Opis:
The Catholic Youth Association in Szadek was established in 1934, after reorganisation of the Polish Youth Association, which had existed earlier. It carried out religious and social work within the framework of the Catholic Action. The patron of the Association in Szadek in 1934–1939 was the parish priest Rev. Edward Lidtke, and its church assistants were Rev. Stefan Filisiak (1934–1936) and Rev. Bernard Głoskowski (1936–1939). The Szadek troops of male and female youth together with troops in Małyń, Zygry, Zadzim and Korczew formed the Szadek section of the Sieradz branch, which was part of the Włocławek diocese Association. The aim of this organization was to bring up young people in the spirit of the Catholic faith and patriotism. The forms of such education included recollections, “social” days, congresses, conventions, sports competitions and pilgrimages. The events that Szadek youth participated in were, among others, the Eucharistic Congress of the Sieradz Region in Sieradz (1934), district rallies and sporting events (in Zduńska Wola, Sieradz and Złoczew), diocese jamborees (in Charłupia Mała and Włocławek), and a nationwide rally in Częstochowa (1938). The Catholic Association in Szadek did not resume activity after 1945.

Social teaching of subsequent popes had to be brought to life. The efforts were intensified at the beginning of the XX century when pope Pius X announced the need for development of Catholic Actions in social life. The problem was later raised by Benedict XV and especially Pius XI. In Poland, the popes’ calls faced an uneven response. At first, the actions were taken in the Archdiocese of Cracow, and later by primate August Hlond. The Catholic League, as this was the name of the organization coordinating efforts of Catholic associations, was supposed to be further developed in other dioceses. Finally, its structure was supposed to be centralized. Between 1927 and 1929, a Catholic League was organized in the Diocese of Lublin. Amongst the efforts of its bishop, Marian Leon Fulman, its actions incorporated many cleric and secular persons. The efforts were made to develop local structures, make contact with the press and the General Committee of the League. Despite the propaganda developed also in Lublin’s press, boisterously announced actions ground to a halt. The aim of the article is to describe the origin, the structure and the importance of the Catholic League in the Diocese of Lublin.

The article is an attempt to answer the question what role in political communication of the Catholic Church in Poland play the most important Polish Catholic opinion weekly magazines (Gość Niedzielny, Niedziela, Tygodnik Powszechny). Span of the analysis covers last 15 years. The research included the presidential campaign period in 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. The analysis was conducted with regard to the articles published during the period of one month prior to the presidential elections. The author assesses to what extent the analyzed press titles were convergent with the official announcements of the Polish Bishops' Conference regarding the political involvement of the Catholic Church. It is important to find an answer to the question of how the Catholic press supported one of the candidates for the office of President of the Republic. Another important question that needs clarification is whether and to what extent journalists discussed electoral programs of individual candidates. According to the author, the results of research regarding political engagement of Catholic press in the four presidential campaigns are a representative sample to determine the role of the analysed Catholic press in political communication of the Catholic Church in Poland.

Opis:
In this paper I intend to address the issue of crypto-Catholicism in the early Ottoman Balkans, a complex phenomenon which has drawn historians’ attention over the decades. More specifically, I will attempt to define and clarify the difficult and unresolved issue, taking into account the characteristics of the Balkans where many religious and social groups co-existed. That produced interaction and enmeshment between the various religions and, as a result, identities developed specific distinctive traits and often overlapped. Within that unique Balkan environment – a real confessional melting pot – crypto-Christianity naturally arose. Crypto-Catholics or Orthodoxies, living under Ottoman rule, publicly decided to embrace the Islamic religion but secretly identified themselves as Christians. I have set out to investigate this phenomenon by considering letters and reports produced by Catholic missions involved in the Balkan peninsula.

The history of the Eastern Catholic Churches has its origin in the church unions, which were concluded by some Eastern Christians with Rome in the second millennium of Christianity. Eastern Catholic Churches generally understood the extra ecclesiam nulla salus principle as it was understood at a given historical moment by the Roman Catholic Church. Eastern Christians who wanted union with Rome had to adapt to ecclesiology, which prevailed at the given moment in the Roman Catholic Church. On the other hand, these Churches want to preserve their theological specificity in the Catholic Church.

Opis:
Many devoted and well-educated Catholics begin to doubt the need for the Church. Flooded by the plethora of publications about the Church’s dark pages and scandals in the past and today they feel pain and are ashamed. On the other hand, they realize that the Church can be neither a mistake nor a lie. Undoubtedly, Catholics and Catholic theology need today an honest and serious apology of the Catholic Church that will not conceal any of her true weaknesses. This paper seeks to prove that such an apology is offered by Joseph Ratzinger (1927–2022). It is an attempt to recreate it on the basis of his entire intellectual output. His diagnosis of the Catholic Church is bitterly critical, he indicates many ecclesial problems that seem to be carried over from one generation to the next. At the same time, he provides an original apology of the Catholic Church that can surely be helpful in accepting the bipolar truth about her: God’s real presence has been so many times mediated by the disappointing Church. This article’s final part attempts to critically evaluate the effectiveness of Ratzinger’s apology from the contemporary perspective of ardent Catholics.

As culture experiences secularization, and the importance of religion and prevalence of people holding religious worldviews diminishes, the work of forming Catholics who can live out their professional and Christian vocations as teachers in different types of schools becomes simultaneously more crucial and more complex. This article explores the importance of preparing Catholic teachers for employment in contemporary educational settings in the United States to respond to accelerating secularization. It argues that the Catholic Church’s vision for education can be implemented within the limitations of US education policy, especially through the careful preparation of Catholic teachers in Catholic Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs). First, it presents the unique context of US education, illustrating the setting in which such programs function and the associated challenges. Next, it shares the Church’s vision for well-prepared Catholic educators, identifying three key anthropological conflicts linked to secularization and explaining how the Church’s teaching on Catholic education as presented by Archbishop Michael Miller’s “Five Essential Marks of Catholic Schools” provides needed guidance for EPPs located in Catholic universities. Next, it offers a case study presenting one EPP’s efforts to respond to secularization through its program redesign according to a framework that integrates Miller’s Five Marks. Finally, it explains the difficulties facing Catholic EPPs as they integrate their mission with the demands of professional preparation.

Opis:
The paper discusses the problem of transferring the memory of Jews through Polish contemporary Catholic homilies. In the biblical pericopies read throughout the liturgical year during Catholic mass, generally Jews play a negative role – as persecutors and killers of Jesus. According to the provisions of the Second Vatican Council, anti-Jewish content cannot be proclaimed in the Catholic Church, and the Bible, which according to the doctrine must remain unchanged, should be adequately commented on in homilies. The paper – on the example of about 40 homilies – shows, however, that priests who preach homilies do not use modern exegetic knowledge, but replicate stereotypes deeply rooted in culture, thus reproducing the centuries-oldmyth of the Jews as killers of God.

Opis:
The study presents selected aspects of the pastoral and writing output of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Obviously, they do not encompass or exhaust the complete range of his activity and genuine achievements during his ministry in the Greek Catholic Church. But it was not the purpose of this study to list all the accomplishments or to emphasize the general effect of the works of this outstanding hierarch of the Church. The overriding reason for bringing out Sheptytsky’s profile was the attempt to show him against the background of his epoch and its specific historical-religious circumstances, in order to draw attention to his stance as a person and Church hierarch in the context of essential historical challenges. The following issues are tackled: Sheptytsky’s impact on the shaping of organizational and spiritual matters of his Church, his initiation of the movement of renewal of the Eastern rite in the Eastern Catholic Church, his openness to cooperation and strengthening relations within the Christian communities. Last but not least, the author wished to accentuate the personal authenticity of the Metropolitan, who has not always been assessed in a reliable and objective way.

A perspective on the use of advertising tools in the Catholic Church in Poland

Opis:
Objective: The purpose of the article is to explore the use of commercial advertising by the Catholic Church in Poland to attract the faithful and build her own brand. Methodology: The use of advertising by religions provokes resistance due to skeptical attitudes toward marketing and criticism of advertising which employ ethically questionable strategies. The study applied quantitative methods, including descriptive statistics of a gender- and age-weighted sample, as well as parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. Findings: More than 55% of the respondents believe that the Church should advertise her activities. Catholic advertising should focus on charitable and social goals. Nearly half of those surveyed think that the Church advertising can help improve her image; however, opinions prevail that advertising activities undertaken by the Catholic Church will not translate into an increase in the number of believers. Value Added: The results of the research contained in the article may serve to develop new strategies for communication of the Catholic Church in Poland. Recommendations: The literature recognizes considerable gaps associated with the possibilities of using advertising in the life of religious communities. Wishing to positively mark their presence in the life of society, churches should consider the possibilities of using advertising in their activities. A theological reflection is necessary in this regard, which would support the postulates derived from the marketing approach to the issue.
