Analysis and classification of anglicisms in Polish music jargon — a case study of Gazeta Magnetofonowa

Opis:: As exemplified by the vocabulary of Gazeta Magnetofonowa, one of the most prominent music-focused media in Poland, Polish music jargon is largely dependent on the English language. Having compiled a corpus based on one of the issues of said magazine, all 330 lexemes of English origin are categorised in this thesis and each category is briefly described. Examples from each category are analysed. Numerical data are presented, which show that the majority of anglicisms in Polish music jargon are loanwords, followed by loanword derivatives.
Jak dowodzi przykład słownictwa używanego w Gazecie Magnetofonowej, jednym z najważniejszych mediów muzycznych na polskim rynku, polski żargon muzyczny jest w dużym stopniu oparty na języku angielskim. Po stworzeniu korpusu, opartego na jednym z wydań rzeczonego magazynu, wszystkie 330 leksemów pochodzenia angielskiego znajdujących się w nim zostaje w tej pracy sklasyfikowane, a każda zaproponowana kategoria zostaje krótko opisana. Przywołane i przeanalizowane zostają przykłady z każdej z kategorii. Zaprezentowane zostają również dane numeryczne, które pokazują, że w polskim żargonie muzycznym z angielskiego najwięcej bierze się zapożyczeń leksykalnych, a także derywatów od nich.

Opis:: Keeping up with the rapid civilization development, the Polish language of the post-modern times evolves faster than before. So expanding a language reflects new social and cultural trends. Linguistic behaviours are easy to grasp within certain subcultures. English, as lingua franca of the present serves as a communication tool not only for native speakers, but also for people speaking English as a foreign language (“the Expanding Circle”, KACHRU 1992). Using English words and expressions in everyday communication has become a growing tendency in Poland. Such a phenomenon can be observed among hipsters, the representatives of the post-modern society of the globalisation times, heavily marked with consumerism, individualism and cultural commodification. This subculture sets new trends (P “trendsetting”) which are understood as a specific lifestyle – non-mainstream (P “niemainstreamowa”) art of life and off-culture (P “off-kultura”), as well as a vintage and old-school dress (P “oldskulowe Ray-Bany” etc.). Such incorporation of English into Polish is influenced by the admiration for the SL culture. It is also the linguistic reflection of both globalisation and trendsetting. The aforementioned borrowings are noteworthy and may serve as a rich source of analysis.

Anglicyzmy na polskich blogach modowych

Opis:: The Polish fashion lexicon is nowadays being constantly enriched by words borrowed from English that recently has dominated fashion terminology. In the age of the Internet and widespread globalisation, it comes as no surprise that many new fashion anglicisms emerge first on the Internet. Polish bloggers play a significant role in spreading and popularizing new terms related to the field of fashion and clothes. Thus, their language (particularly the tendency to use anglicisms) constitutes an interesting area of study. The paper aims to examine the tendencies in the way fashion anglicisms are borrowed into Polish on the basis of the linguistic material extracted from selected contemporary Polish fashion blogs. The corpus gathered for the analysis helps to determine what are the possible reasons for the frequent use of anglicisms in Polish fashion blogs and how their overuse may affect readers of such blogs.
W ostatnich latach język angielski zdominował nomenklaturę światowej mody, przyczyniając się tym samym do wzbogacenia leksyki modowej języka polskiego. W dobie Internetu oraz powszechnej globalizacji wiele najnowszych zapożyczeń z języka angielskiego pojawia się najpierw w Internecie. Polskie blogerki oraz blogerzy w dużym stopniu przyczyniają się do popularyzacji najnowszych zapożyczeń modowych. Ich język, a w szczególności powszechna tendencja do używania anglicyzmów, stanowi więc interesujący obszar badań. Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie anglicyzmów modowych oraz tendencjom, jakie można zauważyć w ich zapożyczaniu do języka polskiego na podstawie zgromadzonego materiału językowego pochodzącego z wybranych polskich blogów poświęconych takowej tematyce. Materiał językowy poddany analizie pozwala także na określenie możliwych przyczyn, jakie motywują polskie blogerki oraz blogerów modowych do częstego używania anglicyzmów oraz na ustalenie jak ich nadużywanie wpływa na czytelników blogów.

Opis:: This paper investigates four bilingual English – Upper Sorbian / Upper Sorbian – English dictionaries regarding the presence of Anglicisms therein. The paper describes the place of Anglicisms in the macrostructure of the lexicons as well their treatment within entries either as headwords or counterparts. The paper enumerates their numerical presence as well as the types of borrowings, and the other processes responsible for enriching the lexis of Upper Sorbian with English lexical elements as revealed in the dictionaries. The paper discusses the information regarding the adaptation of English lexical items in Upper Sorbian (phonetic, graphic, morphological and semantic) that can be obtained from the lexicographic works.

Anglicyzmy w języku rosyjskich internautów na przykładzie forum dyskusyjnego World of Warcraft

Opis:: Niniejsza praca skupia się na anglicyzmach używanych przez użytkowników rosyjskiego forum gry World of Warcraft. Głównym jej celem było określenie czynników wpływających na proces asymilacji zapożyczeń. W pierwszych rozdziałach opisano problematykę pożyczek językowych i podsumowano historię anglicyzmów w języku rosyjskim. Przedstawiono także poglądy niektórych badaczy na problem rosnącej popularności zapożyczeń, następnie opisany został proces ich tworzenia i asymilacji. Następnie autor wyjaśnia, dlaczego jako obiekt badań zostało wybrane forum dyskusyjne World of Warcraft. Głównym powodem była chęć analizy nowych zapożyczeń, których początki można łatwo prześledzić, a także obecne na wspomnianej stronie rozległe archiwum wpisów. Analizowane zapożyczenia podzielono na trzy grupy, w zależności od stopnia ich asymilacji. Jako pierwsze zbadano anglicyzmy przechodzące jeszcze proces adaptacji graficznej, skupiając się na porównaniu popularności zaadaptowanej i oryginalnej wersji graficznej wyrazów. Do drugiej grupy należą zapożyczenia, których adaptacja graficzna została zakończona, a które nie wykazały jeszcze aktywności słowotwórczej. Podczas badań zauważono tenencję do skracania zapożyczanych wyrazów. Ostatnia część zawiera analizę gniazd słowotwórczych utworzonych przez najbardziej zasymilowane anglicyzmy. Odnotowano, że ten etap osiągnęły wyrazy, które są najstarsze ze wszystkich badanych, używa ich szersze grono ludzi, oraz mogą być stosowane w różnych kontekstach. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wynika, że głównymi czynnikami wpływającymi na proces asymilacji zapożyczeń są: czas, liczba użytkowników, a także możliwość zastosowania danego wyrażenia w różnych sytuacjach językowych. Autor podkreśla także przydatność internetowych forów dyskusyjnych i im podobnych stron w badaniach językoznawczych z racji na ich rozległe bazy danych, łatwość wyszukiwania zawartości i, w większości przypadków, ogólnodostępność.
The following BA dissertation focuses on the use of English borrowings by Russian-speaking members of the Internet community, specifically those of the active users of the official World of Warcraft discussion forum. The main goal was to determine factors governing the process of a loanword’s adaptation into a language. The first four chapters constitute an introduction to the problem of linguistic borrowings, summarizing the history of English loanwords in the Russian language, describing possible reasons behind said occurrence, as well as some researchers’ approach to the problem and the mechanisms behind it. Then follows an explanation as to why the author chose the World of Warcraft discussion forum as the main subject. This choice was dictated primarily by the willingness to analyze new borrowings, whose origins could be easily tracked as well as the mentioned site’s popularity and relatively long existence, which resulted in the presence of a large, well-documented database of posts. The analysed borrowings were divided into three groups, based on the level of assimilation. The first group comprises words in the process of graphic adaptation. Here the research focuses on the popularity of both the adapted version and its counterpart. In the second and largest category there are borrowings that have been graphically adapted, but have not yet started forming new words. A tendency to shorten loanwords was noticed, where the majority of users prefer the shorter version over the original. The third part focused on the analysis of derivational nests formed by loanwords, noting that words that have reached this stage are the oldest and richest both in possible contexts and number of users of all researched borrowings. In conclusion, a loanword’s adaptation depends on three factors: time, number of speakers using it, and versatility – the possibility of it being used in many different contexts. The author also stresses the usefulness of discussion forums and similar sites in linguistic research, noting their vast, easy-to-navigate data resources and, in most cases, free, public nature.

Wymowa anglicyzmów we współczesnej polszczyźnie.

Opis:: This work concerns the pronunciation of borrowings from English by contemporary Poles. The actual implementation of Anglicisms of Polish language users was presented and analyzed. The research material was recorded by 58 people, who in the analysis were divided into four age groups: children, young people, middle-aged people and the elderly.
Praca ta dotyczy wymowy zapożyczeń z języka angielskiego przez współczesnych Polaków. Została w niej przedstawiona i zanalizowana faktyczna realizacja anglicyzmów użytkowników języka polskiego. Materiałem badawczym były nagrania 58 osób, które w analizie zostały podzielone na cztery grupy wiekowe: dzieci, młodych, osoby w średnim wieku i osoby starsze.

The opinion of Polish users about English borrowings in Polish language

Opis:: This article is an analysis of the lexical system of the Polish language, in which Anglicisms are clearly disseminated. This article presents the historical development of English borrowings in the Polish language system, the criteria for converting Anglicisms to Polish permanently. The article also discusses the research of Polish language users whose attitude towards English borrowings is negative. The aim of this article was to show how strong is the contemporary development of English borrowings. It also includes answers to the questions of whether anglicisms are needed in the Polish language system: can we exclude any of them? Will the popularity of some Anglicisms pass? Is that possible to avoid the risk of losing Polish vocabulary to English borrowings?
Ten artykuł jest analizą systemu leksykalnego języka polskiego, w którym anglicyzmy są wyraźnie rozpowszechniane. W artykule przedstawiono historyczny rozwój zapożyczeń angielskich w języku polskim, kryteria oceny zapożyczanych form językowych, a także wyniki badań nad użytkownikami języka polskiego, których stosunek do pożyczek w języku angielskim jest coraz bardziej negatywny. Celem tego artykułu było pokazanie, jak silny jest współczesny rozwój angielskich zapożyczeń. Zawiera również odpowiedzi na pytania, czy w języku polskim potrzebne są anglicyzmy: czy możemy je wykluczyć? Czy popularność niektórych anglicyzmów minie? Czy to możliwe, aby uniknąć ryzyka utraty polskiego słownictwa na rzecz angielskich zapożyczeń?

Opis:: The study was designed to describe and classify Anglicisms in modern medical Latin used for description of medical diagnosis and procedures in medical records. Obligatory use of Latin for that purpose in Poland until 2007 resulted in formation of a number of the English-derived medical terms. On the base of analysis of 250 medical records, Anglicisms were classified into six classes [(1) English terms that have no Latin equivalents; (2) English terms that are commonly used in Latin also they have proper Latin equivalents; (3) mixed English-Latin phrases; (4) syntactic calques; (5) semantic or phraseological calques; (6) English spelling of Latin words]. Mechanisms of development of Anglicisms were discussed. Anglicisms in Latin represent a unique phenomenon, the effect of modern English on the dead language.
