Campaigns of Thebes, 379-362 BC
Autorzy:

Wydawca:

Opis:
In the early 370s BC the Thebans freed themselves from Sparta’s domination and challenged its hegemony over Greece. In the course of heavy fighting, they managed to unite Boeotia under their leadership and to break Sparta’s military power at Leuctra in 371. Putting an end to Sparta’s ascendancy, the Thebans briefly tried to take its place, carrying out military interventions on the Peloponnese and in Thessaly in the 360s. These efforts came to a halt after the death of its most outstanding political leader and general, Epaminondas, in the indecisive Battle of Mantinea in 362.

Opis:
This paper presents the most up to date discussion on the architecture of the temple of Millions of Years of Thutmose III, which has been investigated by the Spanish-Egyptian joint project since 2008. The first archaeological works took place at the site at the end of the nineteenth century and during the first decades of the twentieth century. Twelve seasons of the resumed research have brought, e.g. some completely new data concerning buildings related to the temple (i.e. the administrative building outside the southern enclosure wall, workshops north of the upper courtyard, and a house of the Ramesside priest called Khonsu at the northeast of the second courtyard), and allowed for the reconstruction of the course of the enclosure wall of the complex, as well as for some architectural restoration works. This paper also offers an overview through some of the most important finds collected so far during our research (e.g. fragments of reliefs, stelae and statues, inscribed and decorated lintels, foundation deposit, stoppers, ostraca, graffiti, and fragments of papyri) and presents the first results of their analysis: how these materials allow us to better understand the history and administration of the temple as well as what data they provide concerning the priests and the rituals which took place there.

Following the articles published in JJP 47 and 48, further sixty-five ostraca discovered by Tomasz Górecki in the Theban hermitage MMA 1152 are published here. They are labelled ‘Exercises’, a general designation covering different categories, namely extracts of Psalms and other edifying texts, prayers, lists of word, alphabets, and drawings. They are somehow introducing us to the intellectual and spiritual life in the hermitage.

Opis:
The present paper constitutes the second part of the publicaton of Coptic ostraca discovered by Tomasz Górecki in the Theban hermitage MMA 1152. The twenty-eight texts edited here are of legal and economic character, including a few letters of protection and tax receipts, fragments of private contracts, and various economy-related documents (lists, accounts, dipinti). While attesting to a limited administrative activity, these texts, like the letters, reveal their whole value when compared with other documents of the same sort coming from the region.

Opis:
In the third season of the Polish Asasif Project at the North Asasif Necropolis in West Thebes archaeological fieldwork concentrated on six of the Middle Kingdom rock-cut tombs: MMA 508/TT 311, MMA 509, MMA 512, MMA 514, MMA 515 and MMA 517/TT 240. The corridors and chambers were cleared and the architecture documented and restored. A surface survey was carried out on the slope. Of greatest interest among the finds are Middle Kingdom stonemason’s tools and cartonnages from the Third Intermediate Period.

Okręg kultowy w Karnaku.
Karnak Temple Complex
Autorzy:
Wierzba, Justyna
Opis:
This thesis reveals the evolution of the Ipet-Sut temple over about 2000 years. The origins of its existance dates back to the Middle Kingdom, and it was abandoned in the Byzantine era. The Temple is located in Thebes, on the eastern shore of Nile river and it consists of three parts. Each of them was dedicated to a different deity. Blessed precinct was situated in the central part of the whole complex and was dedicated to Amun-Re. On its north side was situated the precinct of god Montu, on south side - precinct of goddess Mut. All of them were sistematically expanded by successive rulers and in effect achieved enormous scale.

Opis:
The article describes the architecture of the tomb of Horhotep, an official at the court of Senwosret I, which is situated at the necropolis of North Asasif in Western Thebes. The structure was built in the row of sepulchral complexes, which belonged to high-ranking officials from the times of the reign of Mentuhotep II. The tomb belongs to the rock tomb type. The layout and shape of the chambers and passages corresponds with the local Theban tradition of the construction of private sepulchral complexes. The exceptional character of the complex can be seen in the layout of the parts carved in the bedrock. As a result of the research into the architecture of the tomb, two phases of its development have been distinguished. The first was associated with the carving of the classic tomb for Horhotep. In the second phase, another cult chapel and the second burial chamber were added, where, as one can only speculate, the son of the official was supposed to be buried.

Opis:
In 2009, Nigel Strudwick published a paper drawing attention to a number of objects found in TT99 which seem to have been used in the Opening of the Mouth ritual. In 2015 an hieratic label from the same burial was identified as possibly belonging to a bag or box in which these items were kept. This paper presents a full edition of the label, and offers further comments on the context where the objects were found, and also indicates lines of research for further study of the Opening of the Mouth ritual.
