Opis:: Objectives: The purpose of this text is to identify the main types of intergenerational relationships and methods of integration different generations applied in everyday life. Recognition of these practices should be used in inclusion policy. Research Design & Methods: This article uses qualitative methods of sociology, in particular biographical narratives (story of life) to explore types of intergenerational relationships. Findings: This paper finds that relational structures are an important part of every biographical narrative. Research has identified five types of intergenerational relationships. Implications / Recommendations: This article stresses the importance of biographical work and the restrictions on the creation of multigenerational groups as a fairly common way of integrating different generations. Contribution / Value Added: The approach presented in this article opens new possibilities for a policy of inclusion and ways of counteracting intergenerational conflicts.

Opis:: The article aims to explore the relationship between biographical work and the strategies of managing precarity (low-paid and unstable employment) and precariousness (insecurity and instability of life conditions in general) in Poland’s new capitalism. Poland witnessed the rise of precarity during the entire capitalist transformation after 1989, while the expansion of precarious, temporary, and non-standard employment accelerated in the first two decades of the 21st century. The main theoretical framework of the article is based on concepts deriving from biographical sociology and was elaborated during a joint workshop with German biographical researcher, Fritz Schütze, within the PREWORK project. The case of a young female shop assistant, Helena, with a difficult family and work background was selected from a larger sample of 63 biographical narrative interviews with precarious young workers in Poland. Based on the case study and the broader context of the research project, it is argued that biographical work may have the potential for questioning and challenging precarity; yet, without necessary biographical and social resources, such a process is hard to be completed. As a result, the paper questions the macrosocial vision of “precariat” as the “class in-the-making” and instead offers a detailed account of the microsocial ways of dealing with precarity by a representative of the most disadvantaged group of precarious young workers.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to present an autobiographical account on the prospects and process of academic career in Nordic countries, and specifically in Sweden. The method used is biographical, or self-ethnographic, dealing with life transitions including struggles and experiences when making the career. The point of departure is the final step in the academic career, i.e. Professorship, and reconstruction of the life events backwards, both as diachronic, a moment in time, as well as synchronic, over time dimensions. This includes research initiation, PhD writing, Postdoc experience, habilitation, and struggling to get a position of a senior lecturer and finally a professor. Involvement in various projects and international networking are presented. Biographical work and learning are used to understand how a woman researcher is navigating in a difficult male dominated terrain, including both negative and positive experiences.

Opis:: This paper considers some of possible implications of emigrants’ visits back home. Alfred Schütz’s seminal paper “The Homecomer” provides a theoretical framework for analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews with young Polish people living in Germany. An attempt is made to explore why and how – typical for the emigration processes – a more critical and objective image of country of origin and a growing feeling of strangeness at home deepens emigrants’ capacity for reflection on their life and identity. Consequently, most of them painfully realise that they will never fully assimilate with the country of immigration and they no longer find themselves comfortable in their country of origin. This has crucial implications for their biography. The collected empirical data show that some of emigrants plan to immediately return to Poland in order to save their emotional relationship with those back home. Others find their homeland poorer and less prospective in comparison to Germany. This legitimate their residence abroad. And finally, the negative homecoming experience can perform a very important function in the narrators’ common-sense argumentation, i.e., this should reduce psychological and biographical costs of their emigration career

Opis:: The concept of ‘biographical disruption’ has been a leading framework for studies of the experience of chronic illness. A symptomless chronic condition – bereft of bodily signs ‒ does not similarly present biographical disruption. People with elevated cholesterol are healthy at the same time as medical regimens signal sickness. The empirical material presented in this article, based on interviews with people with elevated cholesterol, suggests that a more appropriate metaphor could be ‘biographical work’ in such instances. The aim of this article is to discuss how people with the symptomless condition of elevated cholesterol continually construct elevated cholesterol in everyday life doing biographical work along shifting contexts. The vocabulary of biographical work constructs a subject who is continually working on building situationally-appropriate identities embedded in the shifting contexts of being sick or not sick. The article shows how people ongoingly ‘do’ elevated cholesterol, creating a mother-cholesterol-identity, a guest-cholesterol-identity et cetera, navigating the dilemma of absence of bodily signs (signaling healthiness) and medical regimens (indicating sickness) against shifting rhythms of biographical particulars in everyday life. Linkages of medical regimens with the rhythms of mothering, vacationing, being a guest et cetera create contexts – ever-emerging ‘cholesterol-biographical rhythms’ ‒ for accomplishing and stretching the cholesterol identity from situation to situation, being adequately compliant with medical regimens.

Opis:: Wpisując się w zwrot kulturowy w analizach klas społecznych, artykuł koncentruje się na biograficznym doświadczaniu międzypokoleniowego awansu klasowego. Opierając się na analizie 30 wywiadów biograficzno-narracyjnych z osobami, które pochodzą z klas ludowych, a obecnie są akademikami/akademiczkami, artystami/artystkami, menadżerami/menadżerkami biznesu, tekst poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, jak obiektywny awans klasowy jest subiektywnie postrzegany przez osoby, którego doświadczyły. Zaprezentowane i omówione są tutaj dwa rodzaje narracji o awansie: problematyzująca (kiedy awans staje się przedmiotem pogłębionej pracy biograficznej) oraz normalizująca (kiedy awans nie stanowi kluczowego wątku w opowieści). Prezentacja wybranych przypadków biograficznych pozwala na wyodrębnienie elementów, które mogą wpływać na stopień obecności mobilności klasowej w narracjach.
Aligned with the cultural turn in social class analysis, this article explores the biographical experiences associated with intergenerational upward mobility. Based on the analysis of 30 biographical-narrative interviews with individuals who transitioned from working-class backgrounds to positions as academics, artists, or business managers, the study aims to address how those who underwent objective class mobility subjectively perceive the process. The article presents and discusses two distinct types of narratives on mobility: problematizing narratives (wherein mobility becomes the central focus of in-depth biographical exploration), and normalizing narratives (where mobility does not constitute a prominent thread in the narrative). The presentation of selected biographical cases facilitates the identification of elements that can influence the extent to which class mobility is manifested in the narratives.

Opis:: Processes of European identity formation are analysed here in terms of identity work and, specifically, relationship (interplay) between biographical and collective identity work. First sections of the text (1 and 2) are focussed on grounding the approach in a range of theoretical orientations (symbolic interactionism and culturalist perspectives), on outlining its methodological implications (the rationale for using the method of autobiographical narrative interviewing and various methods of text analysis), and, finally, on developing research questions and preliminary analytical dimensions of studying the collective identity work, especially in relation to European identity work, the latter being based on results of the author’s research on the minority nation society of Wales (e.g. collective identity constructions, and figurations, in terms of cultural periphery / centre, hybridity, and marginality). In the next step of analysis, these preliminary questions and dimensions are related to problems of European identity work in general. In the next section (3) overall heuristic strategies of the offered project are formulated: the attitude of refractive self-reflection, the dialogical principle of calibrating research interactants’ perspectives, a multi-layer approach to the interplay between individual experiences and a variety of collective meaning resources, the strategy of contrastive comparison of studied cases and, finally, the zooming procedure of focussing (coding) empirical materials. The last section of the text (4) relates to the objectives / expected products of the project concerning dimensions and integrated model of collective identity work in Europe, and their practical implications for a range of social / political activities in education, legislation, governance, as well as for NGOs, social arenas and social movements.

Opis:: W niniejszym artykule poddałam analizie losy bohaterów filmu pod tytułem Cud purymowy. Celem prowadzonych analiz jest rekonstrukcja losów bohaterów tego filmu, a także ukazanie przemiany, jaka dokonała się w ich życiu. Struktura artykułu składa się z dwóch części – teoretycznej i analitycznej. We wprowadzeniu przedstawiam rys historyczny święta Purim, czyli najważniejszego święta dla przedstawicieli religii mojżeszowej, zwanego żydowskim karnawałem. W części teoretycznej prezentuję zestawienie zagadnień dotyczących wydarzeń przełomowych w życiu człowieka. Następnie wyjaśniam kwestie dotyczące struktur procesowych w ujęciu Fritza Schützego. W części analitycznej przybliżam losy bohaterów filmu Cud purymowy, czyli rodziców (Jana i Jadwigi) oraz ich syna (Henia). Proces odkrywania swojego pochodzenia stanowi wydarzenie przełomowe zarówno dla życia całej rodziny, jak i dla poszczególnych jej członków. Powoduje to zmiany w ich biografii, co wymaga podjęcia pracy biograficznej. Losy bohaterów interpretowane są w odniesieniu do struktur procesowych wyróżnionych przez Fritza Schützego. Symboliczne znaczenie ma sam tytuł filmu, który odnosi się do święta, w trakcie którego dokonała się przemiana bohaterów z katolików w Żydów. Dwukulturowość rodziny ujawnia się nie jednocześnie, lecz linearnie.
In this article, I analyze the fate of the protagonists of the film titled The Purim Miracle. The purpose of the analysis is to reconstruct the fate of the protagonists, as well as to show the transformations that took place in their lives. The structure of the article consists of two parts: theoretical and analytical. In the introduction, I present a historical outline of Purim, the most important holiday for the representatives of the Mosaic religion, called the Jewish carnival. In the theoretical part, I summarize the issues that relate to landmark events in human life. Then I explain the issues concerning biographical process structures as seen by Fritz Schütze. In the analytical part, I describe the fate of the protagonists of The Purim Miracle, namely the parents (Jan and Jadwiga) and their son (Henio). The process of discovering one’s origins is a watershed event both for the life of the whole family and for individual family members. It causes changes in their biography, which requires biographical work. The fate of the characters is interpreted in relation to the process structures distinguished by Fritz Schütze. The title of the film itself is symbolic, as it refers to the holiday during which the transformation of the characters from Catholics to Jews took place. The biculturalism of the family is revealed not simultaneously, but linearly.

Opis:: Biografie ludzi żyjących w okresie ponowoczesności wychodzą poza dotychczasowe schematy i nie są już tak przewidywalne jak dotychczas. Człowiek, nie mając możliwości działania na podstawie sprawdzonych scenariuszy, coraz częściej poszukuje profesjonalnej pomocy w zakresie radzenia sobie z codziennością i projektowania swojej biografii. Sytuacja poradnicza opiera się na pomaganiu radzącym się w poszukiwaniach ich własnej tożsamości, przy założeniu, że aktywnie angażują się w ten proces. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie własnej, andragogicznej refleksji nad pracą biograficzną wykonywaną przez radzącego się w sytuacji poradniczej, z odniesieniem do koncepcji pracy biograficznej Juliet Corbin i Anselma Straussa oraz koncepcji trajektorii Gerharda Riemanna i Fritza Schützego.
Biographies of people living in the era of postmodernism go beyond the established patterns and are no longer as predictable as before. A human being, unable to act on the basis of proven scenarios, is increasingly looking for professional help in dealing with everyday life and designing his/her biography. The counselling situation consists in helping a person in the search for their own identity, assuming that they are actively involved in the process of seeking advice. The aim of this article is to express my personal andragogical reflection on the biographical work performed by the person seeking advice in the counselling situation, with reference to the concept of the biographical work of Juliet Corbin and Anselm Strauss, as well as the concept of the trajectory of Gerhard Riemann and Fritz Schütze.

Opis:: This paper attempts to examine biographical consequences and costs of growing up in an alcoholic home and to scrutinize the development of biographical identity of an adult woman (Natalia) who lives with conviction that as a teenager she “dared” to bring into question the “normality” of her own family when escaping the collective alcoholic trajectory of her family through attempting suicide and entering a children’s home. Consequently, she is still guilt-ridden since she feels responsible for destroying the facade of a (false and illusionary) positive family image and for being the one who managed to get out of the collective trajectory of suffering. On the basis of the concept of “betrayal funnel,” as described by Erving Goffman, it is shown that Natalia was sort of “framed” in “reversed betrayal funnel” by a school psychologist – who probably intended to help but her activities turned out badly in the long run. Furthermore, it is argued that her subjective definition of the course of events in her life results not only in a (subliminal) nagging sense of guilt (strengthened by a negative “me” image created by her family) and her obsessive responsibility for her parents and siblings but – in spite of a fulfilling and meaningful life – it still impedes all her attempts to work the trajectory potential through. This has a strong influence on her current world of everyday existence, her personal identity, and biographical orientation.
