Opis:
Soil is essential for food production, and there is need practice sustainable soil management. This study was aimed to evaluate physical and chemical properties of soils and their management in three farming communities; Sangasumi (SGS), Gangkoen (GGK) and Gangbuen (GGB) of Southern Adamawa State, Nigeria. The intent is to encourage optimum land use planning and increase the efficiency in the use of soil resources. In the work, a digital Terrain Model (DTM) was generated from the map of the study area, and three elevation ranges were identified; 660-780m - representing the upper-slope in SGS, 540-660m - representing the middle-slope in GGK and 420-540m - representing the lower-slope in GGB, respectively. Three slope positions were delineated using the Geographic Information System (GIS) and their coordinates were obtained by means of a Handheld Geographic Positioning System (GPS). Three profile pits were dug on each of the locations and soil samples were collected in each of the identified horizon of the pits. Standard laboratory procedures were then used to determine soil physical and chemical properties. Herein, results for particle size analysis indicated that the soils were predominantly sand, ranging between 51% to 91% across the pedons and %sand was positively correlated with bulk density. Moreover, soil pH in each sample was slightly acidic to neutral (6.1-6.5 to 6.6-7.3), while organic carbon and total nitrogen levels were low (<1%, <0.15%) and available phosphorus levels were medium (10-20ppm). In contrast, magnesium was high (>1), sodium recorded up to 0.60cmol/kg, potassium was also high (>0.3) and %base saturation were generally medium to high (50-80 to >80). Results suggest the soils have potentials for arable farming. However, soil erosion hazards had affected parts of the fields; this lead to reduction in soil fertility and crop yields. Addition of organic and inorganic fertilizers and control of soil erosion will greatly improve soil fertility losses and increase crop yields.

Opis:
Reliable estimations of soil physical quality provide valuable information for the evaluation and advancement of agricultural soil management strategies. In the agriculturally highly productive Pannonian basin in Eastern Austria, little emphasis has been placed on the determination of soil physical quality and corresponding soil degradation risks. Nevertheless, ongoing climate change, especially prolonged drought periods and higher rainfall intensity, will raise the need for appropriate soil management strategies. Soil physical quality was therefore assessed in nine soil profiles in a long-term tillage experiment which has been in operation since 1988 in Eastern Austria. Soil samples from depths of between 2 and 37 cm and under three different tillage systems (conventional, reduced and minimal tillage) were analysed for various indicators of soil physical quality. The resulting classifications of soil physical quality in the different profiles were compared qualitatively and quantitatively together with an estimation concerning the representativeness of the soil physical quality indicators used. The outcomes showed severe soil compaction under all tillage treatments and slight improvements in soil physical quality marginally above the working depth for the different treatments. Additionally, conversion to conservation tillage led to less pronounced improvements in soil physical quality under Pannonian conditions than have been reported in more humid climates.

Opis:
If we want to develop farming on soil effectively and ecologically, we have to know the soil characteristics, the reasons for the potential low fertility and the ways how to eliminate them. Only this approach allows the rational utilization of the soil fund and achievement of the high effectiveness of the costs needed for the stabilization and increase of fertility and land capability. Recently, many scientific teams have focused their attention on the biochar, a lot of recommendations have been published which are dealing with its application into soil. However, the principal attention has been drawn to the impact of biochar on the particular soils and under the particular conditions. Far less information has been presented about the mutual interactions between the further significant agronomical factors in the combination with biochar. In this primary study, we analyze two new experiments established in the southwest part of Slovakia at the 1 Dolná Streda (sandy soil) and 2 Veľké Uľany (loamy soil) Localities. We discussed (1) the impact of the individual factors on the changes of soil characteristics, and (2) the impact of the individual interactions, such as: soil class – fertilization – biochar on the changes of the soil characteristics. The results indicated that the most significant factor, which influences the monitored soil parameters, is the soil class. The fertilization proved to be a factor which has a negative impact on the humus parameters; on the other hand, it improved the soil sorption. Biochar increased the content of the organic substances in soil and also its environmental effect of retention and immobilization of harmful elements and its positive effect on the soil structure was indicated. The highest frequency of the interactions between the monitored parameters related to the changes of soil characteristics was recorded in the combination fertilization x biochar, and also the soil class x fertilization x biochar.

Opis:
Based on a seven step sequential extraction procedure, available and potentially available fractions of zinc in agricultural soils classified to black earths (gleyic chernozems) being under conventional soil management were separated, it was found that zinc is present mostly in non available fractions and the content of labile zinc is scant. The total contents of Zn ranged from 22.7 to 221.0 mg/kg. The exchangeable Zn was low accounting for less than 7% of the total in most soils. Zinc availability is restricted due to fixation of metal to soil components: iron oxides and organic matter. Zinc was also found in significant amounts in residual fraction, which refers to metal tightly bound in crystal lattice of primary minerals. The study shows that in majority of analyzed soils, available zinc is below the deficit limit. It is necessary to recognize the scale of the problem due to possible application of Zn fertilizer.

Opis:
The main objective of the studies was to determine the effect of reduced tillage and direct sowing management systems on the changes of analyzed parameters of soil biological activity, in comparison to the changes in soil under conventional management system. At private farm Rogow, soil under direct sowing showed on average about 13,0 % higher contents of microbial biomass C, and 1,3 times higher activity of dehydrogenases system, than soil managed conventionally. Similar effects of direct sowing management on analyzed parameters of soil biological activity was observed at the Experimental Station Zelislawki. The calculated values of microbial quotient (C biomass : org. C ratio) for soils under direct sowing management were higher than values obtained for soil managed conventionally at both experimental sites, in 2003 and 2005. Significant increase in microbial quotient was noticed in 2005 as compared to 2003 at both experimental sites.

Opis:
The two-year field and laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of soil management, land use climate conditions and soil properties on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in drainage waters and soils. In the field experiment drainage waters were sampled from 12 drainage watersheds (in four research areas characterized by different soil properties each with three research sites - drainage watersheds were chosen each located in area differing in terms of land use and management practices). In the laboratory study pH values (3.5-7.5) typical for Polish soils were simulated in the soils sampled from the four research areas and DOC concentration was determined. It was found that DOC concentration may increase as the result of FYM an NPK fertilizer application, temperature rise and rainfall (during summer), as well as being depended on the soil properties (percentage of particles with a diameter below 0.02 mm, content of phosphorus and pH value). However the influence of individual factors on DOC concentration might be difficult to predict under field conditions due to their overlapping.

Opis:
This study examined the utilization of soil fertility management practices (SFMPs) among arable crop farmers in Osun state, Nigeria. Multistage sampling was used to select 160 arable crop farmers. Data were collected using a well-structured interview schedule and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Person Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The results revealed that the majority of the farmers are married males, mostly aged 51 years old, with an average farm size of 2.6ha, and mainly growing maize (96.9%), cassava (91.9%) and yam (68.1%). The respondents use cultural methods, synthetic fertilizers and organic manure in that order as SFMPs. SFMPs are used at the following levels: cultural methods: ridging across the slope with a weighted mean score (WMS) of 2.81, rotational cropping (WMS = 2.66) and mulching (WMS = 2.47); synthetic fertilizers: NPK (WMS = 1.75) and urea (WMS = 1.27); organic manure: poultry manure (WMS = 0.77) and animal dung (WMS = 0.76). The major source of information for SFMPs was radio (95.6%). PPMC analysis showed that age (r = 0.20*; p = 0.01) and farm size (r = 0.16*; p = 0.04) are significantly related to the utilisation of SFMPs. In conclusion, the respondents were small scale farmers who mostly utilize cultural methods of SFMPs and are mainly influenced by crop type as a function of age and farm size.
