Opis:: The aim of this article is to analyze Wisława Szymborska’s literary works in order to demon-strate that her aphoristic style is one of the most striking elements of her texts. Szymborska’s style is particularly notable in that it is ironically aphoristic, containing parody of typical aphoristic schemata, paradox and tautology. Through this style, her work not only enriches the traditional repertoire of the genre but seems also to justify an important feature of her writing: its philosophical and intellectual character often discerned by critics. As a consequence, quotes from her oeuvre frequently enter diverse anthologies of ‘wise and funny thoughts’ and collections of the so-called ‘winged’ words.

Opis:: This article covers a particular form of Wisława Szymborska conceptism, her Thought fugues, which turns the world’s elements upside down and deconstructs them, uncovering their antinomies. The described reality takes the form of a concatenation, it is elliptic, based on seemingly symmetric tessellations, but in essence triggers some logic turns. It is possible to discern a similarity with advertising rhetoric and its constant variations of sense based on oppositions, such as double meaning, antiphrasis, paradox, or tautology. In all of which Szymborska is able to notice the condensing of meaning, or even some oxymoronic properties. It is perhaps this reason why her poetry is accessible to such a wide audience across the world. Though frequently condemned by 20th-century thinkers as a mere pleonasm, tautology becomes for the poetess a fluid material useful for her dialectics of imagination. Szymborska does not see language as a mirror of the world, but rather as an act of creating new worlds and new forms of life, like Wittgenstein did in his theory of language games. This is why she prefers such word games more than other poets. Due to their dual nature, tautologies constitute a potential and permanent element of Szymborska’s conceptual games.

The methodological problems of researching pleonastic expressions expressions in the contemporary Russian language

Opis:: This article concentrates on the methodological problems of researching pleonastic expressions in the contemporary Russian language. Pleonasm is so complex linguistic phenomenon that it requires a comprehensive methodological approach. None of the methods presented in this article (the analysis of dictionary definitions, contextual analysis, analysis of the distribution, component analysis and prototype theory, elements of the cognitive approach) is sufficient to explore the complexity of the pleonastic expressions. However, new opportunities of researching pleonasm are offered by corpus linguistics. The empirical material based on corpus allows to check such parameters as the frequency of using pleonastic structures, the preferences for the aspect (verbal pleonasm) and the variance.

Tytuł:: The status of redundant expression in a comparative perspective

Opis:: This paper examines the question of semantic and pragmatic aspects of the functioning of pleonastic expressions. The question of pleonasticity understood as redundancy on the part of the sender has not been investigated sufficiently by linguists and is still an actual problem for contemporary linguistics. The basic problem is the difficulty of formulating the definition of the term pleonasm and differentiating it from the notion of tautology. Another important question is the normative valuation of pleonasms. The phenomenon of pleonasticity corresponds with the problem of blurriness of the borders between semantics and pragmatics. A contrastive analysis of pleonastic constructions of the vector type in various Indo-European languages indicates the existence of a general and communicative tendency for semantic redundancy.
В настоящей статье рассматривается вопрос о семантических и прагматических аспектах функционирования плеонастических выражений. Вопрос о плеонастичности, понимаемой как речевая избыточность, недостаточно исследован лингвистами и по-прежнему является актуальной проблемой для современной лингвистики. Основная проблема - трудность сформулировать определение термина плеоназм и разграничить его с понятием тавтология. Другой важный вопрос — нормативная оценка плеоназмов. Феномен плеонастичности соотносится с проблемой размытости границ между семантикой и прагматикой. Сопоставление плеонастических конструкций векторного типа в различных индоевропейских языках указывает на существование общего коммуникативного обоснования указанного феномена.

Opis:: Prefiksy werbalne, obok dwóch podstawowych funkcji: semantycznej i gramatycznej, mogą pełnić także funkcję tautologiczną. Proces tworzenia czasownikowych derywatów synonimicznych był żywy w polszczyźnie historycznej i przetrwał do dziś na gruncie gwarowym. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie procesów powstawania derywatów tożsamych na przykładzie materiału werbalnego pochodzącego z gwar południowomazowieckich, wskazanie ewentualnych przyczyn zjawiska tautologii oraz próba ustalenia, gdzie kończy się tautologia a zaczyna semantyka prefiksu.
Verbal prefixes, apart from two basic functions i.e. semantical and grammatical, may also serve tautological functions. The process of creating verbal synonymous derivatives was alive in historical Polish language and remained alive in dialects. The purpose of this dissertation is to present the processes of creating corresponding derivatives on the example of a verbal material of southern Mazovian dialects, point possible causes of tautology phenomenon, as well as an attempt to determine where tautology ends and where prefix semantics starts.

Opis:: In the present paper we propose an algorithm deciding, whether a given formula a is a tautology of the propositional logic. The worst case complexity of the algorithm is of the order .
W pracy został przedstawiony algorytm sprawdzania czy dana formuła rachunku zdań należąca do języka , zbudowana ze zmiennych, stałej zero, nawiasów oraz znaku implikacji, jest tautologią. Idea algorytmu jest oparta na regułach transformacji. Reguły te zachowują tautologiczność formuły, tzn. formuła , która jest tautologią po zastosowaniu odpowiedniej reguły w dalszym ciągu jest tautologią. Jeśli dana formuła jest różna od stałej lub zmiennej, to w formule znajdujemy ostanie wystąpienie znaku implikacji i stosujemy odpowiednią regułę otrzymując nowy ciąg formuł. Formuły przekształcamy do momentu, kiedy otrzymamy ciąg pusty (wtedy jest ona tautologią), bądź zmienną bądź stałą. Złożoność tego algorytmu, w najgorszym przypadku, wynosi , gdzie oznacza długość formuły.

Opis:: The article subjects to analysis selected motifs from Zbigniew Herbert’s poem “Mr. Cogito and the Imagination” based on the draft copies of the work that are stored in the poet’s archive. An analysis of the manuscripts, which reveals a different, hidden aspect of the final text, allows for the investigation of what was omitted in the process of creation, such as the motif of Daedal and the reference to the Upanishads, and traces the development of the significant themes of the poem: a concept of identity and the notion of tautology.

Opis:: The text is an attempt to consider the character of tautological activities undertaken in conceptual art. There are two ways the issue can be approached. The first refers to the texts of Joseph Kosuth, who wrote that an artwork is a tautology because it refers to the term ‘art’. The author develops the sense of Kosuth’s statement “a work of art is a definition of art” and states, that a part of the tautological system that makes a proposed definiens of ‘art” is available for direct perception, but the other part, which is the term ‘art’ must be recalled intellectually by the recipient. After taking into account the conceptual reference, the sense of a conceptual project with a meta-artistic character becomes noticeable. Polish examples of such works are projects by Roman Opalka, Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Jan Chwalczyk and Wanda Golkowska. The second part of the article considers conceptual projects, in which both parts of equal tautology are directly given. Conceptual works of this structure may either state what is “unquestionable and universally important” (as Alicja Kepińska wrote) or make a kind of sense “at the same time suggested and reversed” (Umberto Eco). The possibilities are considered in reference to tautological works of Zdzislaw Jurkiewicz, Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Zbigniew Dlubak and Jerzy Trelinski.
