Tytuł:: The availability of social services in analyzed gminas

Opis:: The purpose of the chapter is to show how local centers are assessed and what activities were possible thanks to the possibilities of informal learning context. The analysis uses data from the study of LOWE's participants (n = 346), in which, in addition to quantitative study, also in a qualitative way (by associations) an attempt was made to identify aspects of being active in these education centers. The results showed that half of the respondents continue to use or know the offer of operating Lowe and participate in activities. Activity in these institutions is associated with other activities (social, professional). They are recognized as a place of development, science, knowledge of integration. Research allows to indicate practical solutions for further supporting the idea of Lowe. Research participants have found the significant importance of Lowe and their activating the local community functioning. The value of this study is the combination of quantitative data of the scale of positive assessment of participation in Lowe classes with quality data - statements that allow to understand the context of the assessment and benefits of activity thanks to Lowe.

Opis:: In this article, data was gathered from interviews and observations using content and historical analysis of several women from a reentry program in Hartford, CT (n=32). Interviews illustrate that examining a gendered approach of female offenders provides an efficient foundation on which to answer the question of whether reentry programs are truly gender-specific. The needs of women are different than men and therefore there should be a difference in treatment upon reentry. Two main purposes are served: to investigate women’s narratives about the reason for criminal activity and to examine their specific needs for gender-specific reentry programming. The value of qualitative research in life trajectories is emphasized as a tool to understand gender-specific needs with a particular focus on the life course dimensions of entrance, success, and timing (Thornberry 1997).

Opis:: The article is based on interviews with 15 entrepreneurs. The study was conducted from December 2014 to February 2015. The studied entities did not operate on the market for more than 5 years. The methodology of the study was based on in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The companies operate in Warsaw or in its vicinity. The article will also analyze the startups' business models. Selected case studies will be presented to help answer the following questions: What is the role of the business model in achieving success? Which models guarantee an increase in market share?
Artykuł opiera się na wywiadach z 15 przedsiębiorcami. Zostały w nim zaprezentowane case study, które mają odpowiedzieć na pytanie: Jaka jest rola modelu biznesowego w zdobyciu dużych udziałów w rynku? Badanie było realizowane od grudnia 2014 roku do lutego roku 2015. Badane podmioty nie mogły funkcjonować na rynku dłużej niż 5 lat. Metodą badań były wywiady pogłębione, częściowo ustrukturalizowane. Przedstawione firmy działają na terenie Warszawy lub w jej okolicach. Wyniki badania prezentują elementy modeli biznesowych, które miały szczególe znacznie dla rozwoju startupów. Dla firm nastawionych na zdobycie dużego udziału w rynku kluczowy był zespół, zaś dla startupów „rozwijających się” ważna okazała się szczególna wartość dla klienta.

Opis:: How do activists manage life commitments and membership in a radical social movement organization? Starting with the assumption that activists are ‘more than activists’ who have personal lives that can affect their movement lives, I use identity theory to analyze how competition among identities influences participation in the organization to which they belong. I also assess how the collective identity of a revolutionary socialist organization affects the personal identities of activists. This movement identity is labeled ‘socialist identity’ which must then compete with other identities that the activist may possess. The methods used were modified life history interviews of former and current members, participant observations, and content analysis of the organization’s documents.

Opis:: An increased interest in qualitative research is connected with the revival of the discussion on reliability and credibility of research conducted by qualitative methods. The aim of the article is to present certain selected issues related to conducting qualitative research. Relatively common research methods used in this area are a case study and, well established in the literature on educational research, participatory action research. Other important methods are observations and interviews that are often used as a way of collecting qualitative data, which, supplemented by actual writing, are already recognized as research methods. Finally, the article describes problems of researcher’s positioning towards subjects and the social justice pedagogy based on the concept of service learning (learning in the service of society).

Tytuł:: Perceptions of an older patient on the role of the family doctor in health promotion : a qualitative case study

Opis:: Introduction: Health promotion and disease prevention are important aspects of primary health care. However, limited data are available concerning the opinions of older patients towards the respective services offered by family doctors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate an older patient's perception of the role of the family doctor in promoting his health, and identify those components that are difficult to examine in quantitative research. Methods: A qualitative case study of an 80-year-old man using an in-depth interview was carried out. The interview transcript was analyzed thematically. Our patient was an 80-year-old university-educated man, with stable social and financial circumstances, living with his wife. He had retired early on grounds of ill health (tuberculosis) and had received a disability pension prior to formal retirement. At the time of the interview, his medical problems included mild prostatic hypertrophy, scoliosis and hypertension. He considered his health status to be satisfactory. He had changed family doctor five years prior to the interview, as he had been dissatisfied with the care provided. Results: We found that our patient expected the family doctor to be aware of, and to discuss, the following issues: physical activity, diet, management of stress and mental health, use of alcohol and tobacco, personal hygiene, health screening, use of medication, and social activity. At the same time, our patient perceived the doctor's role as supplementary to his own in terms of the appraisal and maintenance of his health. Conclusions: Our findings provide evidence of what is important in the promotion of health among older people.

Opis:: Aim: This research contributes to the study of the relationship between initial public offering (IPO) under- and overpricing and long-term firm performance as measured by net income. Research methods: Using ordinary least-squares regressions, an international sample of 444 IPOs from the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Italy, and the Netherlands for the period 2013–2017 is analysed. The data was extracted from the Eikon Refinitiv database. Further, an in-depth analysis of three Dutch IPOs by six interviews with five (former) management members and one investment banker is conducted. Conclusions: The results show that the more profitable a firm is in the long run, the likelier positive initial stock returns move towards zero after the first trading day. The case studies support these findings and the concept of asymmetric information between market participants can offer a partial explanation. Additionally, as firms operating in the industrial and healthcare sector grow larger, the offer price tends to be closer to the overall market demand. Nonetheless, no significant relationship is found between initial stock return and net profitability for other industries. While the country analysis also displays no significant relationship, underpricing is more prevalent in the United Kingdom than in the other sample countries. Originality: This article combines a full-fledged quantitative study with a full-fledged qualitative study on one of the most perilous corporate finance milestones, that is, the complex transformation from a private to a public company through a stock market listing. Limitations: The sample composition skews towards underpriced IPOs. Also, although the notion of reverse causality is discussed based on the views of interviewees, no quantitative evidence is provided.

Opis:: Regional development and spatial planning in Croatia are organised as parallel planning systems regulated by different legislations and coordinated by two ministries, the development of which has been strongly influenced by the European Union (EU). In the last two decades, the intensive development of strategic documentation on a local, regional, and national level regarding diverse territorial governance aspects has had extensive analytical scope but little potential for implementation due to the overlapping of responsibilities and disconnected budget and implementation instruments. The Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI) mechanism of implementation contributed to the understanding of multifaceted territorial governance beyond strategic document drafting. This paper analyses the first phase of ITI implementation in Croatia, i.e. the processes which unified functional urban areas, creating the possibility to develop joint management structures and strategies, integrated projects, and common participative planning models.
