For centuries immigration has been a part of human’s life. The factors thatpushed people to leave their home country varied and changed throughout the courseof history. The Polish immigration was mainly conditioned by the political andeconomic situation in the country in the 19th and 20th century.The thesis elaborates on Polish immigration to the United States, its reasons andoutcome. The dissertation also presents how Poles were perceived abroad, whatopinion was shaped about the ethnic group and how it evolved throughout thecenturies.Many books, publications and journals that provided information about Polesoften brought up the question of the Polish stereotype. It often happens that the wayPolish immigrants are perceived by the other nations is shaped not through directcontact, but rather unreal stories and generalizations.The second problem presented in the thesis is the fake conviction that everyindividual is bound to achieve success when arriving to America. After analyzingvarious reports, studies, immigrants’ letters and diaries, it transpired that immigrantsoften overdrew their experiences just to show how successful and lucky they were.However, the reality was totally different. Although jobs in America were financiallysatisfactory, there was no place for Poles in their professions. The only available offerswere limited to the meanest and low-paid occupations that Americans were notinterested in themselves.The question of the contemporary immigration has also been raised. America nolonger runs an “Open Door’ policy. On the contrary – it is a real challenge to apply fora visa and be allowed to settle in the country legally.The study proved that America ceased to be the most attractive destination forimmigrants today and is currently being replaced by the Great Britain, where theimmigration policy is more open and friendly.86The attitude and social standing of Polish immigrants in America has alsochanged as proved in the dissertation. They felt that America is not able to offer thekind of jobs and occupations that would be adequate to their skills, especially if wetake the well-educated immigrants into consideration. Once a person has emigrated,he/she never shares the same enthusiasm they experienced beforehand.The main conclusion is that, as far as the experiences of Polish immigrants areconcerned, America has been overrated and there are countries that provide betterconditions and opportunities for immigrants, for example the aforementioned GreatBritain that currently has become “immigrants’ paradise”.
Niniejsza praca porusza temat imigracji polaków do Stanów Zjednoczonych w czasach od wieku XIX-go do współczesności. Opisuje ich losy, bazując na bogactwie materiałów obejmujących dzienniki, pamiętniki, artykuły, książki oraz wszelakie publikacje. Praca ukazuje jak proces imigracji zmieniał się przez lata, jak była i jest postrzegana zarówno przez imigrantów jak też i mieszkańców państw docelowych. Praca zestawia najróżniejsze wizje, spostrzeżenia i stereotypy. To jakie były i są tendencje, oraz jak wydarzenia w Polsce i na świecie ukształtowały ten fenomen.

Obok pracujących w Polsce cudzoziemców będących obywatelami Unii Europejskiej, zatrudnienie znajdują również obcokrajowcy pochodzący z krajów trzecich. Właśnie tej grupie imigrantów zarobkowych poświęcona jest niniejsza praca. Pierwszy rozdział opisuje aspekty prawne legalnego świadczenia pracy przez cudzoziemców. Rozdział drugi skupia się na zjawisku nielegalnego zatrudnienia imigrantów. W ostatnim rozdziale została przedstawiona skala legalnego i nielegalnego zatrudnienia cudzoziemców spoza Unii Europejskiej w perspektywie ostatnich lat.
The aim of the thesis is to describe labour immigrants from Third World countries. Labour migration is an indispensable element of Polish labour market. Employment in Poland is found by EU citizens as well as foreigners from Third world countries. First chapter consists of legal aspects of the employment of foreigners. Second chapter describes illegal employment of foreigners. Final chapter describes legal and illegal scale of employment. It contains immigrants from countries who are not in the European Union.
