Opis:
European industry and beyond, faces the challenge of becoming carbon neutral within an unprecedented short timeframe. An important approach to achieve this goal is the transformation of the current economy to a circular economy. In this context, the reuse of technical products as well as their recycling are in the foreground. Flexibility and adaptability are crucial for the competitiveness of companies. Therefore, adaptive and autonomous assembly and disassembly systems are the key. Classically automated assembly systems are inflexible due to a mostly rigid and predefined sequence control and are mostly strongly oriented towards economic criteria. Existing autonomous production cells, with their focus on autonomy and failure-free operation, also reach their limits in terms of adaptivity. For this reason, intelligent systems are needed that are able to act autonomously and without interference, as well as to cope with complex and cognitively demanding situations and tasks.

Opis:
Today’s shipping industry is experiencing a shortage of properly trained and competent deck and engine officers. This problem is becoming more acute with each passing year and traditional methods to resolve it apparently do not work. It has become obvious that cargo vessels must be less dependent on human operators. The solution lies in the replacement of manned vessels with autonomous ones. The introduction of autonomous vessels encounters several barriers, which need to be analyzed to find ways to overcome them. It requires a multipronged analysis of existing regulations, technical limitations, cyber security, and co-existence of manned and unmanned vessels in waters with dense traffic. The most difficult problems lie in international regulations, which were written for manned vessels only. Such rules need to be reworked before the deployment of autonomous vessels can be sanctioned worldwide. Technical issues are being gradually resolved with the introduction of new technologies. Special attention should be given to the cyber security of autonomous shipping as it requires the transfer of very large amounts of data through wireless networks. Accommodation of manned and unmanned vessel traffic may require a new approach for ship routing to separate both kinds of traffic.

Opis:
The article presents a project of an autonomous transport system that can be deployed in coastal waters, bays or between islands. Presented solutions and development trends in the transport of autonomous and unmanned units (ghost ships) are presented. The structure of the control system of autonomous units is discussed together with the presentation of applied solutions in the field of artificial intelligence. The paper presents the concept of a transport system consisting of autonomous electric powered vessels designed to carry passengers, bikes, mopeds, motorcycles or passenger cars. The transport task is to be implemented in an optimal way, that is, most economically and at the same time as safe as possible. For this reason, the structure of the electric propulsion system that can be found on such units is shown. The results of simulation studies of autonomous system operation using simulator of marine navigational environment are presented.

Opis:
The terms ‘characterization’ (‘classification’) and ‘exercise of characterization’ refer in particular to the efforts made to determine which conflict of law rule - and in the sense presented in this paper, also rule on jurisdiction - which is part of the law of the forum State, should be applied to the circumstances of a particular case. In relation to the norms of private international law of the European Union, the triumph of an autonomous characterization at first sight seems undeniable. The term autonomous characterization (in principle - ‘autonomous interpretation’, the case law usually does not distinguish between exercise of characterization and exercise of interpretation) has been referred to over the last fifty years in order to describe the vast majority of operations of interpretation undertaken in relation to the norms of EU private international law. The contemporary concept of characterization in private law of the European Union, although consistently referred to as ‘autonomous’, does not fully meet the criteria thereof. The papers argues that while the starting point was the autonomous characterization in its pure form (stage one), over time it partially gave way to the place of characterization according to the EU law-oriented legis fori (stage two), and finally it was enriched with new elements which gave it the form of a specific functional characterization (stage three). It is not so much about the consistency of the results of the exercises of characterization with the universal understanding of certain concepts. Exercises of characterization are carried out through the prism of their effects, so as to ensure the effectiveness of the norms of EU law (effet utile) other than rules on conflict of laws and on jurisdiction.

Opis:
Technology has provided language learners with opportunities to learn English autonomously. Despite previous studies in the Hungarian context (e.g., Édes 2008; Szőcs 2017), more research on learner autonomy is required in order to find out what might explain university EFL learners’ lack of autonomy and help them become more autonomous. The purpose of this quantitative study was to address the problem by investigating learners’ perceptions of their own and their teachers’ responsibilities in language learning, their perceived abilities and motivation to learn English, their autonomous behaviours outside and inside the classroom, and the relationships between the above variables. The questionnaire was completed by 74 EFL students from a Hungarian university. The data were analysed by SPSS 26.0. The results indicate that in the investigated context, in the EFL learners’ perceptions, teachers were more responsible for their in-class learning than themselves. Nevertheless, the students demonstrated some autonomy both inside and outside class, to an equal extent.

Opis:
This paper explores the use of machine learning and deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) techniques as a means to integrate multiple sensor modalities into a cohesive approach to navigation for autonomous ships. Considered is the case of a fully autonomous ship capable of making decisions and determining actions by itself without active supervision on the part of onboard crew or remote human operators. These techniques, when combined with advanced sensor capabilities, have been touted as a means to overcome existing technical and human limitations as unmanned and autonomous ships become operational presently and in upcoming years. Promises of the extraordinary capabilities of these technologies that may even exceed those of crewmembers for decision making under comparable conditions must be tempered with realistic expectations as to their ultimate technical potential, their use in the maritime domain, vulnerabilities that may preclude their safe operation; and methods for development, integration and test. The results of research performed by the author in specific applications of machine learning and AI to shipping are presented citing key factors that must be achieved for certification of these technologies as being suitable for their intended purpose. Recommendations are made for strategies to surmount present limitations in the development, evaluation and deployment of intelligent maritime systems that may accommodate future technological advances. Lessons learned that may be applied to improve safety of navigation for conventional shipping are also provided.

Opis:
In this work we explore the use of differentiable programming to allow autonomous movement planning of a small vessel. We aim for an end to end architecture where the machine learning algorithm directly controls engine power and rudder movements of a simulated vessel to reach a defined goal. Differentiable programming is a novel machine learning paradigm, that allows to define a systems parameterized response to control commands in imperative computer code and to use automatic differentiation and analysis of the information flow from the controlling inputs and parameters to the resulting trajectory to compute derivatives to be used as search directions in an iterative algorithm to optimize a goal function. Initially the method does not know about any manoeuvring or the vessels response to control commands. The method autonomously learns the vessels behaviour from several simulation runs. Finally, we will show how the simulated vessel is able to fulfil some small missions, like crossing a flowing river while avoiding crossing traffic.

Opis:
A paradigm shift is presently underway in the shipping industry promising safer, greener and more efficient ship traffic. In this article, we will look at some of the accidents from conventional shipping and see if they could have been avoided with autonomous ship technology. A hypothesis of increased safety is often brought forward, and we know from various studies that the number of maritime accidents that involves what is called “human error” ranges from some 60‐90 percent. If we replace the human with automation, can we then reduce the number of accidents? On the other hand, is there a possibility for new types of accidents to appear? What about the accidents that are today averted by the crew? This paper will present a method to assess these different aspects of the risk scenarios in light of the specific capabilities and constraints of autonomous ships.

Opis:
The authoress examines the subject of autonomous learning during late adulthood. Referring to the book by Knud Illeris 'Three Dimensions of Learning' and to her own research and didactic experiences, she asks questions about capabilities to learn autonomously during successive stages in the life of an adult, where education, being generally a combination of necessity and capability, is often undertaken as a compromise between one's desires and one's life needs as well as between one's desires and social expectations. The authoress takes particular interest in the period of late adulthood that stretches from the turning point in one's life to the point when one's life comes to an end. According to Knud Illeris it is during this period that an individual is being gradually liberated from the social determinants of learning. In order to explain what this turning point in life may be she refers to the concept of biographical experiencing of floating, proposed by Agnieszka Bron (2006, 2009). The authoress also presents her students' reflections on being autonomous while learning, expressed after the meetings with the members of the University of the Third Age in Zielona Góra. Furthermore, she defines the scope of discourse conducted with the students within the frames of andragogy classes, which was inspired by the questions about autonomy and freedom of learning. In the end, the authoress refers to her own biographical research, which were conducted among part-time students from the borderland region and often focused heavily on education as seen from the point of view of obligation and life necessity.
