The ethos of management as an academic science
Autorzy:
Sułkowski, Łukasz
Opis:
Ethos (from the Greek word meaning ‘order’) is the lifestyle of a given community, the general orientation of its culture, the hierarchy of values adopted by the community that are directly formulated or deduced based on human behaviour. Numerous authors point to the symptoms of a crisis in science, paradoxically resulting from fast social changes caused to a large extent by scientific development. Consequence of restoring confidence in public, civil and social institutions such as universities, political parties and social organisations should be an increase in civic engagement. Perhaps, the key in this case is orientation towards an increase in social capital and civic engagement, which will lead to the development of ‘network communities’ based on sustainable development and restoring of management academic ethos.

Friendship as a value in academic ethos
Autorzy:
Abassy, Małgorzata
Opis:
The aim of the research work reported here was to clarify the semantics of the notion of "friendship". The main research question is to what extent friendship is recognised by students and teachers as a value constituting the identity of the Jagiellonian University’s academic community. From it follows another one: what role does friendship play in the value system of the academic ethos- does it have the potential to clarify or transform values enshrined in documents and recognised as enduring? This study uses qualitative data generated from the collected research material: semi-structured interviews and online surveys with closed questions, single and multiple choice. Content analysis was used to examine the interviews by identifying words, phrases and sentences related to the research tasks. The conclusions can be summarised as: 1.Friendship functions in horizontal relationships; 2. Friendship is an essential value of university ethos, realised through its other, already recognised and acknowledged, values: fair treatment, kindness, responsibility and respect for the other; 3. Friendship evolves in the system of references; 4. Friendship realised as a value of the ethos leads to a merger of the professional and the private spheres; 5. Friendship is automatically excluded when a vertical relationship appears.

Opis:
Academic ethos is a set of norms that are binding for a scholar as such. (1) A scholar should especially take up useful research, do it guardedly (so without infringing higher values), formulating well asked questions, using effective methods of searching for true and sufficiently justified answers to those questions — and expressing the research results in an exact, adjusted to the object of the research, simple, forcible, concise and beautiful language. (2) A scholar should undertake vital, i.e. new, fundamental, creative and difficult research. (3) Conducting research should be accompanied by passion, concentration, reliability, imagination, and self-criticism. (4) A scholar should be a guide, minder and supervisor for his pupils and co-workers. (5) A Catholic scholar should also be expected to behave in a morally impeccable way, and if he does not meet this expectation, at least he should feel ashamed of it.

Kongres Kultury Akademickiej
The Congress of Academic Culture
Autorzy:
Sztompka, Piotr
Opis:
The Jagiellonian University at Krakow celebrating its 650-th anniversary will host in March 2014 the Congress of Academic Culture. It is the response to the growing doubts about the ascendance of "postacademic science" and "educational industry", away from the traditional idea of the university. The erosion of academic ethos, values and standards, as well as the neglect of the research mission of the university must be stopped, without losing the opportunites provided by the explosive development of university education in the XXI century. The Congress will open the floor for the debate of three generations: established "masters", rising "stars" and promising graduate students.

Challenges of academic ethos : the scientific community’s response to the ostracism of Russian scientists following the invasion of Ukraine
Autorzy:
Sułkowski, Łukasz
Dziedzic, Justyna
Opis:
Objective: The primary aim of this article is to understand how contemporary scientists from the Polish academic community perceive the scientific ethos in the context of ostracism within the scientific community, which emerged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The article focuses on analyzing the epistemological and ethical implications of this ostracism in the academic context, considering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Methodology: For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted within the Polish scientific community (11 participants), with respondents with degrees (full professors, Ph. D’s, associate professors, assistant professors, and professor emeritus), and literature review was carried out. Findings: Based on the discussion, the research findings illuminate diverse approaches within the Polish academic community regarding the ostracism of Russian scientists following Ukraine’s invasion, shedding light on the intricate interplay between personal beliefs, scientific ethos, and educational values while also highlighting the multifaceted ethical challenges faced by scientific research, especially within military and political contexts. Value Added: The study suggests the necessity for academic institutions to establish clear protocols for knowledge dissemination and crisis management that respect the ethos of scientific work while being adaptable to the shifting geopolitical landscape. It is also recommended that there should be a concerted effort to create forums for international scholarly dialogue to ensure that ostracism does not stifle academic collaboration and knowledge advancement.Recommendations: This article contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical insights into how the academic community navigates the ethical dilemmas posed by geopolitical conflicts. Moreover, it underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity of the scientific discourse amidst external pressures, offering a nuanced understanding of the interplay between political events and academic practices.

The spread of pseudoscientific beliefs and opinions is one of the more serious problems of modern societies. Pseudoscientific beliefs and opinions question the authority of science and may lead to serious harms to individuals and whole societies. In recognition of these hazards, the Committee of Ethics in Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences submits the following statement for the consideration of researchers, teachers in higher education and primary and secondary schools, as well as institutions which are responsible for education, and the society at large. The statement characterizes pseudoscience, its main causes and forms, as well as its key ethical aspects. It also contains recommendations for scientists and academic institutions on the appropriate responses to this troubling phenomenon.

Opis:
This sketch is based on the correspondence between Roman Pollak and Stanisław Pigoń between 1918 and 1968. The relationship between these two excellent literary historians, both students of the Jagiellonian University in the early 20th century, has both private and professional aspects. It also illustrates the fates of Polish scientists in the Second Polish Republic, during World War II and the occupation, and in the period of the so-called social realism. The ethics of friendship and the sense of creative fulfilment turned both scholars into friends devoid of jealousy and competition, content with each other’s successes and honestly congratulating each other on their achievements. The friendship between the professors from Cracow and Poznan was also based on respect to everything related to the university and academic calling. They both believed in the university that lasts and persistently fulfils its mission; both felt responsible for it and for the Polish studies in Poznan and Cracow. Finally, they exhibited strong attachment to the teaching profession. In the relationship between Pigoń and Pollak, one may find the realisation of a comprehensive and complete model of academic friendship which encompassed both the exchange of specific goods as well as personal satisfaction and the preservation of the highest personal and moral values.

Opis:
The article presents the source inspirations of what can be called the „Polish university model”. This model emerges in the functioning of Polish universities in the 20th century and is undoubtedly related to the foundations of science laid by Kazimierz Twardowski in the philosophical and logical activity of the Lvov- Warsaw School. The article aims to explore the sources of Twardowski's inspiration that influenced the shape of his school, and also translated into the wider functioning of Polish universities. Among the sources, the author points to the texts of Immanuel Kant, Wilhelm von Humboldt and Karl Jaspers.
