Opis:
From the sinking of the Titanic to the end of World War II, the history of the 20th century conforms to and confirms the behavioral model of stupidity as the learned inability to learn: That is a normal, dysfunctional learning process which occurs when a schema formed by linguistic biases and social norms acts via the neurotic paradox to establish a positive feedback system which becomes first self-sustaining and then renders behavior irrelevant to the environment by carrying detached actions to maladaptive excesses.

Opis:
In 2016, during excavations on a military site, part 1-24, in Las Puławski, a number of remains connected with the 20th century warfare were found. The field fortifications included front-line trenches, communication trenches and shelters. The analysis of their size and function and the artefacts found in the fills indicate that only one of the fortifications may be connected with World War I. The rest of the trenches were built by the 1st Polish Army, which operated in the area in July and August 1944, during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Vistula River between Puławy and Dęblin.

Opis:
The article explores the dynamics of the formation of the image of Belorussia on the German mental map with a consideration of the German occupation policies during the First and Second World Wars. The author suggests that in 1915–18 the Germans tried to “invent” Belorussia in order to overcome the lack of knowledge about this region and, on the other hand strove to gain this “new land” and its population to ensure their own superiority in the East. It seems that the Kaiserreich was indeed tolerant to the profound cultural differences and sought to make use of the local regionalism in geopolitical sense. On the contrary, in the Nazi Germany the cultural differences were initially rejected in favor of the “master race”. In this respect, Belarusians were considered only as a mean to support of the forthcoming colonization. In the author’s opinion, there is much less continuity between the German war policies in the East in 1915−18 and 1941−44 than is generally accepted.

Opis:
Image of Bialystok in the years 1944-1948 is crucial in understanding the spatial changes that occurred during the reconstruction and implementation of economic plans by the communist authorities. Significant destruction of the city, especially its downtown materially affect the possibility of spatial transformations. The article is an analysis of data from the previously known sources on the subject and the documents to which the author has reached. The first part presents the statistics for each group of buildings in the subsequent analyses limited to the present and the pre-war downtown area. The last step is to analyze the spatial damage from the available plans.

Soldiers in someone elses war : the history of African soldiers during the world wars in France and their image in the film "Camp de Thiaroye"
Żołnierze na nie swojej wojnie : losy afrykańskich uczestników wojen światowych we Francji i ich obraz w filmie Camp de Thiaroye
Autorzy:
Kościółek, Jakub
Opis:
The subject of the article is an analysis of the film Camp de Thiaroye (1988), directed by Ousmane Sembène and Thierno Faty Sow, in its historical and political context. The film’s significance lies in its contribution to the critical discourse on French co-lonial policy and the treatment of African soldiers who served in the French army. It reconstructs the events at the Thiaroye camp in Senegal, where, on December 1, 1944, French troops brutally suppressed African veterans demanding overdue wages, leading to the deaths of many. The article outlines the historical background of Af-rican presence in the French military and the evolution of their image — initially portrayed as “savage beasts,” and later as “children” — and explores how such rep-resentations shaped enduring stereotypes and unequal treatment of Black soldiers even after the war had ended. Through a deconstruction of colonial narratives, the filmmakers expose the hypocrisy of the French administration, which relied on Afri-can soldiers during wartime but denied them equal rights in its aftermath. The anal-ysis emphasizes the importance of the film as a tool of historical memory — a mem-ory largely absent from French public discourse — and one that reveals the violent nature of colonialism and its long-term consequences for African societies

Opis:
Basing on historical analogy, the paper analyzes the problem of argumentative manipulation in the Nazi propaganda during World War II.. The present study of propaganda texts took into account two types of linguistic manipulation: “explanation” and “justification”, both playing a crucial role in forming the German postures during World War II. The analysis showed that the Nazi propaganda made use of false historical analogies, i.e. it juxtaposed and compared incommensurable facts, patterns of behaviour, feats leading to victory, etc. The aim of the manipulative technique of false historical analogy, based on explanation and justification, was to boost the Germans’ “combative” morale. This was expected to be achieved by way of shaping the required postures: a complete submission to the Nazi leadership, the endurance vis-à-vis losses inflicted, combating apathy and defeatism, creating a psychological “distance” with respect to the crisis and losses. The justification of the war effort was done through spreading fear, creating the “endurance” posture, appealing to the “Prussian virtues”, etc. The forging of these postures was meant to keep the German nation in the spirit of constant “combative readiness”.

Opis:
The article discusses the refugees’ life during the Great War, focusing on the living conditions on their route to and in exile. The aim here is to grasp the experience that the refugees underwent when they were still uncertain of their future, and when they were venturing into the unknown without being aware of where their journey would take them. The source material concerns refugees who fled from the ‘Congress’ Kingdom of Poland and Galicia to central Russia and western part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It involves personal documents, especially those created during this exile experience, and the accounts included in the press, notably in Ognisko Polskie. The evidence presented in the article shows that the exile was among the most traumatic war events. It also demonstrates that the flight and exile affected various groups in different ways. Children and elderly persons were most vulnerable and most likely to suffer damage to their health or even to lose their lives. It was particularly difficult for them to endure adverse weather conditions and malnutrition. They were also more prone to contagious diseases, especially typhus and cholera. The stay in the barracks camps established in the Austro-Hungarian Empire was another difficult experience. Especially initially the camps were not fi t for housing so great a number of people of different age and gender. Finally, the analysis of personal documents shows the use of different survival strategies in the exile. The refugees showed much determination in finding employment or seeking compensation and various benefits; and there was a significant social mobilization to organize assistance to the refugees.

Opis:
In the article the author presents her interpretation of corporeality in Szczepan Twardoch’s books. She performs her analysis of male body’s image by emphasizing the opposition between biology-based disruptions of social constructs and machine-like process yielding the projection of a perfect soldier. What was indicated by the author is the influence of German authors on Twardoch’s novels, particularly Klaus Theweleit’s works. The analysis focuses on Josef Magnor, the main character of Twardoch’s Drach, serving as a figure of defeat in the context of variegated social relations, most of all relating to masculinity. The key to understand the failure of masculinity in Twardoch’s works seems to be the opposition: the dry – the wet, which facilitates transferring of considerations on war symbols directly into interpretation of Polish recent literature.
