Presented here is a review of the book by Michael Wooldridge The Road to Conscious Machines: The Story of AI. The book was published in 2021 by Pelican Publishing Company. The book presents a philosophical exploration of the AI-related quest to understand the essence of our minds, ethics, and consciousness. Nonetheless, the book is unconventional as it focuses on failures of past AI programs rather than on AI success stories. The author also indicates the possible pathways to develop new, more efficient AI paradigms. The short technical section at the end of the book offers more in-depth information on topics like Prolog, Bayesian, and deep neural networks.

Artificial Intelligence has made impressive progress in the past few decades, and, especially in the last couple of years, so many different systems able to simulate human response in a very realistic and coherent way have been made available to the general public. This has opened the road to new possibilities for the use of AI in a variety of contexts, starting from the use of generative AI to the shortening of otherwise long working tasks (such as programming). However, it also created unforeseen issues that have yet to be addressed, since there is a lack of legal and ethical guidelines for the use of these new AI tools. This article analyses some of the most controversial applications of these new AI systems, highlighting both problems and ethical concerns, as well as the possible ways in which they can be dealt with in the future.

Opis:
One of the biggest challenges in creating systems of AGI (artificial general intelligence) type is the question of the method for developing decision-making patterns for such machines operating in autonomous mode. The need to build active trust in their functioning forces an ART (accountability, responsibility, transparency) approach, which prefers bottom–up methods in ethics. On the other hand, such descriptive methods expose culturally conditioned, non-egalitarian patterns of behaviour that may be morally objectionable and rather indicate the need to use a top–down approach that applies normative ethical expectations. The paper examines the challenges of using both methods and outlines the need to develop a hybrid approach. The correct functioning of machines using such a hybrid system should be examinated by using an ethical testing process — at the level of output signal. At the end of the paper we present some philosophical assumptions that should be taken into account in the construction of such an ethical test.

The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into industrial processes has seen substantial development, characterized by the shift from Industry 4.0 to the future concept of Industry 5.0. The article identifies a significant gap in knowledge regarding how openness in AI engagement influences consumer trust and confidence in news media. This gap highlights the need for further exploration into the relationship between transparency in AI processes and consumer perceptions. The research utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, gathering insights from academic literature, industry viewpoints, and actual data. We conduct an extensive analysis of existing literature to investigate the process of incorporating artificial intelligence into news creation and its influence on the level of confidence consumers have in the news. We have identified a significant lack of knowledge about the impact of openness in AI engagement on consumer views and trust in news media. Expanding on this discrepancy, we suggest a systematic methodology that incorporates controlled experiments and surveys to evaluate the influence of different degrees of openness on consumer trust and involvement with AI-generated news content. In addition, the paper examines the difficulties in establishing confidence in artificial intelligence (AI) inside the European Union, including several aspects such as technological, ethical, social, and legal considerations. The document presents a thorough plan to guarantee the secure development and execution of AI, with a focus on the significance of transparency, ethics, and teamwork. The study’s results provide vital insights for politicians, news organisations, and industrial businesses as they navigate the intricate process of integrating AI. Comprehensive Plan for Secure AI Development, to address the challenges outlined, the article presents a thorough plan for ensuring the secure development and execution of AI within the European Union. This plan emphasizes the significance of transparency, ethics, and collaboration in building trust and confidence in AI technologies.

Generative artificial intelligence is used to create new content and solutions through its ability to discover relationships in raw data, thus simulating the human thinking process. One particularly popular tool of this type is ChatGPT, which generates text and helps to solve a variety of problems. Consequently, it can also support company management by helping in the performance of various functions. By automating routine tasks, for example, it allows employees to focus on more strategic activities, while the use of data to identify trends supports informed decision-making, which enhances a company’s competitiveness and efficiency. The primary objective of the presented paper was to identify the key areas of application of ChatGPT in management. Accordingly, a quantitative and qualitative bibliometric analysis of the literature on this subject from the Web of Science and Scopus databases was undertaken, with a targeted selection of examples for case studies made based on the main research areas identified through bibliometric mapping. The article not only outlines the general trends related to the growth of the literature on ChatGPT in the field of management and quality sciences, but also specifies the main ways in which this tool supports management. It was noted that due to its ability to generate, automate, analyse and optimise, ChatGPT in management practice primarily supports (internal and external) communication, data use and problem solving.

The subject of the article is the role of information science in the development of research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim is to discuss examples of specific activities undertaken as part of the cooperation between the Institute of Information Studies of the Jagiellonian University and the Institute of Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University, which has been ongoing since June 2023. The cooperation of the institutes includes, from the substantive side, primarily empirical research for the multidisciplinary evaluation of XAI methods, exploration of the applications of methods in the field of social sciences for human-centric modeling of the needs and requirements of users of AI systems, and the issue of evaluation of user interfaces in AI systems. The genesis of this cooperation can be seen primarily in the development of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), i.e. explainable artificial intelligence defined as the pursuit of solutions that will allow people to better understand the mechanisms of AI models. The article discusses the XPM project as an example of an interdisciplinary research project that takes into account the role of information science research. The summary refers to the opportunities and challenges related to conducting interdisciplinary research and formulates the prospects for further research projects.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest rola informatologii w rozwoju badań z zakresu sztucznej inteligencji (AI). Celem jest omówienie przykładów konkretnych działań podejmowanych w ramach trwającej od czerwca 2023 roku współpracy Instytutu Studiów Informacyjnych UJ i Instytutu Informatyki Stosowanej UJ. Współpraca instytutów obejmuje od strony merytorycznej przede wszystkim badania empiryczne służące do multidyscyplinarnej oceny metod XAI, eksploracji zastosowań metod z obszaru nauk społecznych do humanocentrycznego modelowania potrzeb i wymagań użytkowników systemów AI oraz problematykę ewaluacji interfejsów użytkownika w systemach AI. Genezy tej współpracy można się dopatrywać przede wszystkim w rozwoju explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), a więc objaśnialnej sztucznej inteligencji definiowanej jako dążenie do wypracowania rozwiązań, które pozwolą ludziom na lepsze zrozumienie mechanizmów działania modeli AI. W artykule omówiono projekt XPM jako przykład interdyscyplinarnego projektu badawczego uwzględniającego rolę badań informatologicznych. W podsumowaniu odniesiono się do szans i wyzwań związanych z prowadzeniem badań interdyscyplinarnych oraz sformułowano perspektywy dalszych projektów badawczych.

The implementation of artificial intelligence-based solutions not only contributes to increasing the level of innovation and the pace of development of companies operating in the digital space but can also be perceived as beneficial from the user’s perspective. Offering (seemingly) free tools designed to facilitate human work promotes, often unreflectively, their overuse not only for entertainment but also for creating reports, official documents, and even scientific texts. Users interacting with artificial intelligence enter data that may be a company secret or of a private nature. Such actions can lead to a deepening imbalance between the benefits gained by companies offering services based on artificial intelligence and the benefits to users, ultimately posing a threat to the latter’s privacy. This article is not only an attempt to answer questions about whether artificial intelligence can be controlled (from the perspectives of both organizations and users), how to protect privacy in the age of artificial intelligence, and whether it is possible to ensure the right to be forgotten, but it is also a contribution to a broader discussion regarding the often unacknowledged consequences of using generative artificial intelligence services. For this purpose, a multiple case study method was utilized. An analysis of the terms of service of selected AI-based services offered by companies, such as text generation, graphic generation, and immersive experiences, was conducted. Examples of solutions that allow for increased anonymity in the digital environment and the deletion of data on the internet will also be presented.
