Opis:
Due to an increasing trend of replacing traditional paper navigational charts with electronic ones, requirements for the creation of new ENC have been steadily growing. One example is the precise electronic navigational chart, which is based on accurate mapping of topographic and hydrographic elements. Information about depth of the waters contained on the charts are crucial for the safety of navigation. During the production of precise navigational charts, bathymetric information acquired by a multi-beam sonar system (or swath-bathymetry interferometric system) is used. A multi-beam sonar system emits several signal beams from a single transducer in different directions, which allows to cover a hundred percent of the survey area. The authors of the article carried out an analysis of bathymetric data in terms of differences in their preparation for the production of precise ENC.

Opis:
Crowdsourced bathymetry (CSB) is relatively new concept of collecting bathymetric data. CSB can be defined as the collection and sharing of depth data (and metadata) measured and collected by non-traditional survey vessels equipped with navigation instruments, while maintaining their usual operations at sea. International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) has developed Guidance on CSB. This document provides framework for data collection, processing and information about data uncertainty. IHO has also developed model within CSB concept in order to make standardization of CSB data. The data collected using CSB may represent valuable supplement to the existing data collected by hydrographic survey. Despite this fact it is necessary to emphasize that CSB data cannot be used as official data. CSB data collection has also potential legal issues due to the character of sounding passage within territorial and internal waters of coastal states. This paper emphasized the differences between hydrographic survey and CSB. Advantages and disadvantages are analyzed with it's potential implication on safety of navigation. Due to the CSB data collection model limitations, development of bathymetric data collection model on national level is recommended.

Opis:
Digital hydrographic products include the ENC Electronic Navigational Charts and the IENC Inland Electronic Navigational Charts used for inland shipping. The process of IENC production comprises data acquisition and editing. Each object belongs to a class specified in the applicable standards and possesses necessary attributes. IENC cells include, among others, data related to depths in a given water body. Contemporary bathymetric measuring systems allow for saving more and more data of increased quality. Examples of systems characterized by the ability to acquisition high density data are interferometer systems. The authors of this article used GeoSwath Plus 250 kHz sonar system to collect bathymetric data. Bathymetric data included in the IENC cell should be up to date, structured and easy to manage. A piece of software by the ESRI Company, also dedicated to creating hydrographic products, allows to do just that. The authors have used a specialized geodatabase during the IENC production, which made managing bathymetric data easier. The article describes an analysis of the geodatabase’s functionality during the production of electronic navigational chart for inland shipping.

Full detailed descriptions of the two species of Obtusoecia, one of two planktonic halocyprid ostracod genera that are bipolar, demonstrate that the taxonomic separation of these two forms formerly considered to be conspecific, is valid. The segregation of the genus from Porroecia is also validated. The value of characters of limbs other than the first and second antennae particularly in defining halocyprid genera is emphasised. Zoogeographical distributions of the two species based on comprehensive compilations of both published and unpublished data show that O. obtusata is confined to the North Atlantic, whereas O. antarctica has an Antarctic circumpolar distribution. Detailed bathymetric profiles show that O. obtusata is a shallow mesopelagic species that is overwhelmingly dominant at depths of 50–200 m in subpolar seas, and shows limited ability to submerge at lower depths, so thatit is restricted to seas that have a marked seasonal cycle of turn-over and stratification. It is postulated that the bathymetric distributions of the two species are similar, also that O. antarcticais more likely to be ancestral to O. obtusata than vice versa.

Opis:
This article presents the performance of a new approach to determine the model order for the modified Prony method applied to swath acoustic mapping. Key requirements for any mapping application are depth determination accuracy and angular resolution. Depth determination accuracy is strictly related to angular accuracy and geometrical relations between receiver and sources of the backscattered signal. Angular resolution determines detection capabilities of targets laying on the seafloor. Performance of the proposed method, in terms of these two parameters, is tested against a simulated signal in a number of generic configurations, and compared to the results of other methods applied to the same signal.

The results of the accuracy measurements of phase differencing bathymetric sonar (PDBS) system in shallow waters are presented in the article. The measurement results were compared with the theoretical calculations for sonar system accuracy and international standards for hydrographic surveys. The proposed formulas enable to assess a priori sonar system performance using system quality factor (SQF), which takes into account influence of variable environmental conditions and auxiliary sensors on depth accuracy in a real-life scenario. The proposed SQF can be used in survey planning process to predict the swath width.

Opis:
The paper analyses the changes in the Strzeszyńskie lake basin, located within the borders of the city of Poznań. The study was based on five topographic maps from the years: Moreover, the morphometric parameters of the basins from 1908, 1992 and 2013 were compared. Although the lake is located only a few kilometers from the center of Poznan, its basin has not changed significantly. Undoubtedly, this is influenced by the development of the lake basin. At present, however, there are symptoms indicating the worsening state of the waters.

Opis:
Underwater storage of chemical substances placed on the bottom of the Baltic Sea are a major threat to the environment and the health and life of humans. Today, not all locations of the underwater storage sites are known and worsening of their condition and the tides make a periodic monitoring of the seabed is one of the most important tasks of hydrographic authorities to guarantee the marine environment protection and the safe navigation of vessels whose collision can cause an ecological disaster. The sea bed measurements have been carried out by ship-based echo sounding, but this method is rather expensive. The goal of this paper is to examine the possibility of detection of seabed objects based on satellite imagery and airborne laser bathymetry. The first part of the publication presents the principle of bathymetric data acquisition using bathymetric laser scanner and satellite imagery processing to bathymetric data. The second part of this paper presents an analyses the ALB (Airborne Laser Bathymetry) data and bathymetric data from processed satellite imagery. A comparison to echo sounding data shows only small differences in the depths values of ALB data, more than 95% is between ± 0.5 m, but big differences in the depths values of satellite data. The results of tests to object detection are similar to difference comparison. In data from airborne laser bathymetry is possible to find the object on the sea bed, but in satellite bathymetry data it's very difficult or even impossible to detect some object. This paper presents the data and results from the project 'Investigation on the use of airborne laser bathymetry in hydrographic surveying', carried out by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in cooperation with the Institute of Photogrammetry and GeoInformation, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany.

Opis:
This article presents a new approach to determine the model order (number of principal components) in the modified Prony method applied to swath acoustic mapping. Determination of the number of principal components is a crucial step in the modified Prony method. In the proposed approach the model order is chosen based on the underlying physical model of the underwater acoustic environment, and utilised signal processing operations. This data-driven approach, attempts to make use of all available information to assess the number of signals arriving at the receiver using pipeline processing in lieu of iterative processing.
