosomes and can be used only in case of the species with heteromorphic female ZW sex chromosomes. With the advances of molecular diagnostics new methods of sex identification have been developed and these include hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). An effective method of sex identification in pigeons uses CHD1 gene, which is present both in Z and W chromosomes.

Opis:
This article reflects on an in‑depth reading of a publication exploring the question of transsexualism and transsexuals in Poland, as well as the experiences resulting from the medical care of such individuals. The first part of the text is a supplement with essential information from the medical field, which to a large degree is uncovered in the book under review. The second part presents critical comments relating to the book’s contents both in terms of the information it contains (on a theoretical level) and equally in terms of its research (on an empirical level). In the conclusion, both the overall positive aspects of the publication as well as its weaker points are summed up in general terms.

The work is a part of the project “The concept of norm in sexology - analysis of origins of diagnostic criteria and their social and ethical consequences”, financially supported by National Science Centre, Poland 2016/21/D/HS1/03401
Introduction & objectives: Presented results are the part of a broader study on the mainstream and marginalized sexological approaches in the Polish practice of diagnosing and treating sexual problems. In the presentation we will focus on the therapists’ attitudes towards the instrumental use of the body. Method(s) & Sample: 46 in-depth interviews with Polish sex therapists representing various therapeutic approaches were carried out to elucidate the influence of diverse concepts of healthy sexuality on the sexological practice. Findings & discussion: We have observed a great variety of norms regarding sexual health. The topic of instrumental use of one’s own or partner’s body emerged as one of the most controversial and important for defining a sexual norm. Within this topic we identified three threads: body use for mercantile purposes (sexual surrogates and workers), for purposes resulting from internalized social expectations as to the role of the spouse, and for satisfying the needs of one partner only (e.g. instrumental use of other’s body for one’s own pleasure). Limits in the acceptance of these various forms of body use were strongly conditioned by therapist’s leading moral values, adopted psychological theories or medical norms, and personal attachment to cultural prescripts regarding sexual activity in marriage. Recommendations: The goal of sexological treatment is regarded by various therapists as unambiguous: the client’s well-being. Despite this ostensible consensus, our research shows that the client’s well-being may be interpreted in very different ways. The phenomena perceived by some sexologists as pathological and requiring treatments, by the others are treated as normative and even worthy of affirmation. The chosen topic of instrumental body use spotlights these essential differences and reveals that there is no common set of sexual norms on which all sex therapists would agree.

This thesis describes the taboo phenomenon, showing its brief historical context, as well as presenting the sociological manifestation of taboo. The aim of the work is to present a linguistic overview considering basic concepts related to taboo language, its pragmatic context, and a study conducted in Spain about taboo realization in the society. Based on the Netflix series “Sex Education”, the work also provides a linguistic analysis of the taboo of sex and sexuality, considering aspects of heteronormative sex practices, homosexuality, body parts, or unconventional sex activities.
Praca opisuje zjawisko tabu, ukazując kontekst historyczny oraz jego socjologiczne manifestacje. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie lingwistycznego zarysu z uwzględnieniem podstawowych pojęć związanych z językiem tabu, jego pragmatycznego kontekstu, oraz badań przeprowadzonych w Hiszpanii na temat funkcjonowania tabu w społeczeństwie. Praca zawiera także analizę językową opartą na serialu Netflix „Sex Education” dotyczącą tabu seksu i seksualności, z uwzględnieniem aspektów hetero-normatywnych praktyk seksualnych, homoseksualizmu, części ciała, a także niekonwencjonalnych praktyk seksualnych.

The differences in cognitive processes driven by biological sex are the issues that have gotten growing attention recently. Considering the increasing population suffering from various cognitive impairments and the development of therapeutic strategies, it is essential that we recognize the mechanisms responsible for discrepancies observed in male and female learning and memory functions. In this review, we discuss recent reports from preclinical studies on rodents regarding selected cognitive domains to explore the state of knowledge on sex-dependent differences and point to challenges encountered during such research. We focus on spatial, recognition, and emotional memory, as well as on executive functions, such as attention, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. This review will help to acknowledge sex-related differences in cognition and indicate some fields that lack sufficient data.

The presented results are a part of a broader study on the mainstream and marginalized approaches in Polish sexology. 48 in-depth interviews with sex therapists representing various therapeutic approaches were carried out to elucidate diverse concepts of healthy sexuality and their impact on treatment goals in sex therapy. Although sex therapists unanimously indicate the well-being of the client as the crucial criterion of good sexual functioning, this study shows that the client’s well-being may be interpreted in various ways, translating into radically distinct objectives in therapy. One of the topics that differentiate sexologists the most involves the attitudes toward various roles that sex can play in human life. Although a few functions of sex are widely perceived as desired (e.g. its bond-building role), numerous others (e.g. sex for money, casual sex for pleasure) may be seen as an indicator of a psychopathology. The range of possible functions of sex that are recognized as proper, good or healthy depends strictly on the preferred psychotherapeutic approach and moral worldview of the therapists. Therefore, depending on the therapeutic school, the same sexual phenomena that are perceived by some sexologists as pathological and requiring treatment, are accepted or even affirmed by others. The presentation sheds light on the theoretical and normative assumptions that accompany the most frequently recalled roles that sex can play, and reveals that there is no common set of sexual norms on which all sex therapists would agree.

Opis:
The paper deals with sex crimes against minors, focusing on the offenders and their social stigmatization. We discuss their characteristics, examining selected interpretations and classifications of the phenomenon of pedophilia. It is presented here from two perspectives, psychological and legal. First, pedophilia is presented as a complex psychiatric disorder which can cause “behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child” (DSM-V). Second, legal regulations concerning sexually-based crimes against minors are discussed as they are formulated in the Polish Criminal Code. Presenting the psychological and legal characteristics of this type of sex crime, we try to find the reasons for frequent recidivism among the offenders (stigmatization is believed to be one of them).

Opis:
Research paper addresses an issue of sex trafficking in the Kingdom of Thailand and analyzes it through external and internal perspectives. Firstly, legal framework of The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in regards to human rights violations and its activities to eliminate the problem in the region are examined. Secondly, historical reasons of sex industry in Thailand, state of affairs and its con-sequences for the society are discussed and local government’s activities are criti-cized. Lastly, sex tourism as a main cause of the problem is identified.
