Opis:
Mechanical couple stresses modify at a microscopic level optical properties of some materials so they can display gyro-birefringence phenomena. The Optical Cosserat medium is defined and optical rotation tensor relative to couple stress is introduced. The generalized tensor of the dielectric permittivity is written for the Cosserat medium. Split of the plane-polarized light wave on passing through the Cosserat medium is shown and rotation of the azimuth of polarization is expressed by components of the couple stress tensor.

The paper presents a method of measuring the sensitivity of modal birefringence to pressure in birefringent optical fibers, based on a Sagnac interferometer with a birefringent fiber. In this method, the pressure sensitivity of modal birefringence of the optical fiber is determined on the basis of the measurement of the pressure sensitivity of the Sagnac interferometer including the fiber being measured, and the measurement of the group modal birefringence of that fiber, which is also performed by using the Sagnac interferometer. Utilizing the above method, measurements were performed of the pressure sensitivity of modal birefringence of birefringent optical fibers: a photonic crystal fiber and a bow-tie fiber, in the wavelength range 1460–1600 nm. Presented are the results of these measurements and their comparison with the results obtained by using different methods for the same types of fibers.

Opis:
A dual-wavelength high-accuracy universal polarimeter was applied to the circularbirefringence and optical activity measurement in potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP)nonlinear crystal. The experimental setup used two single-mode He-Ne lasers with close wavelengths of 594 and 633 nm as light sources. Measurement has been carried out for two crystal settings in directions of a 45-degree relative angle to the [100] and [010]crystallographic axes. Multiple light reflections inside the crystal sample were considered when processing the results of the polarimetric measurements. The results have been analysed using the optical transmission function for the polariser-sample-analyser system, and 2D intensity contour maps made it possible to determine the phase parameters, systematic errors, and eigenwaves ellipticity. It was found that the gyration tensorcomponent of the KTP crystal is equal to g₁₂ = 1.4 ⋅10⁻⁵ which in terms of optical rotatory power corresponds to the very small magnitude of the rotation value of 2.3 deg/mm.

Opis:
A novel magneto-optical current sensor (MOCS) with two sensing arms is proposed to improve the temperature stability. One of the arms, with a highly stable permanent magnet attached and orthogonal to the other one, is designed to provide a reference that follows the temperature characteristics of the sensing material. By a normalization operation between two arms, the temperature drift is compensated adaptively and a sensing output proportional to the measured current can be reached. A dual-input and dual-output structure is specially designed for the reference sensing arm to demodulate the DC Faraday rotation angle. This scheme compensates simultaneously two main temperature influence factors, the Verdet constant and linear birefringence. Validation tests were carried out and are discussed.

Structural properties of materials change under stress, temperature and work environment. These changes are generally unfavorable. They cause a reduction in strength of materials. This has an impact on the safety and service life of machines and constructions. In the chemical and petrochemical industry the destruction of a structure can be activated by chemical substances. In the energy industry, a key element in assisting the destruction is temperature. In aviation, the typical cause of damage is the process of fatigue. Regardless of the differences regarding/concerning the mechanisms of degradation, typical of the sectors of industry, the end result is the emergence of microvoids and microcracks in the material. In the final phase of the process, dominant cracks are formed. The term of measure of material damage, introduced by Kachanov and Rabotnow, can be effectively used also when considering the impact of microdamages on measurable macroscopic acoustic quantities. A damage parameter proposed by Johnson allows to correlate changes in acoustic birefringence of the material with the parameter describing the degree of damage. In this article the authors presented the nondestructive tests results concerning Inconel 718 alloy subjected to damage caused by plastic deformation. This paper focuses on the evaluation of acoustic properties in relation to the degradation of the materials tested.

The results of investigations of the influence of gamma and proton radiations on absorption, luminescence and birefringence of either pure or Cu, Fe and Cr doped LiNbO3 single crystals were presented. A method of birefringence dispersion testing on the entire areas of plane-parallel plates of LiNbO3 crystals has been illustrated by the influence of both types of irradiation on pure and Fe, Cr and Cu-doped LiNbO3 wafers. It was found that Li NbO3 LN:Cu single crystal shows a different behavior compared with other investigated crystals. First of all it exhibits lower susceptibility to gammarays, the absence of 500 nm additional absorption, and a strong proton susceptibility observed in polarimeter measurements.

Opis:
The paper presents an attempt of application of the acoustic birefringence coefficient for early stage degradation assessment of Inconel 718 nickel superalloy after short-term creep. It is shown that it can serve as a good damage sensitive parameter and, moreover, it can be well correlated with hardness variation.

W artykule zaprezentowano wykonane przez nas włókno mikrostrukturalne o symetrii dwuosiowej. Przedyskutowano również sposoby uzyskiwania anizotropii optycznej we włóknach tego typu oraz wpływ parametrów geometrycznych na dwójłomność włókien, ponadto przedstawiono wyniki symulacji struktur o eliptycznych elementach sieci, eliptycznym rdzeniu i przekroju prostokątnym. Wytworzone włókno scharakteryzowano metodą interferometrii spektralnej ze skrzyżowanymi polaryzatorami. Struktura światłowodu umożliwiła uzyskanie fazowej dwójłomność rzędu 10-4 tj. wartość zbliżoną do światłowodów PANDA.
We report on the fabrication of a birefringent photonic crystal fiber with a photonic cladding composed of elliptical holes ordered in a rectangular lattice. The choice of such configuration allows obtaining birefringence in photonic crystal fibers. In this case two-fold rotational symmetry is achieved and the polarized orthogonal modes (HE11x and HE11y) are not degenerated. We discuss the influence of structural parameters including the ellipticity of the air holes and the aspect ratio of the rectangular lattice on the birefringence and on the modal properties of the fiber.

Opis:
This paper presents a soft glass spiral photonic crystal fiber with circular air holes for achieving high birefringence, large nonlinearity and large negative dispersion. The material used here for designing the fiber is soft glass (SF-57). A central defect air hole is being introduced in the core for achieving high birefringence and for different ellipticity ratios the effect of various optical properties of a photonic crystal fiber are studied. The structure proposed has a high birefringence in the order of 10–2, high nonlinearity of 5828 W–1km–1 and high negative dispersion of –1546.6 ps/nm•km at 0.850 μm. A numerical approach based on the finite element method is used for the design and simulation of the structure. Due to the optimization in the cladding air holes, the fiber can be used as polarization maintaining fibers, in dispersion compensation and other nonlinear applications.
