Opis:
This paper is aimed at investigating activation behaviors for coal-series kaolin using fluidized bed calcination as a novel method. The properties of calcined products at different temperature by fluidized bed calcination were evaluated by determination of weight loss rate, whiteness, chemical oxygen demand (COD), aluminum dissolution degree. The thermal behaviors and reaction mechanism were characterized by thermo gravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), particle size distribution (PSD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that calcination temperature was essential factor determining the properties and crystallinity of calcined products using fluidized bed calcination. Coal-series kaolin transformed into irregular and amorphous metakaolin with excellent properties as calcined at 600-900 °C, which attributed to the dehydroxylation of kaolinite and combustion of carbon/organic matter. Calcined kaolin eliminated activity ascribed to the recrystallization into mullite when calcination temperature was over 1000 °C. It was believed that fluidized bed calcination was an efficient thermal activation technology for coal-series kaolin and the calcination temperature should be controlled accurately.

Opis:
This study offers a new method to synthesize facilely willemite (Zn2 SiO4 ) based phosphor at the temperature of 800°C. The ZnO-SiO2 nanocomposite was calcined at different temperatures between 500 and 1000°C. The structural, morphological and optical properties of the nanocomposite obtained at various calcination temperatures were studied using different techniques. The FT-IR, XRD and the UV-vis result confirmed the formation of willemite phase. The precursor was confirmed to be amorphous by XRD at room temperature, but upon calcination temperature at 500°C, it was transformed into a crystalline structure. The crystallinity and the particle size of the nanocomposite increase as the calcination temperature were increased as revealed by XRD and TEM measurement. The sample exhibits a spherical morphology from 500 to 800°C and dumbbell-like morphology above 800°C as shown by the FESEM images. The absorption spectrum suffers intense in lower temperature and tends to shift to lower wavelength in the UV region as the calcination temperature increases. The band gap values were found to be increasing from 3.228-5.550 eV obtained between 500 to 1000°C, and all the results confirm the formation of willemite phase at 800°C.

Opis:
Several biomedical materials have been employed as drug delivery systems, but natural Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been proven to be exceptionally better than other materials owing to its excellent bioactivity and biocompatibility properties. In this study, natural HAP was obtained from bovine and caprine bones and comparatively analysed for biomedical applications. The bones were hydrothermally treated, calcined in the temperature range of 700–1100°C, held for 2 hours in an electric furnace to remove the organic contents; milled, sifted with 150 μm mesh sieve and then characterized. It was revealed by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) that the bovine and caprine bone samples calcined at 1000°C had calcium/phosphorus ratio (Ca/P) of 1.66 closest to the standard of 1.67. The bovine HAP showed the best crystallinity (86.23%) at 1000°C while caprine HAP had its highest (87.25%) at 1100°C. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that the calcination temperature must be greater than 700°C to isolate high quality HAP. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed that the samples calcined at 800°C had the largest average particle size (85.34 μm) while porosity increases with calcination temperature in both samples. The HAP obtained at a calcination temperature of 1000°C proved to have the best quality for biomedical applications.

Opis:
Calcination and microwave-assisted hydrothermal processing of precipitated zirconium dioxide are compared. Characterization of synthesized products of these two technologies is presented. The infiuence of thermal treatment up to 1200oC on the structural and spectroscopic properties of the so-obtained zirconium dioxide is examined. It was found that initial crystallization of material inhibits the crystal growth up to the 800oC (by means of XRD and TEM techniques), while the material crystallized from amorphous hydroxide precursor at 400oC, exhibits 26 nm sized crystallites already. It was found using the TG technique that the temperature range 100–200oC during the calcination process is equivalent to a microwave hydrothermal process by means of water content. Mass loss is estimated to be about 18%. Based on X-ray investigations it was found that the initial hydroxide precursor is amorphous, however, its luminescence activity suggests the close range ordering in a material.

Opis:
The aim of this communication is to explore a simple and efficient method for fabrication of superhydrophobic surface by candle smoke particles (CSPs). The properties of CSPs before and after the calcination process has been studied by SEM, TEM, TG-DSC, FT-IR and contact angle measurements. The results show that there is a complex mixture of elemental carbon and a variety of hydrocarbons in association with amorphous nanomaterial in CSPs, whose structure and composition leads to superhydrophobic properties. The wetting properties of CSPs can turn from superhydrophobic into superhydrophilic due to characteristic group changes by calcination process. Thus, it is a simple and efficient method to fabricate superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic surface by CSPs at low cost.

The article describes the testing of four selected samples of limestone originating from four commercially exploited deposits. The tests of sorbents included a physicochemical analysis and calcination in different atmospheres. The main aim of the tests was to determine the possibilities for using limestone during combustion in oxygen-enriched atmospheres. Tests in a synthetic flue gas composition make it possible to assess the possibility of CaC03 decomposition in atmospheres with an increased C02 concentration.

Opis:
This study focused on the extraction of nickel from a low-grade lateritic ore. The characterization of representative samples was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and microscopic mineralogical studies. Nickel was uniformly distributed in iron (hydr)oxide minerals. The pre-concentration of nickel was attempted by magnetic separation, but was unsuccessful. The effect of the type of lixiviant, acid concentration, S/L ratio, time, and temperature were investigated in the atmospheric leaching process. Based on the experimental data, optimum conditions for the maximum recovery of nickel were determined under the following conditions: 5 M H2SO4, 25% (w/v), 90 ºC, and two hours. Pre-calcination, for increasing nickel extraction by converting goethite to hematite, was carried out on raw ores at different times (30-180 minutes) and temperatures (180-540 ºC). Recovery was found increasing from 69 to 95% under the same conditions. Kinetic studies were conducted by fitting the data with Shrinking Core (SC) models. The study determined, from the estimate of activation energy, that the rate of reaction controlled by chemical reaction.

Opis:
Physicochemical properties of different oxide systems depend mostly on the method of their preparation and classification, so the main aim of the study was to obtain the MgO·SiO2 hybrid in an aqueous solution and its calcination under assumed conditions. Research scope included evaluation of the effect of the basic parameters of the calcination process (time and temperature) on the structural properties of the final materials. Products obtained by the proposed method were thoroughly characterized. The chemical composition, crystalline structure, morphology and nature of the dispersion as well as parameters of the porous structure were established. The results of research in a decisive manner confirmed the possibility of designing the properties of inorganic oxide systems such as MgO·SiO2, which will definitively scheduled into potential directions for their use.

Opis:
Black TiO2 nanofibers have recently emerged as a promising material that has both advantages of black metal oxide and one-dimensional nanostructure. However, current reduction-based synthesis approaches are not compatible with practical applications because these processes require high process costs, complicated processes, and sophisticated control. Therefore, it is still necessary to develop a simple and facile method that can easily introduce atomic defects during the synthesis process. This work suggests an electrospinning process with an antioxidant and subsequent calcination process for the facile synthesis of black TiO2 nanofibers. The synthesized black TiO2 nanofiber has an average diameter of 50.3 nm and a rutile structure. Moreover, this nanofiber represented a noticeable black color and a bandgap of 2.67 eV, clearly demonstrating the bandgap narrowing by the introduced atomic defects.
