Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum iron (Fe) levels and hemoglobin (Hb) values in Holstein-Friesian calves with different types of milk diet. In total, 20 dairy calves (10 from each farm) were used for the experiment on two dairy farms. One farm provided the calves with a milk replacer twice a day from day 3 until weaning (farm 1), and the other one fed the calves native milk twice a day for three weeks before the milk replacer was administered (farm 2). Blood samples were collected three times, first at the age of 2-7 days, second time at the age of 30 days and last time at the age of 56 - 60 days, for the determination of iron and hemoglobin levels. Our experiment included monitoring of the occurrence of diarrheal and respiratory diseases in all calves. Values of serum iron and hemoglobin during the first sampling on farm 1: Fe 33.18 µmol l-1 (±29.39) and Hb 83.7 g l-1 (±11. 35); farm 2: Fe 8.38 µmol l-1 (±7.90) and Hb 90. 4 g l-1(±8.36). Second sampling on farm 1: Fe 37.35 µmol l-1 (±23.40) and Hb 106 g l-1 (±9.30); farm 2: Fe 5.62 µmol l-1 (±3.42) and Hb 80.3 g l-1 (±16.59). Last time on farm 1 the results were: Fe 42.69 µmol l-1 (±13.50) and Hb 101.0 g l-1 (±6.88); farm 2: Fe 32.79 µmol l-1 (±16. 07) and Hb 89.9 g l-1 (±6. 71). No respiratory diseases were observed on either farm during this study, diarrheal diseases occurred five times on farm 1 and nine times on farm 2. The results show that iron deficiency and lower hemoglobin concentration are more prevalent in animals fed whole milk.

Opis:
Umbilical hernia is one of the most common problems in young calves. This problem occurs in dairy sector as well as in the local farmers. Present study was conducted to compare outcomes of four different techniques of herniorrhaphy. Twenty four young calves (n=24) were divided in 4 groups (A, B, C, and D) which underwent four different surgical techniques. Group A underwent vicryl plus suture material and pants-over-west technique, Group B underwent mesh application with Dexon suture material by using simple interrupted suture pattern, Group C underwent closed method with Nylon No. 3 suture material by using vertical mattress suture pattern and Group D underwent clamp application method with Silk No. 2 suture material by using simple interrupted suture pattern. The result showed that mesh application method was comparatively better with respect to feed intake, body weight gain and healing time. There was no reoccurrence with non-significant hematological changes (p≤0.05). It is concluded that mesh application method is safer than other three techniques and there are no systemic effects of this surgical intervention on calves’ health.

Opis:
In the interest of animal health as well as future consumers, natural additives are increasingly being given to animals, such as probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics. Defined as "natural growth promoters" stimulate growth and proper functioning of the body, which primarily affects the health of individuals as well as the productivity and consequently the quantity and quality of the products they receive. These formulations can be administered to both adult and young adult subjects. For dairy cows, the use of probiotic and prebiotic formulas contributes to an increase in milk yield and a reduction in the risk of mastitis. In calves formulation increases the resistance to diseases of the digestive system, which increases the weight gain of young individuals. Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics are substances that can replace antibiotics in the treatment and prevention of many diseases in cattle.

Opis:
Adequate nutrition of ruminants and physiologically correct assessment of the nutritional value of feed rations need additional knowledge about the quantitative transformation of the main components of any particular feed in diff erent parts of the digestive tract. The study of the principles of substrate energy use is necessary in each particular case to defi ne the actual need in substrates, which determines the effi ciency of their use for implementing biosynthesis and physiological functions. The determination of the infl uence of the energy supply of the diet of young cattle aged 7-12 months on the effi ciency of energy use in the organism. Effi ciency of the use of metabolizable energy of diets for calves with the increased level of energy nutritional value by 5.0% (MEC is equal to 9.6 MJ/kg) promoted the increase of energy deposition and weight gain synthesis by 10.04%, weight gain energy by 19.50%, the effi ciency of the use of metabolizable energy for weight gain by 3.81%.

Opis:
During the initial months of calves’ lives, the young animals are exposed to bacterial and viral infections, and during this period, crucial physiological changes take place in their organisms. Offering calves feed additives that will have a beneficial influence on their organisms and improve their growth while reducing the morbidity rate is the optimal task of feeding. This is the first study to investigate the effect of experimental supplementation for calves with the combination of two feed additives—one containing Lentinula edodes enriched with selenium (Se), and the second containing pancreatic-like enzymes, fat-coated organic acids, sodium butyrate, and silicon dioxide nanoparticles—on the serum Se concentration, selected immune parameters, and the average daily gains in the calves. During the study, the serum Se concentration was examined by means of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the immunoglobulin and cytokine concentrations with ELISA assays. The white blood cell (WBC) count with leukocyte differentiation was examined with the use of a hematological analyzer, and the percentages of subpopulations of T lymphocytes and monocytes, phagocytic activity, and oxidative burst of monocytes and granulocytes with the use of a flow cytometer. The average daily gains of the calves were also evaluated. In summary, the supplementation of the experimental calves with the combination of two feed additives resulted in significantly higher serum Se concentrations, and the immune systems of the calves were not suppressed while the examined feed additives were being delivered. Although not statistically significant, some positive effects on the calves were seen: a tendency towards the improvement of some of the immune parameters evaluated, and a tendency for higher average daily gains in the calves.
