Opis:
The demand for castings with superior properties has compelled the development and optimization of manufacturing technologies. By further developing already known techniques, we are able to contribute to the introduction of new research possibilities. The article presents the methodology of conducting simulation tests of the gravity casting process into sand moulds with the use of ablation. The ablation technique consists in spraying water through evenly spaced nozzles onto a mould into which the liquid casting alloy has been poured. The conducted research focuses on an alloy from the group of Al-Si alloys. In order to compare the effects of different techniques, additional tests were carried out for gravity casting into sand and metal die moulds. At the same time, virtual experiments were conducted to develop a simulation methodology for ablation casting technology, taking into account mould degradation. Additionally, the possibility of predicting the final mechanical properties of various manufacturing technologies was tested. Destructive tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties in the cast samples, as well as microstructure tests and secondary dendrite spacing. The results of the mechanical tests are compared with the predicted simulation properties.

Internal casting defects that are detected by radiography may also be detected by ultrasonic method. Ultrasonic testing allows investigation of the cross-sectional area of a casting, it is considered to be a volumetric inspection method. The high frequency acoustic energy travels through the casting until it hits the opposite surface or an interface or defect. The interface or defect reflects portions of the energy, which are collected in a receiving unit and displayed for the analyst to view. The pattern of the energy deflection can indicate internal defect. Ultrasonic casting testing is very complicated in practice. The complications are mainly due to the coarse-grain structure of the casting that causes a high ultrasound attenuation. High attenuation then makes it impossible to test the entire volume of material. This article is focused on measurement of attenuation, the effect of probe frequency on attenuation and testing results.

Opis:
The paper presents a research on the effect of extreme - for the technology of the considered silumin EN AB 47100 - parameters of high-pressure die casting on occurrence of casting nonconformities. Considered was influence of the way of assembling the mould cooled-down to 140-160°C, non-standard for the selected casting, and pouring temperature in the range of 705 to 720°C (higher than the recommended) of non-refined alloy. The castings were prepared with use of a high-pressure casting machine made by Kirov with mould closing force of 2500 kN. Occurrence of nonconformities was evaluated on properly prepared specimens taken from the castings manufactured with various parameters of the injection piston and various multiplication pressures. The results were subjected to quantitative and qualitative analyses of casting nonconformities and distribution of major alloying elements. It was found that proper selection of working parameters of the casting machine, in spite of disadvantageous pouring conditions, makes it possible to reduce occurrence of some casting defects, like shrinkage cavities and porosity, to improve tightness of castings even when the alloy refining process is omitted.

Opis:
The paper, which is a summary and supplement of previous works and research, presents the results of numerical and physical modeling of the GX2CrNiMoCuN25-6-3 duplex cast steel thin-walled castings production. To obtain thin-walled castings with wall in the thinnest place even below 1 mm was used the centrifugal casting technology and gravity casting. The analyzed technology (centrifugal casting) enables making elements with high surface quality with reduced consumption of batch materials and, as a result, reducing the costs of making a unitary casting. The idea behind the production of cast steel with the use of centrifugal technology was to find a remedy for the problems associated with unsatisfactory castability of the tested alloy. The technological evaluation of the cast construction was carried out using the Nova Flow & Solid CV 4.3r8 software. Numerical simulations of crystallization and cooling were carried out for a casting without a gating system and sinkhead located in a mold in accordance with the pouring position. It was assumed that the analyzed cast will be made in the sand form with dimensions 250×250×120 mm.

Przeprowadzono badania właściwości technologicznych opracowanych w Instytucie Odlewnictwa doświadczalnych mieszanek gipsowych. Opracowano mieszanki masy ceramicznej, w których podstawowym materiałem jest gips syntetyczny. Składniki opracowanej mieszanki badano w celu określenia podstawowych właściwości technicznych i użytkowych. Wyniki badań przedstawiono na rysunkach.
Research was carried out on the technological properties of plaster mixtures developed at the Foundry Research Institute. Developed were mixtures of ceramic compounds in which the basic material was synthetic plaster. The components of the developed compound were examined in order to determine basic technical and commercial properties. The test results are presented in the figures.

Wymagania techniczne przy otrzymywaniu odlewów precyzyjnych, zmuszają producentów ceramiki do poszukiwań nowych asortymentów wyrobów, spełniających zaostrzone wymagania pod względem czystości chemicznej. Jednym z takich elementów są misy ceramiczne układów zalewowych form odlewniczych. Przedstawiono wymagania stawiane tym wyrobom oraz podstawowe własności otrzymywanych – zgodnie z opracowaną w Oddziale Materiałów Ogniotrwałych w Gliwicach technologią – mis ceramicznych. Omówiono testy, jakim poddane są wyroby u użytkownika oraz szczegółowo zbadano mikrostrukturę wyrobów przed, jak i po pracy w kontakcie z ciekłymi stopami.
Due to particular technical requirements of precise casting process the producers of ceramics are forced to search for new products which are characterized by high chemical purity. One of such elements are pouring sleeves applied in casting systems. In this paper most important requirements and basic properties of products developed in OMO are presented. Furthermore the results of trial tests as well as microstructural investigations of developed pouring sleeves were discussed.

In contemporary high-pressure die casting foundries, the mastery of each sequence in the production cycle is more and more important. In the paper, an example of virtual analysis of gearbox casting from Al alloy will be presented. It includes a large variety of parameters, as follows: choosing of appropriate foundry technology, calculation of computer simulation of casting process which takes into account the filling process of cold chamber and filling of cavity, model description of three phases in high-pressure die casting, flow of molten metal, solidification, formation of stress and deformations. Additionally, the optimization of cooling and heating systems will be compared with calculated volume defects, dimensions of castings and their deformations with experimentally obtained values.

Opis:
The paper reports the results of a physical modelling study of the production of a hypereutectic aluminium alloy to be used formaking an alloy vapour source for operation in the magnetron. Within the study, targets from a hypereutectic aluminium-silicon alloy were made in laboratory conditions. Thus obtained material was subjected to heat treatment, porosity analysis, and the assessment of the microstructure and fitness for being used in the magnetron. The process of melting the hypereutectic Al-Si alloy was carried out at the Department of Foundry of the Czestochowa University of Technology. The investigation into the production of the alloy vapour source for the synthesis of the dielectric material from the hypereutectic aluminium alloy has confirmed.

Opis:
The casting workshop was discovered with numerous artifacts, confirming the existence of the manufacturing process of metal ornaments using ceramic molds and investment casting technology in Lower Silesia (Poland) in 7-6 BC. The research has yielded significant technological information about the bronze casting field, especially the alloys that were used and the artifacts that were made from them. Based on the analyses, the model alloys were experimentally reconstructed. Taking advantage of the computer-modeling method, a geometric visualization of the bronze bracelets was performed; subsequently, we simulated pouring liquid metal in the ceramic molds and observed the alloy solidification. These steps made it possible to better understand the casting processes from the perspective of the mold technology as well as the melting and casting of alloys.

We have developed a deep neural network for casting defect detection. The approach is original because it assumes the use of data related to the casting manufacturing process, i.e. measurement signals from the casting machine, rather than data describing the finished casting, e.g. images. The defects are related to the production of car engine heads made of silumin. In the current research we focused on the detection of defects related to the leakage of the casting. The data came from production plant in Poland. The dataset was unbalanced. It included nearly 38,500 observations, of which only 4% described a leak event. The work resulted in a deep network consisting of 22 layers. We assessed the classification accuracy using a ROC curve, an AUC index and a confusion matrix. The AUC value was 0.97 and 0.949 for the learning and testing dataset, respectively. The model allowed for an ex-post analysis of the casting process. The analysis was based on Shapley values. This makes it possible not only to detect the occurrence of a defect but also to give potential reasons for the appearance of a casting leak.
