Opis:
The taxonomic identity in microbial eukaryotes remains an impediment to discussing ecology, biogeography and phylogeny, mainly due to a lack of standards in organism descriptions and few comparative works. The lobose testate amoebae (Arcellinida) present an ideal study system, as progress is severely hindered due to taxonomic confusion. In the present survey, we have examined the morphology, biometry and ecology of 2400 individuals in the genus Arcella Ehrenberg, 1832, collected from the Tiete River in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We then contrasted these new data with 26 previously described species, varieties and forms, looking for consistencies and trying to establish distinct entities. Using a combination of morphology and multivariate statistics we were able to determine 4 distinct taxa (Arcella hemisphaerica, Arcella discoides, Arcella gibbosa and Arcella brasiliensis), each of them encompassing a number of other non-distinct nominal taxa. We describe in detail each of the 4 taxa with notes on ecology and biogeography, and list the indistinguishable names in an effort to make identification and taxonomy in the testate amoebae a more objective and precise exercise by clarifying the taxonomic identity.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to record and analyse selected biometric data based on the results of measurements of Greyster dogs actively involved in sports. The results were compared with the biometric indices of other dog breeds, including the original breeds from which Greysters are derived and Polish native breeds. The study showed that the Greysters are of intermediate height as compared with the original breeds they are derived from, i.e. shorter than Greyhounds and taller than German Shorthaired Pointers. Their height index was less than one, which means that the height at the withers was greater than the diagonal body length in the rectangular shape of the body. The chest girth was greater than the height at the withers, and the ratio of these values, expressed as the massiveness index, is similar to that of the Polish Greyhound. The Greyster eurysomia index (ratio of chest girth to diagonal body length) was also similar to that of the Polish Greyhound. The biometric parameters of Greysters allow them to run fast. This predisposition was also indicated by the leg length index and the proportions of the lengths of sections of the pelvic limb. Further research is necessary to determine all of the biometric characteristics of Greysters. The results obtained at this stage of research can be used as an auxiliary tool in selecting these animals for breeding or sport competitions. Any information with biometric data may be helpful in establishing a breed standard for Greyster dogs and classifying them as an FCI breed.

Opis:
Shell ultra-structure and morphometrical variability of Nebela tenella were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). N. tenella was isolated from two widely separated populations, one from Switzerland and another from Canada. The shell’s structural elements were similar to those of the other nebelids, but N. tenella has a characteristic peculiarity – always present depressions on the shell surface, which makes an uneven outline of the shell. Moreover, light microscopy and SEM study showed that the collar of the N. tenella represents a turned-over continuation of the neck, which is covered by the same idiosomes as on the shell body. The biometrical analysis showed that the majority of the basic characters of N. tenella vary moderately and give continuous series of transition forms. According to the shell depth and the ratio depth/width both populations were significantly different of each other. Variation coefficients showed that the variability of the characters differs in both populations and the Swiss population is more stable than the Canadian one. All new obtained data for N. tenella raise the question whether the shell’s size, cross section and ultramorphology are reliable enough as characters for the differentiation of N. tenella and N. griseola, and whether they are two distinct species or should just be considered as ecophenotypic variation within one species?

Opis:
Biometric measurements were made on 20 female and 20 male Border Collies. Half of the population of each sex, i.e. 10 animals (active dogs), were either currently participating in disc dog competitions or had recently finished their sporting careers due to age. The other half of the population, i.e. 10 females and 10 males, were not active in sports (non-active dogs). Most of the dogs came from Polish kennels, but some were from other countries. The following measurements were taken: diagonal body length, height at withers, chest girth, forelimb (metacarpal) girth, thigh length, shank length, foot length, and body weight. Statistical analysis of the results was performed, and the body length, massiveness, eurysomia and boniness indices were calculated. Border Collies were shown to have some biometric traits similar to those of Polish hunting dogs and Polish hounds, and some were also similar to those of Polish sheepdog breeds and Polish greyhound. The biometric analysis showed only a few statistically significant differences between active and non-active groups of Border Collies, concerning height at the withers in females and the body weight of males. Consequently, the results did not confirm the research hypothesis that the traits and biometric parameters of Border Collies differ between jumping dogs and dogs that are not active in sport, in connection with their participation in various competitions. However, it can be assumed that for the needs of sport cynology, there will be a need to select dogs predisposed to athletic performance, and analysis of the biometric traits of dogs will be a useful tool in achieving this goal. The results of the measurements collected in this study and the indices calculated from them also contribute to the biometric database of Border Collies.

Opis:
W tym celu przed operacją należy dokonać precyzyjnych pomiarów biometrycznych gałki ocznej i wybrać optymalną formułę obliczeniową do kalkulacji mocy wszczepianej soczewki.
Cataract surgery is currently the most frequently performed surgical procedure in developed countries. In some cases it is also regarded as refractive procedure, and the use of premium intraocular lenses (aspheric, toric, multifocal) allows the patient to become spectacle independent. The improvement of surgical treatment results in rising expectations of patients. The key issue is to achieve the desired refractive outcome. Essential for this purpose are precise measurements of the eye, and selection of the optimal IOL calculation formula. The aim of this paper is to present current techniques of ocular biometry and new biometry devices available in Poland, along with a comparison of their functions. Good understanding the advantages and limitations of the current technology allows to perform measurements efficiently and to achieve highly accurate refractive outcomes.

Identyfikacja użytkownika na podstawie ruchów wskaźnika myszy
User identification based on mouse movements
Autorzy:
Luciński, Piotr
Opis:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of user identification based on mouse movements. This is one of the second-level authentication methods, falling to the field of behavioral biometrics. The re-authentication system is meant to identify the intruder and initiate appropriate action. The recognition of an intruder is a system's ability to determine whether the user is actually the one who he or she claims to be. The results of this study show that the method presented in this thesis, based on clustering of users signatures (consisting of experimentally selected statistical parameters) allows to create a user re-authentication system that works with 93% efficiency.

Opis:
Veratrum lobelianum is a mountain species occurring mainly in the subalpine and montane zone in European and Asian mountains. In Poland, the species has lowlands localities. Three populations of the species were characterized in the Tarnów Plateau (Sandomierz Basin, southern Poland), growing in oak-hornbeam forest and alder carrs. In the similar climatic conditions but varied light and soil conditions (humidity) the species populations differed in morphological traits as plant height, leaves number, leave dimensions, and inflorescence length. The results extend the published ranges of the traits of the species.

Opis:
The Cecilian pine (Pinus ceciliae) is endemic to Balearic islands (Spain). It is a small taxon, some- times treated as synonym of Aleppo pine (P. halepensis), to which is closely related, differing mainly with dense crown shape and upright branches. The other characteristics, which differ between P. ceciliae and P. halepensis concern the cone scale and needle length only. We examined biometrically needles of Cecilian pine from Mallorca (5 tress) and Menorca (9 trees) islands, and compared them to Aleppo pine populations rep- resented by 30 trees from each island. Each tree was represented by 5 needles, and they were studied with respect to 17 morphological and anatomical characteristics. We detected that needles of the Cecilian pine were smaller, but only when compared to the Aleppo pine from the same island. In general, this difference was also observed in the number of resin canals, number of stomata and stomatal rows. Interestingly, the proportions of the needle dimensions pattern were similar in both taxa. In conclusion we stated the results support the taxonomic rank of Cecilian pine as a variety, Pinus halepensis var. ceciliae (Llorens & L.Llorens) L.Llorens, Fl. Països Catalans, 1: 197 (1984)
