Rejection of adulthood or a new adulthood? : dilemmas and discussions in researching the processes of entering adulthood
Odrzucanie dorosłości czy nowa dorosłość? : dylematy i dyskusje w badaniu procesów wchodzenia w dorosłość
Autorzy:
Krzaklewska, Ewa
Opis:
The article discusses debates concerning the process of transition to adulthood taking place in young adults from around 20 to 35 years old. Events once considered the traditional markers of adulthood, such as leaving the parental home, starting a family or becoming a parent are being postponed or do not occur at all in young adults' lives. As a result new theoretical approaches are emerging that try to capture and describe the transformations within the life course. Researchers describe the process of postponing adulthood, suggest the appearance of a new life stage of 'emerging adulthood', or search for the markers of the 'new adulthood'. The article summarises the ongoing debates, indicating the consequences of the concepts or classifications used, while also pinpointing ethical issues. It postulates a critical reflection of theoretical frameworks and concepts used within youth studies.

The article presents consideration referring to adulthood indices in the context of phenomenon of adulthood postponement which might be observed in Western European countries. Because of the fact that socially determined structure of human life course, which is regulated by social standards and expectations, has undergone crucial changes for the last decades, changes also appear when it comes to the ways of adulthood formulation. More and more frequently adulthood is considered in terms of psychological characteristics such as responsibility or independence. In the article two perspectives of adulthood perception will be described. The first one will treat adulthood as social category whereas the second one will refer to its psychological aspects. Moreover, the article also touches upon the direction of transformations, which appear in connection with socio-cultural changes of recent decades, in understanding what adulthood is.

Opis:
The aim of the research is to investigate the correlation between age and playing styles in an authorial role-playing game. In the designed research the authors have assumed the playing styles defined by Richard Bartle, that is: the socializer, the killer, the achiever, the explorer. The research subjects came from three age groups: university students (18-25), corporate workers (35-50) and seniors (65+). The research was conducted with the use of the quantitative method on the basis of the playing styles observation sheet developed in accordance with the operationalization of Bartle’s taxonomy. Throughout the conducted observations one could observe clear behaviours, adequate with the operationalized taxonomy of Bartle. The dominant type in every age group was the socialiser, on the other hand only a few behaviours were associated with the killer type. In every age category there was a specific pattern of the observed behaviours, which are possible to explain by comparison to the everyday activities of the investigated age groups. Knowledge about the correlation between age and playing style could be useful for game creators and educators, who want to use the game as an educational method.

Health behaviour in early and late adulthood – educational and behavioural aspectsNumerous transformations occurring in contemporary world concern also health and related behaviour. Increasing adaptive and preventive activities of individuals are becoming essential. New educational curricula introduce issues related to health, behaviour and healthy life styles. The research problem presented in the article concerns health behaviour of people in early (390 respondents) and late adulthood (117 respondents). The respondents were students of the Academy of Physical Education or pedagogy, and a fraction of elderly people consisted of students of the University of the Third Age (numbering 63). Our research aimed to compare prohealth activity among the respondents in order to answer the following questions: what the extent of their health activity is and whether health education is refl ected in behaviour. G. Dolińska’s Health Behaviour Survey and Inventory was employed. The research conducted confirmed the existence of significant differences among the respondents. The differences include both the intensity of behaviour and a predominance of certain types. The respondents exhibit an average level of health behaviour, although its increased intensity has been observed in late adulthood, especially among the students of the University of the Third Age. Also the students of health education yielded higher results than the remaining early adults.

Opis:
The  basic assumption is that time, which regulates our existence in the world, is the special medium and that there are “costs (lost opportunities) associated with not investing time wisely” (Zimbardo, & Boyd, 2009, p. 19). The diverse attitudes of certain individuals towards time may be viewed from various perspectives. The author reflects on the time phenomenon from the perspective of learning adults, with regard to three life periods in the process indentified in andragogy as maturing to adulthood. In early adulthood time is especially significant as people assume the role of the ones responsible for their professional development and their family. In the second stage – middle adulthood – due to varying evaluations of their achievements, time is treated either as a friend or as an enemy. In this situation undertaking learning activity becomes a springboard, some kind of antidote to the emerging life problems. It may also bring about fundamental disturbances to the psycho-social balance of an adult person, such as change of his living environment. The value of time as a non-renewable good increases significantly in  late adulthood, after crossing the threshold of 60. This refers particularly to people who consider old age as an important stage of life. Thus, temporal perspective in each stage of adulthood varies, especially when learning is a regular part of life activities of an adult person

The importance of identity style for the level of religiosity in different developmental periods

Opis:
Identity is built in the context of an individual’s professed values, moral principles, and often, religiosity. Adolescence and emerging and early adulthood are times of intensive identity construction and of changes in religious attitudes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterise people across these three developmental periods in terms of the level of their identity and religiosity, and to examine whether particular identity styles allow for the prediction of the overall level of religiosity. For this purpose, the whole sample of N = 1017 individuals and particularly from adolescence (n = 307), emerging adulthood (n = 410), and early adulthood (n = 302) were studied. The results showed a lower level of the informational style and a higher level of the diffuse-avoidant style in adolescence as compared with the two older groups, who did not differ from each other. The overall level of religiosity did not significantly differentiate the developmental groups; however, it was explained by identity formation styles in different ways at particular developmental stages. Results of moderation analyses suggest that the informational style has positive effect only in adolescence; the normative style has positive effects in each age group but is strongest in early adulthood, and the diffuse-avoidant style presents negative effect in adolescence.

Opis:
In the period of young adulthood, i.e., between ages 18–20 and 30–35, the coupling of the duties, goals, and ambitions connected with various life activities takes place, these being in education, participation in the labour market, self-supporting a household, starting a family, becoming a parent, and active participation in the social life. The social and cultural as well as economic changes that are occurring nowadays affect the course of family life as well as the stages of individual development. One of these stages refers to a young adult leaving the family home. However, it is more and more often the case that this moment gets deferred. Research conducted by sociologists and demographers in the recent years shows that the growing share of young people in industrialised countries choose to live with their parents in spite of their adult age. The increase in young adults staying in the family home in the recent years has led to the term ‘nesters’ being coined for them, while the effect of their bond with their guardians being stretched in time is now referred to as the ‘crowded nest’ or ‘cluttered nest’. This article offers an insight into one of the components of the process of reaching adulthood, namely leaving parental home. The qualitative study (carried out in 2012 and 2013) combines statistical analyses and personal interviews; its results are based on 42 interviews with women and men aged between 27 and 38 who live with their parents in Warsaw, Poland. This interview-based analysis focuses on demonstrating the process of nesting of young adults and the interviewed persons’ perception of this behaviour.

The attributes of adulthood recognised by adolescents and adults
Autorzy:
Gurba, Ewa
Opis:
The article has made an attempt to identify the ways in which adolescents and adults see the process of "transitioning into adulthood" and what attributes they think are necessary for an adult person to possess. The problem of "becoming an adult" has been portrayed in the broader context of parent-adolescent relation development. Research by Smetana (1988) has cast some light on a possible source of the conflict: differences in understanding social situations and the role of authority figures by adolescents and their parents. In contemporary society there are no unquestionable determinants of adulthood, a fact very conducive to intergenerational conflict. In the current study two groups of adolescents (15- and 18-year-olds) and a group of adults (38 to 56-year-olds) were examined using a questionnaire by J. J. Arnett (1997) The Attributes of Adulthood. The results show marked uniformity among subjects as to the choice of "adulthood" characteristics. They point to events such as reaching a certain age, completing one’s education or starting a family as the least important in transitioning to adolescence. The most popular categories, regardless of age, included subjective and psychological characteristics, such as financial independence, the ability to accept and fulfil new social roles or accepting responsibility for the consequences of one’s actions. Reference to such ambiguous attributes can lead to parents and adolescents interpreting them differently and thus contribute to misunderstanding and conflict in parent-child relations.

Artykuł dotyczy wyznaczników dorosłości oraz sposobów jej doświadczania. Badania zrealizowano za pomocą wywiadu swobodnego pogłębionego. Przebadano trzy kobiety pochodzące z tej samej rodziny, reprezentujące trzy pokolenia. Sformułowano dwa problemy badawcze: Jakie są wyznaczniki dorosłości według badanych kobiet? oraz W jaki sposób badane kobiety doświadczały dorosłości? Kobiety, mimo że pochodziły z jednej rodziny, opisywały dorosłość i doświadczały jej raczej odmiennie. Wskazane trzy przypadki ilustrują proces dojrzewania emancypacji – w każdym z wywiadów widać jego inne oblicze.
The article concerns the determinants of adulthood and the ways of its experiencing. The research was carried out by in-depth interview. Three women from the same family, representing three generations were interviewed. Two research problems were formulated:What are the determinants of adulthood in women’sopinion? and In what way women experienced adulthood? Although they came from the same family, women described and experienced adulthood rather differently. Three indicated cases illustrate the maturation process of emancipation – in each of the interviews can be seen the other aspect of it.
