Opis:: WhatsApp is a potentially influential informal learning tool that may be used on the go. This study examines its potential utility in EFL writing with special reference to gender. The treatment encompasses a WhatsApp-based instructional program designed specifically to help develop writing performance, along the aspects of content and ideas, organization and mechanics, vocabulary, and language use, among 98 Jordanian eleventh-grade students. The participants were divided into two experimental groups, one male and one female, taught through WhatsApp. The data were collected by means of a pre-/ post-test whose analysis revealed improved writing performance, more for female participants than for their male counterparts.

Opis:: According to Afroline report (see, http://www.afronline.org/?p=16226), the use of mobile phones in Africa is on the rise. By the end of 2011 there were more than 500 million mobile phone subscribers in Africa. East Africa is one of the leading regions in Africa, not only in mobile phone usage, but also in the way people are interact-ing through various social media. Google, for example, is witnessing growth in the use of internet through cell phones social media connection, where it is reported that four out of every ten Google search requests come from a mobile phone. Through digital devices, users create and share narratives, chats, and send stories and various texts including picto-graphs. Such an increase in the use of digital devices includ-ing TV and mobile phones on the one hand, and the intensifi-cation of interaction through social media on the other have implications on the meaning and structure of narratives, and on Kiswahili orature in general. Given this trend, we can only predict what the future of Kiswahili oral literature could be. Kiswahili, the language that connects East Africans together, has a long tradition of orature. With the advent of digital de-vices, and the unprecedented rate of East African users of such devices, what will the future of Kiswahili orature in East Africa be? Using intertextuality theory, the paper addresses these questions by focusing on Kiswahili oral literature as captured through WhatsApp messenger, an instantaneous messaging application for smartphones.

Opis:: This study explored the use of WhatsApp chat group as a platform for extending learning in a blended learning classroom with a small group of undergraduates in the Malaysian context. The aim was to provide learners with the opportunity to reflect the strengths and challenges of using the WhatsApp as an extended learning platform. The students’ reflections were further supported by the online interaction archives. Findings revealed that the majority of the students expressed the preference for WhatsApp in their reflections. However, certain problems were also identified in this study. Based on the findings the study has outlined certain pedagogical implications that can be a guide for the future use of apps in teaching and learning activities.

Opis:: Flipped classroom innovation has attracted the attention of English Language Teaching (ELT) researchers to examine its effectiveness. This inquiry, therefore, elaborates on the effect of flipping (i.e. reversing) individual and collaborative instruction using a WhatsApp application on the cohesive ability of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners as one of the essential elements of writing skills. A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group and a pre-test/post-test design was implemented to find any significant difference between the two combinations. The first group (N=25) was treated using 5 to 10 minutes of cohesion-based video materials and tasks from the WhatsApp group activities of the group members. Meanwhile, the second group (N=25) was treated similarly using individual WhatsApp activities. The findings reveal that the mean score from the collaborative group at 66.17 is higher than the mean score of individual ones at 50.19 with a level of significance <0.05. This means that teaching the topic of cohesion in writing using a flipped approach instruction model through the WhatsApp group turns out to be more effective than the individual one. The results suggest that teaching cohesion using a flipped approach through collaborative WhatsApp learning activities may serve as one of the suitable alternatives to improve EFL learners’ cohesion in writing.

Opis:: Previous studies have indicated inconsistencies in utilizing the mobile application known as WhatsApp in academic vocabulary learning. This study attempts to overcome those inconsistencies by addressing three research aims, namely a) to examine any significant difference of employing vocabulary learning between using WhatsApp-based reporting and receiving on the one hand, and traditional-based reporting and receiving strategies on the other; (b) to determine the best predictor of vocabulary learning, and (c) to draw learners’ attitudes among the four types of strategies. A mixed randomized experimental type of research with pre-test and post-test design as well as survey design has been consecutively applied for these purposes. The results of the study reveal that English Academic Purposes (EAP) learners who expand their academic vocabulary using WhatsApp-based reporting activities achieve better having been exposed to these three different treatments. Learners’ endeavours to find out the mixed Indonesian-English vocabulary definitions by themselves, followed by reporting these to their teacher using WhatsApp turn out to be the best vocabulary learning predictor. Learners’ attitudes observed in this cohort also show positive responses. Since the aspect of familiarity with academic vocabulary learning is not incorporated into this study, future researchers may find filling up this lacuna worth pursuing

Opis:: The study aims at portraying EFL learners’ interactivity and motivational dynamics when engaged in team-based mobile learning (TBML) through WhatsApp within the environment of English for Academic Purposes. Data were collected through survey on online learning engagement and learning motivation and analyzed using descriptive statistics coupled with correlation analysis. Thematic analysis was operative to analyze students’ reflection for more fine-grained insights on the nature of collaborative mobile learning, supported with directed content analysis geared to Activity Theory (AT) on the archives of group’s online discussion. Albeit technical challenges and negative affectivity therefrom, the findings emphasize the potency of WhatsApp as a social-network (SN) learning platform which engages language learners in supportive micro and macro learning environment as the pre-cursor to elevated motivation, self-regulation, and pedagogical rethinking. The implication highlights teacher’s necessity to scaffold group dynamics and condition student’s mentality to live the target language in the mobile learning.

Opis:: The spirit of volunteering lies at the core of the Jewish-Israeli culture. The establishment of the State of Israel relied on Zionist volunteers who had come to build the new country. Furthermore, the Bible, which refers to ‘secretly giving’ to others and includes the commandment to love your neighbour as yourself, encourages all people to help others in times of difficulty and distress. However, studies show that the proportion of volunteers in Israel is only 20%, while the average for the OECD countries is 24% (OECD data base). Nevertheless, there is spontaneous volunteerism in Israel utilising digital media, messaging applications and social networks. This is both a recurrent phenomenon and a one-off effort during a crisis. This study analyses the growing phenomenon of spontaneous volunteerism utilising social media for the purpose of social involvement in Israel. No prior studies of this phenomenon have been found. The aim is to describe the significance of episodic volunteering via WhatsApp as seen by the volunteers themselves and the volunteers’ perception of their own status in Israeli society. Moreover, the study examines the role of spontaneous volunteering in consolidating the volunteers’ sense of belonging to a community. Two hundred and twenty-nine participants, all self-declared and self-organised as spontaneous volunteers using WhatsApp, replied to a web-based questionnaire, which was the research method used in the study. The results confirm that spontaneous volunteers via WhatsApp consider their occasional volunteering valuable and effective. They do not enjoy a distinct status in Israeli society but have a strong sense of closeness and belonging to a community. The study also confirms that religious individuals volunteer spontaneously, men and women alike show high commitment to contributing in times of crisis and the participants’ perception of the public as willing to volunteer in times of crisis is high.

Opis:: Tylko w ostatnim roku ponad 30 osób zginęło w Indiach z powodu pogłosek o porwaniach dzieci rozpowszechnianych w mediach społecznościowych, a w szczególności za pośrednictwem WhatsApp. Dostępność Internetu w Indiach istotnie wzrosła w ostatnich latach dzięki wejściu na rynek Reliance Jo, które uczyniło pakiety danych tańszymi, a przez to bardziej dostępnymi. WhatsApp był najczęściej pobieraną aplikacją. Podczas gdy kraj przygotowywał się do ważnych wyborów, rozpowszechnianie dezinformacji uległo przyspieszeniu. Rządząca partia prawicowa stwierdziła, że w jej grupach WhatsUp uczestniczą ponad 3 miliony osób. Niedawny raport BBC pokazał, iż największa ilość dezinformacji w kraju jest rozpowszechniana przez środowiska prawicowe. Bez względu na to, czy nazwie się to propagandą, dezinformacją czy oczywistymi „fake newsami”, fałszywa lub nieprawdziwa informacja stała się częścią procesu politycznego w Indiach. Co więcej, w ciągu ostatnich kilku lat, indyjskie media zdają się nie sprzeciwiać rządowi i zasadniczo wspierają linię władz. Powodów takiego stanu rzeczy jest kilka i należą do nich korporacyjna własność mediów, regresywne regulacje prawne, jak również całkowite pomijanie mediów przez rządzących. Premier rozmawiał jedynie z kilkoma wybranymi domami medialnymi i w ciągu 5-letniej kadencji nigdy nie otrzymał trudnych pytań. Co więcej, rząd całkowicie pominął media, zwracając się do społeczeństwa bezpośrednio za pomocą mediów społecznościowych. Wszystkie te czynniki tworzą bardzo nabrzmiałą i chaotyczną sytuację informacyjną. Z uwagi na ingerencję rządu w edukację dla większości edukatorów wprowadzanie kursów krytycznego myślenia stało się znacznie trudniejsze. Dzieje się tak mimo podejmowania przez Google News Initative, Facebook czy BBC Schools wysiłków na rzecz wprowadzenia narzędzi do weryfikowania fałszywych informacji.
In India, in the last year alone, over 30 people have died due to child kidnapping rumors spread on social media, specifically WhatsApp. India’s access to the internet shot up in the recent years with the entry of Reliance Jio which made data plans affordable and therefore accessible. WhatsApp has been the most frequently downloaded application. As the country gears up for an important election, the spread of disinformation has accelerated. The right-wing ruling party has claimed that it has over 3 million people in its WhatsApp groups. A recent study by BBC has shown that in the country, most of the disinformation has been spread by the right wing. Call it propaganda, disinformation or plain fake news, false or wrong information has become a part of the political process in India. Moreover, the Indian media no longer seem to be standing up to the government; in the last few years, it has generally toed the government line. The reasons are many, including corporate ownership, regressive laws, and a complete bypass of the media by the powers. The Prime Minister has spoken only to a few selected media houses and has never been asked any tough questions in his five-year tenure. Furthermore, the media has been completely sidelined by this government by it going to the public, directly through social media. All of this has produced a very turgid and messy information situation. With the government also interfering in education, it has become all the more difficult for most educators to introduce critical thinking courses in the country, even though various efforts have been made by Google News Initiative, Facebook and BBC Schools to introduce tools to debunk false information.

Opis:: In Israel, a large number and a wide range of non-governmental volunteering organizations exist in various fields. At the same time, due to the multiplicity of security incidents and other national crises, there are also numerous independent volunteer initiatives emerging within specific communities, small communities, or cities. Private initiatives that started as small volunteer aid have grown mainly thanks to the technological possibilities that enable the transfer of information about a crisis and the needs associated with it. This study examines the volunteers’ perception of effectiveness in a self-organized spontaneous setting, and their sense of belonging to the community and the State of Israel. This article presents a case study of unorganized, spontaneous volunteer activity in Israel in situations of stress and crisis. The study is based on participant observation and semi-structured interviews with those who engaged in spontaneous self-organized volunteer activity. The study findings show that mobilizing volunteers through WhatsApp messages strengthened the sense of effectiveness in performing the task, fostered the volunteers’ sense of belonging to their community, and contributed to the rapid achievement of the task. The study also highlights the socio-moral dimensions that intensify in such a volunteering process and the individual’s feelings about his place in society and his observation of society’s behaviour in general.
W Izraelu istnieje duża liczba i szeroki zakres pozarządowych organizacji wolontariackich działających w różnych obszarach. Jednocześnie, ze względu na mnogość incydentów bezpieczeństwa i innych kryzysów wewnętrznych, istnieje również wiele niezależnych inicjatyw wolontariackich powstających w ramach konkretnych społeczności, małych społeczności lub miast. Prywatne inicjatywy, które zaczynały jako niewielka pomoc wolontariuszy, rozrosły się głównie dzięki możliwościom technologicznym, które umożliwiają przekazywanie informacji o kryzysie i potrzebach z nim związanych. Niniejsze opracowanie bada postrzeganie przez wolontariuszy skuteczności w samoorganizującym się spontanicznie otoczeniu oraz ich poczucie przynależności do społeczności i państwa Izrael. W artykule przedstawiono studium przypadku niezorganizowanej, spontanicznej aktywności wolontariuszy w Izraelu w sytuacjach stresu i kryzysu. Badanie oparte jest na obserwacji uczestniczącej i półstrukturalnych wywiadach z osobami, które zaangażowały się w spontaniczną, samoorganizującą się działalność wolontariacką. Wyniki badania pokazują, że mobilizowanie wolontariuszy poprzez wiadomości WhatsApp wzmacniało poczucie skuteczności w wykonywaniu zadania, wzmacniało poczucie przynależności wolontariuszy do ich społeczności i przyczyniało się do szybkiej realizacji zadania. Badanie podkreśla również wymiary społeczno-moralne, które intensyfikują się w takim procesie wolontariatu oraz odczucia jednostki dotyczące jej miejsca w społeczeństwie i jej obserwacji zachowań społeczeństwa w ogóle.
