Opis:
This paper presents concepts of value chains as strategic models for long-term development and a sustainable approach for ensuring efficiency. It highlights the fact that value chains are of particular importance in the raw materials industry, where the exploration, extraction, processing and metallurgy stages are characterized by high capital expenditure and fixed costs. Additionally, it emphasizes that offering an increasingly valuable product at each stage of production or processing makes it possible to increase earnings and achieve a higher margin. In order to give a practical dimension to the presented analyses, the paper provides an example of lithium value chains and identifies the determinants of their functioning in the current market together with their prospects. The conclusion highlights Europe’s need to source raw materials within business models based on value chains.

Opis:
Research background: The study responses to the internationalisation issue, one of the essential factors of SMEs growth. Particularly to companies' efforts towards setting international cooperation and circumstances obstructing these struggles. The study takes into consideration that internationalisation in specific areas of company's operations differs noticeably. Similarly, different barriers may arise depending on the areas of the company's value chain that are the focus of the enterprises' internationalisation strategies. Purpose of the article: This study aims to identify barriers to internationalisation regarding various areas of a company's value chain. The study employs the Value Chain Model by Porter. Methods: The field data was collected using a questionnaire survey on a sample of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in countries in the Baltic Sea region (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland). A multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the impact of barriers on internationalisation. Finding & value added: The study indicates three areas that are most often the subject of internationalisation in SMEs: operations, outbound logistics and marketing and sales. Barriers differ between value chain areas; however, cultural differences and competition are perceived as the most important hindering factors by companies experienced in internationalisation. At the same time, barriers regarding knowledge and finance diminish when companies becoming more experienced in internationalisation in particular value chain areas. This study is one of few employing the value chain framework to examine internationalisation.

Opis:
Cameroon is a net rice importer, and actors’ performance along the rice value chain is yet to be well understood, even though they are presumed to integrate functions along the chain. The aim of the study was to investigate the financial performance of actors in the rice value chain in Ngoketunjia division in Cameroon. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to identify and collect data from 800 actors using a structured questionnaire. The cost-return technique was employed to analyse the financial benefit of actors in the chain. The results showed that the cost of production, milling, wholesaling and retailing per kilogram was FCFA 122.38 (US$ 0.20), for farmers, millers, FCFA 240.79 (US$0.39), wholesalers, FCFA 336.50 (US$0.55), and FCFA 358.90 (US$059) for retailers. The profit per kilogram was FCFA 27.63 (US$0.05) for farmers, FCFA 79.21 (US$0.13) for millers, wholesalers was FCFA 13.50 (US$0.02) for wholesalers, and FCFA 11.10 (US$0.018) for retailers. Farmers and millers had higher gross margins (22.03% and 28.21%) than wholesalers and retailers (5.74% and 4.14%, respectively). The benefit-cost ratio analysis revealed that the rice value chain is profitable to all actors, with benefit-cost values of 1.23, 1.33, 1.04 and 1.03 for farmers, millers, wholesalers and retailers, respectively. Overall, farmers and millers had greater benefit from their activities in the rice value chain in Cameroon and may need less attention in the chain development as compared to wholesalers and retailers with less benefit.

Opis:
Purpose: To incorporate a new value theory based on co-productivity into the value chain analysis. Methodology: We develop a theoretical model of co-productivity and analyze selected examples of high co-productive value chains. Our theory modifies value theories based on the classical approach (A. Smith, D. Ricardo, K. Marx), production factors of land, capital, labor, and knowledge (J.B. Clark), subjective value for the consumer (C. Menger, W.S. Jevons, and L. Walras), exchange value (A. Marshall), energy value (I. Prigogine), value added for the customer (M. Porter and P. Drucker), information value (V. Rometty), and customer attention (M. Goldhaber). Findings: We demonstrate that the co-productivity theory deeply connects all hermeneutic sources of value creation, but more importantly, it opens opportunities for adopting future-oriented sources. Originality: We present an original theory based on co-productivity, previously unused in logistics. We show how the theory helps to shape more effective value chains.

Opis:
A value chain approach is the most viable and pragmatic strategy to develop an effective, inclusive, competitive and sustainable seed system for many crops globally. This study was conducted in the Kailali, Dang and Siraha districts of the Terai and Inner Terai regions of Nepal to map and thoroughly analyze the value chain of the lentil seed system. Primary data were collected through a household survey, key stakeholder interviews and focus group discussions. Altogether, 300 lentil grain-producing and 100 seed-producing farmers were selected for the study. Descriptive statistics, value chain mapping, stakeholder price spread calculation and return on investment were the major tools for the study. Conventional cultivation practices along with incidence of biotic and abiotic stresses ensured non-significant differences in yield, income and benefit-cost ratio (B:C) between local seed users and improved seed users, resulting in a distorted demand pull chain and eventually leading to the lamentable lentil seed system. Total value addition from farm gate to end user was 63.84% of the total retail price. Seed conditioners and processors contributed 28.38% of total value addition. Return on Investment (ROI) per total cost was higher for seed-producing farmers (59.3%). However, ROI per added cost was higher (214.8%) for retailers followed by seed conditioners and processors (96.37%). The total price spread along the chain was 45.21% of the total consumer price, revealing the inefficient marketing system. Scaling up the major factors behind improved seed adoption, like package of practices, use of a specialized production area, the development of stress resilient varieties, technical assistance, training, and subsidy schemes based on production and efficient market system development, can economically benefit lentil-producing farmers, thereby reinforcing the major pulling force of the lentil seed value chain. Appropriate infrastructure, government prioritization, a coordinated policy environment and innovative public-private partnership models across the seed value chain are necessary for overall sectoral growth.

Opis:
For many years European Union has been putting more and more effort toward boosting innovation and becoming the most competitive global economy. The aim of the article is to explore the concept of the global value chain of clusters and the role clusters might play in enhancing the EU competitiveness. The authors develop the concept of integration between clusters and present the examples of clusters cooperation within the global value chain (GVC), both in terms of horizontal and vertical integration. Cooperation of clusters within the global value chains gets more and more intense with the processes of globalisation and, paradoxically, is boosting the significance of regions. Regions with strong cluster structures are becoming platforms for creating knowledge and innovation and enhancing cooperation on the regional, national and even global scale. The idea of cluster cooperation networks in the EU is developed in light of smart specialisation strategy: a tool for enhancing regional innovationbased growth, facilitating the role played by the SME sector and aimed to reduce imbalances in development, both spatial and social. Well-defined and well-managed clusters, operating in line with the economic specialisations of regions, provide opportunities to strengthen the competitive position of local and regional companies and enhance the innovation and technology transfer within the GVC.

Opis:
Teff is a highly valuable grain for Ethiopian people in generating income and achieving food security. Using unique cross-sectional data from husbands and wives, descriptive statistics and an econometric model, this paper analyzes gender roles in the teff value chain in south-western Ethiopia. Primary data was collected from 117 farmers, 38 traders and 14 consumers. Findings indicate that women contribute more than their husbands to teff production, and their labor burden exceeds that of their husbands since they perform reproductive activities in which men do not participate. Most women are involved in the production, processing and retailing of teff. In turn, their husbands control the wholesale process and cash generated. However, it is difficult to calculate the labor share of women in the household. There are very weak linkages between actors of the entire teff value chain. Among the main determinants of teff market supply, education of the respondent, land area, market information and cooperative membership have a positive effect. Conversely, distance to market negatively affected teff market supply. Therefore, enhancing cooperation between teff value chain actors and providing women with access to training, education and extension services should be a policy priority in the study areas.

Opis:
Participation of smallholder farmers in the agricultural value chain is determined by their ability to capture value. There are different concepts of value that should be considered: those that drive an improvement in output value of a smallholder farmer, and those that pertain to smallholder farmers themselves, the functional (upgrading) and experiential value. Upgrading in the value chain takes three major areas of upgrading strategies: product, process and functions (Kaplinsky and Morris, 2008); the authors of this paper argue that these represent the functional value. The authors therefore claim that functional value refers to an improved or enhanced value in a more physical sense (e.g. higher prices per product sold). That leaves experiential value, which is intrinsically gained by the smallholder farmer, and is driven by improved learning and experience, confidence gained and control. Therefore, for a balanced analysis and understanding of the value for farmers participating in the value chain, the authors propose a conceptual framework which includes the elements of experiential value and functional value. The contribution of this work is therefore an expansion of the perceived value approach that may shed more light on the drivers of inclusion and exclusion of smallholder farmers in value chains. This paper begins by expanding the concept of value as it relates to smallholder farmers. Then, the authors propose a conceptual framework for participating in the value chain in an effort to understand the participation of smallholder farmers in agricultural value chains.

Opis:
Article is a part of the scientific discourse concerning the chain approach concepts as a form of cooperation between enterprises. It attempts to systematize the concepts of the logistics chain, supply chain and value chain in the context of cooperation between enterprises on the market. On the basis of a literature review the genesis of chain approach is presented, as well as the analysis of the definition of the indicated chains. The conclusions of the study allow to extract the logistics chain and to identify it as an essential element of the supply chain and value chain. At the same time studies show the increasing relativity of the concept of supply chain and value chain and increasing difficulty in defining the boundary between these concepts.
