Opis:
In this study, biosolid and wood waste biomass were used as fuel by turning them into fuel pellets. The purpose of making fuel pellets with various compositions was to compare the type of biosolid pellets and wood waste in terms of proximate testing. The benefits of making biosolid pellets can reduce the landfill waste that contributes to the environmental pollution. The results of this research showed the highest water content that is equal to 10.07% was found in the wood waste pellets with the composition of (90:10; the highest ash content, amounting to 33.19% was found in the pellets with the composition of (50:50); the highest value of volatile substances (74.05%) was contained in pellets with the composition (90:10); the highest value of solid carbon (10.13%) was found in the pellets with the composition of (80:20) Meanwhile, the highest calorific value was exhibited by the pellets with the composition of wood waste and biosolid (90:10), equalling 3.822 cal/g.

Opis:
This study aimed to investigate the potential of plastic waste, specifically bubble wrap and packaging plastic, as a fuel source through pyrolysis process. The samples were analyzed using FTIR and GC-MS. The results showed that both samples contained alkanes and alkenes, with hydrocarbon fractions like those found in gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel. The pyrolysis process resulted in hydrocarbon fractions ranging from light to heavy fractions. The bubble wrap sample showed the highest percentage of hydrocarbon fraction in the kerosene range (C10–C13), with an area of 19.23%. In contrast, the packaging plastic sample showed the highest percentage of hydrocarbon fraction in the diesel range (C14–C20), with an area percentage of 19.67%. The calorific value of the pyrolysis products was also determined, with the bubble wrap sample having a higher value than that of gasoline, while the packaging plastic sample had a value close to that of kerosene. The results of this study suggest that plastic waste has the potential to be converted into fuel, which can contribute to sustainable development by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and reducing plastic waste. However, further refinement of the pyrolysis products is needed to meet commercial fuel standards.

Opis:
The concept of different compositional biomass is introduced to enhance the binding properties and utilize the use of different seasonal biomasses. The effect of densification on the heating values of single pure and mixed compositional biomasses is observed with and without applying special type of pretreatment named as ‘Torrefaction’. The moisture contents and bulk densities were also calculated for these briquettes. The effects of average moisture contents and bulk density (which show the swelling nature) on the heating values are also observed. The experiments have been performed on the pelletizer equipment to form briquetted biomass and bomb calorimeter was used to determine the calorific values of different briquettes. Finally, the percentage decrease in the average moisture contents of different categories of torrefied briquettes from non-torrefied briquettes were also calculated and compared.

Every year, scaling plants buy (up to tens of tons) cones which needs to be peeled. After the process of scaling, the cones themselves are waste, which is partly sold. The problem of waste disposal is especially severe in plants where the processing is performed by electrically-powered scaling cabinets, but the problem does not apply to facilities where pellets are burned to produce heat. We examined the heat of combustion and calorific value of the residues from scaling plants that can be used in the production of refined wood fuels. The residues consist of the empty cones of pine, spruce, larch as well as husks and stems of silver fir. Additionally, we conducted measurements of the heat of combustion for wood and cones of each species and compared them to their respective calorific values The results revealed that the average calorific value of the cones is in the range 17.81–19.86 MJ/kg. Our work showed that empty cones have a significantly higher calorific value and heat of combustion than the wood of spruce, larch and fir. In the case of pine, cones and wood did not differ significantly. These results led us to the conclusions that empty de-scaled cones can be utilized as a valuable primary solid fuel or fuel additive for the production of refined products for the local market. Due to the low annual production of cones in comparison to other materials such as sawdust and wood chips, pine cones should be used as a supplement, to enrich fuels of inferior quality by enhancing their energetic properties.

Logistyka dostaw szyszek wybranych gatunków drzew leśnych. Część 2: Transport szyszek. Podstawowym problemem podczas transportu szyszek jest ich gęstość usypowa, która bezpośrednio wpływa na ilość energii zgromadzonej w jednostce objętościowej ładunku. W artykule przedstawiono analizę opłacalności transportu pustych szyszek, które mogą być wykorzystane w wyłuszczarniach lub lokalnych zakładach energetycznych do wytwarzania energii cieplnej w wyniku ich spalania. Analizie poddano szyszki trzech gatunków - sosny zwyczajnej, świerka pospolitego i modrzewia europejskiego, a do transportu zaproponowane zostały samochody o różnej ładowności i pojemności przestrzeni ładunkowej (od 2,4 do 91 m3). Wyznaczona została masa ładunku, jego wartość przy minimalnej cenie zakupu oraz potencjalna ilość i wartość energii, którą można z niej wytworzyć. Stwierdzono, że zakup szyszek po cenie proponowanej przez nadleśnictwa i ich transport między wyłuszczarniami nie jest opłacalny. Możliwe będzie natomiast wykorzystywanie szyszek do celów opałowych przez wyłuszczarnie funkcjonujące w PGL Lasach Państwowych. Aby uzyskać minimalną opłacalność, wartość ładunku szyszek musi uwzględniać tylko koszt transportu, a do ich przewiezienia należy używać samochodów o dużej pojemności komory ładunkowej. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych rozważań teoretycznych można ogólnie stwierdzić, że szyszki powinny być wykorzystywane lokalnie, najlepiej bezpośrednio w wyłuszczarni, w której były łuszczone. Alternatywą wykorzystania szyszek może być np. ogrodnictwo, gdzie stosuje się je do ściółkowania rabat jako ochrona przed chwastami oraz jako element ozdobny.

The basic problem during cone transport is their bulk density, which influences directly the quantity of energy stored in the volumetric unit of load. The article presents an analysis of profitability of transport of empty cones, which can be used at husking mills or local power plants to generate heat energy through their incineration. Cones of three species were analyzed - common pine, Norway spruce and European larch, and vehicles of varying load capacities and cargo space (from 2.4 to 91 m3). The load mass was established, as well as its value at a minimum purchase price and the potential quantity and value of energy, which can be produced. It was found that purchase of cones at the price proposed by the forest services and their transport between husking mills was not profitable. On the other hand, it will be possible to use the cones as fuel by husking mills operating within the structures of the State Forests. In order to attain minimum profitability, the value of the cone load must include only the transport costs, and the transport vehicles used should have large stowage volume. On the basis of the theoretical analysis conducted, it can be stated in general that the cones should be used locally, preferably at the husking mill, in which they were processed. Alternative use of cones may include gardening, where cones are used for mulching to protect flower beds against weeds, and for decorative purposes.

The objective to obtain the recommended (at least 50% by weight) level of recycled and reprocessed raw fractions of municipal waste in the perspective of 2020 might in turn contribute to the deterioration of the fuel properties of waste stream that is intended for incineration. In order to avoid oversizing heat recovery plants their con-struction should be based on well-defined properties of the waste fuel. The author carried out simulation calculations of the impact of changes in the composition of municipal waste on their energetic properties. The calculations of the calorific value of the waste fraction (so called combustible fraction) with the potential to be used as an alternative fuel were done.

The influence of sewage sludge torrefaction temperature on fuel properties was investigated. Non-lignocellulosic waste thermal treatment experiment was conducted within 1 h residence time, under the following temperatures: 200, 220, 240, 260, 280 and 300°C. Sawdust was used as lignocellulosic reference material. The following parameters of biochar have been measured: moisture, higher heating value, ash content, volatile compounds and sulfur content. Sawdust biochar has been confirmed to be a good quality solid fuel. High ash and sulfur content may be an obstacle for biochar energy reuse. The best temperature profile for sawdust torrefaction and fuel production for 1 h residence time was 220°C. At this temperature the product contained 84% of initial energy while decreased the mass by 25%. The best temperature profile for sewage sludge was 240°C. The energy residue was 91% and the mass residue was 85%. Higher temperatures in both cases caused excessive mass and energy losses.

The article presents the results of laboratory tests of selected properties of fuels available on the market and fuels with higher density component B100 obtained from rapeseed oil (10, 30, 50 and 100%). An analysis of the cetane number, viscosity, and weight of the ash remaining after combustion of fuel samples was made. It was found that the cetane number of pure biocomponent is higher than diesel oil of mineral origin and it slowly decreased along with a decrease in the Extras component. All tested samples of fuels have appropriate cetane number to power internal combustion engines with compression ignition. The viscosity of the fuel samples measured at a temperature of 30ºC increased along with an increase in the content of biocomponent and approached the limit values for fuels. According to the results presented by other authors in their studies ash mass decreased along with an increase in the content of the component. Only premium diesel showed less ash mass than other fuel. The study includes also the energy value and the calorific value of liquid fuels with addition of a biocomponent, which power diesel engines. The results of the tests indicate a slight decrease in the calorific value of the fuel along with an increase in the content of biocomponent, which does not affect the ability to power the engines. Laboratory tests have proved that use of methyl esters of fatty acids in diesel fuel is the right choice to power diesel engines.

Opis:
Air pollution has a serious impact on the health of human beings and is a major cause of death worldwide every year. Out of the many sources of air pollution, the smoke generated from household combustion devices is very dangerous due to the incomplete combustion of fuel. Women from rural areas suffer a lot due to this harmful smoke. Diseases like cancer, throat, and lung infection occur in adults and children due to inhalation of this smoke. The traditional chulha used by rural women is operated by using cow dung, straw, and wood, and the air is blown manually by using small metallic pipes. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative stove to maximize flame temperature and minimize air pollution to overcome the health-related issues of rural women. A smokeless stove is presented, in which wood, straw, and cow dung are taken as primary fuel, and superheated steam as a secondary oxidizer for its operation. In this stove, a forced draft is created by the provision of a small fan, which is operated by solar power thus eliminating the need of creating a forced draft manually by the cook which makes this innovative stove superior to the traditional chulha. Owing to the provision of superheated steam, the flame temperature as well as the burning efficiency increases. The cooking time is reduced due to higher flame temperature as compared to the liquefied petroleum gas stove. The main objective of this work is to minimize air pollution and provide a smoke-free environment to the people using such devices as this innovative stove offers complete combustion of fuel. The flame temperature of the designed stove ranges from 595°C to 700°C and its thermal efficiency is 10–17% higher than that of the traditional chulha. The design of this stove is unique, and its maintenance cost is also much less.
