Opis:: Cultural Policy in Grodno during Perestroika (According to the Documents of the Municipal Authorities): The article is an attempt at an introductory presentation of the Soviet cultural policy at the local level on the example of Grodno in the second half of the 1980s. Based on the analysis of source materials, it can be concluded that the outdated system of organising and managing cultural policy was in conflict with the informal cultural practices of the city’s inhabitants. The declared goals of the state cultural policy, which is still an ideological tool for forming a new man, and the model of disseminating the content of culture clearly did not keep up with the grassroots initiative of the city’s residents in terms of shaping the free time space.

Zdecydowana większość źródeł znajduje się w archiwach: państwowych, kościelnych, uczelnianych, różnego rodzaju instytucji publicznych (np. ministerstwa, zakłady pracy, szkoły, szpitale, instytucje ubezpieczeniowe), prywatnych lub też w zbiorach prywatnych. Studenci pedagogiki, ale także historii prowadzący badania biograficzne zmagają się z różnego rodzaju przeszkodami w przeprowadzaniu kwerend archiwalnych, dlatego też artykuł ten ma na celu wspomóc ich na drodze poszukiwań biograficznych, wskazać przeszkody i zagrożenia, uczulić na napotkane źródła archiwalne. Jest publikacją o charakterze instruktażowym dla studentów, doktorantów i pracowników nieobeznanych z archiwami.
An extremely important element of biographical studies is the choice of methods for collecting data, such as personal documents, letters, diaries, memoirs and notes (i.e., archival sources). The vast majority of sources are stored in the state archives, by the church, universities and various public and private institutions (e.g., ministries, workplaces, schools, hospitals, insurance companies), or in private collections. Students of pedagogy and of history conducting biographical studies encounter a variety of obstacles in their archival queries. The intention behind this article is to help them in their biographical investigations, identify obstacles and threats, and make them aware of the types of archival sources they may encounter. It is an instructional publication for students, PhD students and employees who are unfamiliar with archives.

Opis:: No full monograph has yet been devoted to the history of the Jewish community in Dobrzyń nad Wisłą. This paper, whose subject is the almost completely unknown history of Jews from Dobrzyń in the years 1507-1939, stems not only from the author’s own interests, but also from the need to fill the above-mentioned gap. To study the topic, the author used mainly archival sources, which were the legacy of administrative and political authorities. Fragments of source materials are currently kept in the State Archive in Bydgoszcz and the State Archive in Toruń, and the branch in Włocławek. Especially noteworthy sources include: the vital records of Jewish people (1826-1936), the records of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Office in Toruń (1920-1939), the town records of Dobrzyń nad Wisłą (1917 -1937), and the records of the Board of the National Council (1950-1972). In these collections, the largest numbers of documents are extracts from birth records, official correspondence, minutes from the meetings of local authorities, and municipal inspections from the inter-war period. Apart from the above-mentioned archival collections, the author used a wide range of other source materials, for example, collections of maps kept in the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw and in the District Office in Lipno, as well as very interesting items from private collections. Most of the above-mentioned sources have not yet been published.

Opis:: Unlike in the humanities, the cooperation of Czech and Polish researchers in area of natural sciences has not been successfully explored. Yet, there is ample evidence for the issue in the Czech archives, i.e., the correspondence between Czech and Polish researchers. Going back to the days of the Habsburg monarchy, the scientifi c contacts between the scientists fl ourished from the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s. Particularly effective was the cooperation in the fi eld of nature conservation. The Czech drew on the experience of the Polish scholars, who, e.g., had organised the Pieniny National Park. In addition, unlike the contacts between the humanists in both countries, relations between the representatives of natural sciences were not so heavily dependent on fl uctuations caused by political issues or attitude to history.

Opis:: When carrying out any conservation work it is vital to its success that it be well informed. Of the many potential sources of information which can be utilised during conservation work on historic buildings, archival sources are one of the most underused and undervalued. Such sources can reveal invaluable information about a buildings structure and construction. The use of such sources is a noninvasive means of discovering a significant amount of invaluable knowledge about a structure prior to work being carried out, information that even modern scientific investigative techniques will often be unable to reveal. Despite this, archival sources in their various forms are often only consulted as an afterthought when conservation work is well in progress. This article firstly examines exactly what is meant by archival sources and what forms these take. The sources which can be accessed whilst carrying out archival research to inform conservation work are many and varied and a range of these are examined in this article. These include: - Drawn evidence (plans, engineering drawings, paintings etc.); - Photographs - Written records (bills of quantity, specifications, contracts, descriptions etc.); - Books and catalogues - Film and sound records For each of these source types some notes are given on the different forms which they can take and on the information which can be drawn from the sources to inform conservation work. In many cases practical examples of how such sources have been utilised in the past are provided. For example, accounts can reveal the source of materials used in a building which provides a conservation team with an accurate, non-invasive investigative technique for material matching. Plans can reveal information about a buildings structure and layout that may not be apparent otherwise or which has changed over time. Photographs give an image of the appearance of a building at a particular juncture greatly informing conservation work as to fine detail of a buildings appearance and structure which could not be discerned otherwise. The article then considers 2 case studies where archival sources were used to inform conservation work, the Kibble Palace in Glasgow and the Martyrs Monument in Stirling. The Kibble Palace is a large glass house and archival sources of various types were used extensively to inform the repair and conservation work carried out in recent years. Likewise, archival sources were used to provide information on the original form of many elements during the restoration and repair work at the Martyrs Monument in Stirling. It is hoped these studies will provide readers with further practical examples of the important role archive sources can play in building conservation.

Opis:: Artykuł przedstawia wyniki kwerendy źródeł archiwalnych i materiałów kartograficznych, które pozwoliły na odtworzenie lokalizacji młynów łodnych na dolnym odcinku Wisły i Drwęcy. Zidentyfikowano w sumie położenie 11 obiektów na Wiśle oraz 4 na Drwęcy. Z opracowań dla wcześniejszych okresów wiadomo o kolejnych 5 lokalizacjach na Wiśle, które w większości nie były już wykorzystywane w XIX w. Stwierdzono ponadto występowanie w korycie rzecznym specjalnych budowli hydrotechnicznych towarzyszących młynom pływającym oraz dość częste relokacje pływaków.
This article presents the results of an inquiry into written sources and cartographic materials which allowed the recreation of the locations of boat mills on the lower Vistula and Drwęca rivers. In total, there were 9 locations on the Vistula River and 3 on the Drwęca. From the research works referring to the earlier periods, we know that there were 6 locations on the Vistula, the majority of which had already gone out of use in the 19th century. It was also stated that, in the river channel, there were special hydraulic structures accompanying boat mills and their frequent relocations.
