Early and late ERP correlates of consciousness : a direct comparison between visual and auditory modalities

The majority of previous research on neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) have used the visual system as a model. However, to what extent reported findings generalize to other sensory modalities has not been comprehensively investigated. To fill this gap we directly compared visual and auditory NCCs by testing the same group of participants with two analogous procedures. Participants were presented with near‐threshold visual and auditory stimuli followed by a detection task and Perceptual Awareness Scale (PAS). On the behavioral level, as expected from visual awareness studies, PAS ratings were highly correlated with accuracy in the detection task. Analysis of EEG data revealed that analogous ERP components - early visual or auditory awareness negativity (VAN and AAN) were related to perceptual awareness, but regarding late positivity (LP), it was related to perceptual awareness only in the visual modality. Further, we found that VAN and visual LP exhibited shorter latencies than respective auditory components suggesting earlier access of visual stimuli to consciousness, compared to auditory ones. Finally, neither estimated perceptual thresholds nor amplitudes and latencies of the awareness‐related ERPs components were correlated between modalities, suggesting a lack of a close link between visual and auditory perceptual mechanisms. Therefore, the observed differences between visual and auditory modalities indicate the investigated NCC are rather modality‐specific, and thus that neither of the proposed measures track consciousness independently to the content‐related processing.

Opis:
The purposes of the present study were to explore the relationship between body awareness and negative body attitude, interoceptive body awareness and physical self in women practicing fitness as well as to analyze the determinants of body awareness. The Body Awareness Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness, the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire and the Body Attitude Test were applied to 43 women practicing fitness and 32 non-fitness practitioners. Bodily self-awareness was connected with greater fitness practitioners’ interoceptive body awareness and greater physical self. Noticing and global esteem predicted body awareness in women practicing fitness.

Opis:
A global market necessitates including the evolution of consumer awareness  and the growing importance of consumers in marketing activities. This process  including utilizing existing instruments of marketing communication along with  a new look at consumer motivations (and at information about products). Among  the major changes in consumer attitudes and behavior worldwide are the following  phenomena: more negative attitudes toward advertising, increasing consumer  attention to ethical aspects of business, greater environmental awareness, and  growing consumer product expectations. Th e study shows a close relationship  between social and technological changes. New information technology provides  new opportunities for contact with consumers and between consumers.  It is expected that the current traditional model of communication with the  market, based on information derived from opinion leaders (from athletes, experts,  celebrities), in the interactive communication model will be lead to horizontal  influence derived from individual consumers. Consumers become not only active  seekers of market information, but also creators and relayers of this information  rather than defenseless recipients. Furthermore the responsible consumer is a person  who not only knows his or her rights, but also supports a particular producer  through purchases. Access to information about companies (and their products)  through new media (mobile, internet) allows the consumer to control activities  of commercial organizations (particularly multinational corporations) without  geographic limitations.  Not so long ago, the most important goal was to provide products conveniently  to consumers at an attractive price. Now it seems that brand imaging is increasingly  created by consumers themselves, who in turn create brand history among  themselves. New patterns of consumer behavior give rise to new marketing (and  communication) strategies. Of course, many consumers do passively participate  in the process of marketing communication. However, we must assume that this  new generation of responsible consumers determines a clear direction of changes  in business -consumer relationships.

Prospective and retrospective metacognitive judgments have been studied extensively in the field of memory however their accuracy has not been systematically compared. Such a comparison is important for studying how metacognitive judgments are formed. Here, we present the results of an experiment aiming to investigate the relation between performance in an anagram task and the accuracy of prospective and retrospective confidence judgments. Participants worked on anagrams and were then asked to respond whether a presented word was the solution. They also rated their confidence, either before or after the response and either before or after seeing the suggested solution. The results showed that although response accuracy always correlated with confidence, this relationship was weaker when metacognitive judgements were given before the response. We discuss the theoretical and methodological implications of this finding for studies on metacognition and consciousness.

Our report presents the Eľkonin´s training of phonematic awareness. This programme is suitable for 5-6 years old children or children whose compulsory school attendance is postponed. We are shortly presenting the results of our study that was done in 20 children. The aim of the study was to quantify and to compare the level of phonological abilities in the studied group of children before and after the training. We would like to show that it is a very suitable stimulating programme that is possible to apply in pre-school children with the impaired communication ability and the postponement of school attendance which can be the risk factors in the process of learning and reading. This training can be applied by special educationists, speech therapists and elementary school teachers after passing the course.

Tematyka duchowości człowieka jako istotnego wymiaru jego życia wkracza w obszar rozważań pedagogiki, w tym także do pedagogiki przedszkolnej.Trudności w aplikacji tego pojęcia w tej subdyscyplinie pedagogiki mogą być spowodowane myśleniem o dziecku jako o „niepełnym” człowieku, który dopiero w późniejszym okresie życia rozwija dojrzałe obszary własnego bytowania, jak choćby duchowość. Tymczasem analiza funkcjonowania dziecka w okresie przedszkolnym dowodzi, iż funkcjonuje ono w pełni w duchowym zakresie własnej egzystencji, ale też często – ze względu na szczególne właściwości tego okresu rozwojowego – przekracza w tym zakresie możliwości osób dorosłych. Prezentowany tekst ma na celu wskazanie w jaki sposób i w jakim stopniudziecko w wieku przedszkolnym osiąga umiejętność samoświadomości jako istotnego obszaru jego duchowego rozwoju.
The issue of human spirituality as an essential dimension of his life appears in the field of pedagogy, including preschool education. Difficulties in the application of this concept in this sub-discipline of pedagogy may be caused by thinking of a child as an “incomplete” human being. In this perspective, thechild develops his own spirituality only later in life. Meanwhile, the analysis of the child’s functioning in the preschool period proves that it has its own specific spirituality. Often - due to the special characteristics of this developmental period - a child is more mature in this respect than adults. The presented text aims to indicate how and to what extent a preschool child achieves the ability of self-awareness as an important area of his spiritual development.

The article discusses the issue of peasants’ social and national awareness in Galicia in the fi rst half of the 19th century. An important factor in peasants’ awareness was the feeling of loyalty towards the monarch and state duties. Peasants did not consider themselves a part of a larger community, either a state or national one. They were “imperials” or “locals.” “Imperiality” was expressed by loyalty towards the monarch and belief in his care and protection. “Locality” meant belonging to a local community – a family, a gathering, a parish, etc. Peasants were aware of the economic system they functioned in. They knew the regulations of inventories, the common law and new legal acts. They noticed the signifi cance of a document, especially one that verifi ed fi nancial transactions.
