Since depression produces a long-term negative impact on quality of life, understanding the pathophysiological changes implicated in this disorder is urgent. There is growing evidence that demonstrates a key role for dysfunctional energy metabolism in driving the onset of depression; thus, bioenergetic alterations should be extensively studied. Brain metabolism is known to be a glucocorticoid-sensitive process, but the long-lasting consequences in adulthood following high levels of glucocorticoids at the early stages of life are unclear. We examined a possible association between brain energetic changes induced by synthetic glucocorticoid-dexamethasone treatment in the prenatal period and depressive-like behavior. The results show a reduction in the oxidative phosphorylation process, Krebs cycle impairment, and a weakening of the connection between the Krebs cycle and glycolysis in the frontal cortex of animals receiving dexamethasone, which leads to ATP reduction. These changes appear to be mainly due to decreased expression of pyruvate dehydrogenase, impairment of lactate transport to neurons, and pyruvate to the mitochondria. Acute stress in adulthood only slightly modified the observed alterations in the frontal cortex, while in the case of the hippocampus, prenatal exposure to dexamethasone made this structure more sensitive to future adverse factors.

Professor Lech Wojtczak spent his entire scientific life at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS, where he worked since 1947. He is the author or co-author of two hundred scientific papers, promoted 15 doctors of science, was the Full Member of PAS and has been awarded with several prizes and honors. Among his students are three successive directors of the Nencki Institute, the authors of the present article. Scientific interests of Professor Lech Wojtczak were always dealing with bioenergectics, a discipline that he led in Poland and Eastern-Central Europe. In particular, his studies focused on the role of fatty acids and their derivatives on bioenergetics, on the regulatory role of surface potential of biomembranes on enzymatic and transport activities, on the regulatory role of calcium and magnesium in mitochondria, on the role of free oxigen radicals in bioenergetics, etc. Apart from being a great scientist, Lech Wojtczak was also a fantastic teacher, and an excellent scientific supervisor. Being well recognized in the world, he was placing members of his research group in foreign laboratories, as well as was sending tchem to courses and conferences. This was opening their minds to the world, and to other cultures, and allowed Lech Wojtczak to form from his collaborators the next generation of good scientists and future leaders. The list of the most important pupils of Professor Wojtczak is given in the article. Lech was also excellent in social contacts, and in creating a friendly atmosphere. Together with his wife Anna, they kept an open home, often inviting collaborators to parties that usually led to long scientific discussions. With the sudden death of Pofessor Lech Wojtczak Polish science suffered a great loss. This eminent researcher, the father of Polish bioenergetics, but also a warm and modest person, will be dearly missed.

Opis:
In the diet of vipers rodents predominate. The bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreb.) is the most common prey animal. Also frog are rathter frequently consumed. The calculated consumption is 349.8 kcal per adult individual per year, or 25 rodents, 6 frogs and few animals from other systematic groups. As the density of vipers in the study area was one individual per hectar, the impact of this predator on rodent population seems to be insignificant.

The research presents analysis of the technologies of conversion of bioenergy agricultural raw materials. Purchase of bioenergy equipment is impossible without investments into bioenergetics. Thus, there is a necessity to develop an investment project. The article defines main indicators for investment project assessment, i.e. net present value, internal rate of return, modification internal rate of return, discounted payback period, investment profitability index, and gives classification of investment projects. The works proves that, considering substantial differences of different kinds of energy products and ways of their obtaining, analysis of biomass conversion technologies should be made separately for each kind of it. It is confirmed that biogas is one of the most prospective energy resources, supplying improvement of ecological conditions of production processes. The author of the article argues reasonability to apply technologies of briquetting and pelleting of dry biomass. The research studies methodological approaches to determination of prime cost of a unit of energy of the main kinds of biomass conversion. It is proved that, comparing to traditional energy products, such as natural gas, stove fuel, petrol and diesel fuel, prime cost of the energy products, obtained by conversion of agricultural biomass, is substantially lower, proving economic efficiency and reasonability of the technologies application.

Modulation of cellular bioenergetics by CO-releasing molecules and NO-donors inhibits the interaction of cancer cells with human lung microvascular endothelial cells

Interactions between cancer cells and the endothelium play a crucial role during metastasis. Here we examined the effects of a carbon monoxide-releasing molecule (CORM-401) and a nitric oxide donor (PAPA NONOate) given alone or in combination on breast cancer cell adhesion and transmigration across the lung microvascular endothelium. We further explored whether the effects of CO and NO on cancer-endothelial cells interactions are linked with changes in cellular bioenergetics in breast cancer or endothelial cells. We found that CORM-401 and PAPA NONOate alone or in combination markedly decreased transmigration of breast cancer cells across human lung microvascular endothelial cells (hLMVEC), while cancer cell adhesion to the endothelium was diminished only by a combination of the two compounds. In hLMVECs, CORM-401 decreased glycolysis and stimulated mitochondrial respiration, while in breast cancer cells CORM-401 decreased both glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration. In contrast, PAPA NONOate decreased mitochondrial respiration and slightly stimulated glycolysis in both cell lines. When both donors were given together, mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis were both profoundly inhibited, and cancer-endothelial cells interactions were additively suppressed. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), involved in breast cancer cell adhesion to hLMVECs, was downregulated by CORM-401 and PAPA NONOate, when applied alone, while a combination of both compounds did not cause any enhancement of ICAM-1 downregulation. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that CO and NO differently affect cellular bioenergetics of cancer and endothelial cells and suggest that this phenomenon may contribute to additive anti-adhesive and anti-transmigratory effects of CO and NO. Pharmacological attenuation of metabolism represents a novel, effective way to prevent cancer cell interactions with the endothelium, that is an energy-demanding process.
