Opis:
This paper proposes an approach to verb-noun constructions that allows them to be understood holistically, which facilitates the acquisition of their distinctive features (for example, the presence or absence of an article) and their effective correlation with certain communicative functions and situations. Therefore, their use will not only be lexically and grammatically appropriate, but the apprentices will be able to make use of them as a whole acquired and associated with a certain communicative situation or function. As a result, their fluency will gain naturalness and will be closer to native.

Opis:
The aim of the current article is to present the history of the Spanish lexeme perro ‘dog’ in Spanish lexicography. We will begin with an overview of the discussion of the etymology of the word itself and information about its earliest attestations. Subsequently, we will trace both the presence and the content of the dictionary entries for this lexeme from the beginnings of Spanish lexicography. The final part of the article considers contemporary lexicography, and thus we will address the rich phraseology associated with the lexeme perro, which may serve as a basis for further language and culture-related research. The article contributes to the field of cultural linguistics, but due to the examined corpus, it also includes observations of a lexicographic nature.

Opis:
Speaking and writing about translation appears to be a fashionable topic not only because of the heated debates it generates, but also because of its origins. However, talking about the translation of poetry becomes almost a quixotic task. What apparently appears to be a simple change of linguistic code entails, in reality, a transposition that brings together the Weltaschauung that underlies the text. We have chosen for our case study one of the best known and studied sonnets by the Italian poet Ugo Foscolo: In morte del fratello Giovanni. In the philological analysis and the translatological results we have laid the foundations for a modern Spanish translation that tries to preserve the form and rhyme of the original text.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to show a record of the state of the Portuguese language at the beginning of the 1919th century, when the changes that led to contemporary Portuguese began to be produced and consolidated, using a representative sample of translations from Spanish to Portuguese linked to the Napoleonic invasions. As these sources are texts in which the Portuguese language meets the Spanish language through translation, we also observe some phenomena or occurrences that result from this.

Opis:
The paper describes the process of validating a reliable annotation scheme for the categories of Stance and Engagement in English and Spanish using a bilingual sample of English-Spanish journalistic texts extracted from the MULTINOT corpus (Lavid et al. 2015). The bilingual sample includes three different newspaper genres: news reports, editorials and letters to the editor. Following the generic annotation pipeline proposed by Hovy and Lavid (2010), the paper describes the different steps to validate an annotation scheme to capture the main features of Stance and Engagement and their realizations in English and Spanish. This includes the instantiation of the theoretical categories, the development of annotation guidelines and the performance of an inter-annotation agreement study on a small training corpus to measure the reliability of the proposed tags. The paper also describes the results of the annotation of a larger corpus using the validated scheme (Moratón 2015). This reveals interesting patterns of variation in the distribution of Stance and Engagement in the three newspaper genres, which can be fruitfully used for contrastive linguistic and computational purposes.

The aim of the paper is to present a thorough description of the terms weakening and lenition in the context of language change, and to present major theories of lenition proposed in the framework of generative phonology. Among the most recent theories of lenition, we mention the proposal by Katz (2016) based on Kingston (2008) in which a distinction is made between loss and continuity lenition. We then present empirical data from the Canary Islands dialect of Spanish in which both types of lenition can be found, making the dialect a model example of weakening language change.

Opis:
This paper is about a metapragmatic-sociolinguistic investigation of linguistic processes of the construction of linguistic-variational features in Salvadoran Spanish – specifically in “El Niño de Hollywood” (2018) by Martínez and Martínez. In this work, the authors attempted to approach socio-cultural realities in rural El Salvador by, among other things, realistically imitating the speakers – and thus became social actors themselves, inscribing certain linguistic features as salient for specific rural varieties of Salvadoran Spanish among readers. This contribution qualitatively analyzes various features on the linguistic levels of phonetics, morphosyntax, and lexis in both works. However, the focus is on the pronominal forms of address usted, tú and vos, which are used in the works as part of the fictional linguistic varieties of the rural protagonists. It is not only between leaders and common gang members that a hierarchical structure is created through communicative acts. Between individual gang members, too, the otherwise predominantly solidary style of communication with vos is set aside and a differential hierarchical positioning is established linguistically through the use of the personal pronouns tú and usted. The metapragmatic processes lead to the inscription of (fictitious) rural language usage and are thus part of the enregisterment of rural varieties in El Salvador as “deviant” and “different” varieties of (urban) Salvadoran Spanish.

Opis:
In addition to their role in situational coherence, repetitions serve multiple textual functions and can constitute a crucial component of style within a literary work. In the prose of Wiesław Myśliwski, repetitions help create, along with other stylistic devices, an effect of orality. Therefore, this study proposes a comparative analysis of  repetitions and their function in Myśliwski's novel, Traktat o łuskaniu fasoli, and its two translations into Spanish and French, respectively, El arte de desgranar alubias and L’art d’écosser les haricots. Through the examples provided, the techniques employed by the translators are illustrated, along with the consequences of their decisions for conveying the oral nuance of the text. This, in turn, enables the identification of the main differences between the two translations and serves as a basis for attempting to explain these discrepancies. In the French text, there is a clear tendency to avoid repetitions, whereas the Spanish version of the novel reveals considerable fidelity in translating these. The reasons for this difference lie outside the French or Spanish linguistic systems and any potential limitations they may impose. The discrepancies in the translation of repetitions arise more from differing literary traditions.

Opis:
This article is intended to explore the linguistic means of anglicization in Cuban Spanish. Thus, a corpus-driven database or glossary of this variant of Spanish has been elaborated to examine these English-induced units quantitatively and qualitatively, entailing a morpho-syntactic and semantic analysis of the anglicization process. This research study is based on two major stages: data collection and data processing of the lemmas compiled. The resulting glossary is used in this part of the study to unravel the morphological and syntactic features of the English-induced units, in particular those of gender and number. A compilation of these Cuban-Spanish units allows for a better understanding of morphological changes and lexical creativity, in keeping with the historical socioeconomic conditions of the island. The collection of colloquialisms, vulgarisms or obsolete words corroborates the diastratic and diaphasic evolution of lemmas, and unveils some distinctive word-building patterns.
