Opis:: The article analyzes the issue of an ideal city. The dynamic development of digital technologies leads us to believe that it is thanks to their use that the future cities will be created. At the beginning of the XXI century, the concept of a smart city became popular as a model of transforming the city using technologies to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. Projects of modern solutions are used more often in Asia than in Europe. Examples include cities built from scratch, but special attention should be paid to Singapore, which is at the top of many rankings. The article discusses all these issues, and the aim is to show the specificity of the functioning of a smart city on the example of Singapore.

Opis:: The purpose of the master thesis is to analyze the causes of negative incidents in Polish cities and their condition, as well as methods to change them with the use of the ideas of slow city and smart city. The essence of study is to verify the practical application of solutions leading to the improvement of the functioning of Polish cities and to identify the situation of Chrzanów - a medium-sized city, losing its social and economic functions, which has the potential of an intelligent city with good quality of life. The first chapter shows the historical conditions influencing the present shape, condition and image of Polish cities. The second chapter presents characteristic values of innovative methods of city management and solutions typical for slow and smart cities. Chapter three includes good practices used in selected Polish cities to raise the quality of life and bad practices implemented in Chrzanów city.
Celem pracy jest analiza przyczyn pojawienia się negatywnych zjawisk w polskich miastach i ich kondycji, a także metod na zmianę tego stanu rzeczy przy zastosowaniu idei slow city i smart city. Istotą pracy jest zweryfikowanie praktycznych zastosowań rozwiązań prowadzących do poprawy funkcjonowania polskich miast oraz rozpoznanie sytuacji Chrzanowa – średniego miasta, które traci swoje funkcje społeczne i gospodarcze, a które posiada potencjał do rozwoju w stylu smart i slow city. Pierwszy rozdział historyczne uwarunkowania wpływające na współczesny kształt, kondycję i wizerunek miast Polski. Drugi rozdział prezentuje wartości innowacyjnych metod zarządzania miastem i rozwiązania charakterystyczne dla miast slow i smart. Rozdział trzeci zawiera dobre praktyki wykorzystane w wybranych polskich miastach celem poprawy jakości życia oraz złe praktyki zastosowane w mieście Chrzanów.

Opis:: Purpose: The main aim of the study is to depict the characteristics of some of the most common concepts of urban reconstruction (compact city, sustainable city, smart city, as well as their hybrids), present practical aspects of the indicated urban policies and attempt to verify their implementation. Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on the presentation of selected theoretical concepts. In the empirical part, the authors use the method of case studies, presenting the effects of municipal investments and practical obstacles occurring during their implementation. They form assessments based on current media reports, articles in specialist press, as well as statements made by residents. Findings: Contemporary cities are spaces of various challenges that become sources of conflicts as well as places of unmet needs and unfulfilled ambitions. Although the decision-makers make their decisions in connection with these challenges, their interventions are not always effective. The concepts of a compact city, a smart city and a sustainable city serve as recipes for the problems of modern cities: both the short-term ones and those which require shaping a comprehensive policy for the development of cities and urban areas. However, cities are not always properly diagnosed, and local authorities often lack specialists who could consciously and skilfully propose an optimal therapy. Originality and value: The study presents an original analysis of selected case studies which relate to the shaping of the space of Polish cities. The study focuses on the challenges of shaping urban areas in relation to contemporary trends in city planning and design determined by the importance of such issues as the quality of life of residents, the quality of space, its democratisation and sustainability, the presence of art, closed circulation or the use of modern technology and creativity in the process of managing modern cities and their space.

Opis:: In this article, we present our view on the Transport System of a city as a system, consisting of four layers: aesthetic, functional, safe and smart. We define the layers and describe their relationships. Getting deeper into the system and features needed in every layer are summarized. In the following part, we will introduce some smart and safe transport solutions, applied in the city of Žilina, solutions from Finnish city of Tampere, that is one of the smartest middle-sized cities in Europe, and also few more examples from around the world. In the last part, we take a look at the futuristic plans for the transport systems, represented by autonomous driving from the safety point of view.

Opis:: Punktem wyjścia do rozważań w niniejszym artykule jest odniesienie się do sposobu kształtowania się struktur miast idealnych wraz z ich infrastrukturą, w stosunku do potrzeb ówczesnych mieszkańców. Ponadto w oparciu o podane przykłady i rozwiązania techniczne określone zostaną założenia, które później będzie można wykorzystać w procesie projektowania i planowania urbanistycznego polskich miast. Celem tej publikacji jest dostrzeżenie koniecznych zmian, jakie należałoby przeprowadzić w procesie kształtowania i funkcjonowania miasta.
The starting point for the reflections in this article is the reference to the manner of shaping the structures of ideal cities together with their infrastructure in relation to the needs of the inhabitants of a given time. Defining a smart city, by providing its important features, will help to identify significant changes that should be taken into account and made in the structure of creating, shaping and functioning of cities in Poland. Based on the reflections presented in the article, the issue of intelligent cities will be introduced. Moreover, based on the given examples and technical solutions, assumptions will be made which can later be used in the planning and urban planning process of Polish cities. The purpose of this publication is to notice the necessary changes that should be carried out in the process of shaping and functioning of the city.

Opis:: Liczba ludności w miastach na świecie rośnie o prawie 60 mln rocznie. Szacuje się, że do 2050 r. 2/3 ludności świata będzie mieszkać w miastach. Nadmierna urbanizacja i rosnąca liczba ludności w miastach stanowią poważne wyzwanie dla zarządzania miastem, a w szczególności dla logistyki miejskiej. Dziedzina ta, sprowadzająca się do koordynacji i synchronizacji przepływów na obszarach zurbanizowanych, zyskuje na znaczeniu w ujęciu strategicznym. Działania prowadzone w miastach europejskich, mające na celu usprawnienie logistyki miejskiej, postrzegane są jako element programu na rzecz inteligentnych miast (smart cities). Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie koncepcji smart city oraz jej znaczenia w kontekście logistycznego zarządzania miastem. Następnie, poprzez case study, zaprezentowanie przykładów rozwiązań z zakresu smart city stosowanych w miastach europejskich. Na bazie rozwiązań europejskich w artykule przeanalizowane zostaną możliwości czterech miast polskich w zakresie adaptowania rozwiązań smart city na swoich obszarach. Przedstawione w artykule wnioski sformułowano na podstawie dwóch faz badawczych – analityczneji syntetycznej. Pierwsza zawiera przegląd literatury oraz analizę przypadków rozwiązań smart city pochodzących z miast europejskich. Wykorzystano w niej dane z dokumentów strategicznych Komisji Europejskiej. Na podstawie obserwacji dobrych praktyk w ramach rozwiązań smart cities stosowanych w miastach europejskich przeprowadzono badania metodą wywiadów pogłębionych z zarządzającymi polskimi miastami, odnosząc się do potencjalnych rozwiązań smart city możliwych do zastosowania w czterech polskich miastach.W fazie syntetycznej badań na bazie analiz teoretycznych oraz case study wyciągnięto wnioski końcowe.
The number of urban residents is growing by nearly 60 million people every year. It is estimated that by the year 2050 2/3 of the world population will have been urban. The increasing urbanisation requires new and innovative ways to manage the complexity of urban living and to target problems of energy consumption, resource management and environmental protection. These problems are essential for city logistics. The field concerning coordination and synchronization of the flows within the urban areas is gaining strategic importance. Activities in European cities that are going to improve city logistics are included as a part for the smart city idea. Scope: At the beginning, this paper will introduce the background of the smart city concept, as well as its meaning in the logistics-related aspects of city management. Then, through the case study, it will present solutions that make European cities smart. Moreover, using the background of the significance of the concept of a smart city and its applications in the European reality, the author will analyze the possibilitiesof four Polish cities (Rzeszow, Gdansk, Cracow and Bialystok – recognised as the smartest Polish cities) for approaching the smart city concept standards in the European dimension. Methodology: The methodology of the paper is based on two dimensions: analysis and synthesis. The first phase included a thorough thematic literature review, an analysis of case studies of European and Polish smartcities. It was complemented by interviewing city board representatives of the examined Polish cities. In the synthetic phase, the study provided conclusions based on the theoretical analysis and the survey of the case study.

Opis:: The main subject of the article is Cittaslow network bringing together small and medium-sized cities (up to 50 000 inhabitants). Cittaslow is an international organization that has chosen the goal of improving the quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors from small towns. The towns focus on economic development while respecting the environment, promotion of regional products and a return to traditional craft. Activating social participation of citizens is also a crucial aspect, because Slow Cities are meant to be the strong local communities. The paper shows the main objectives of this international network, and based on research conducted from 2009 on Polish towns presents how the movement has been implemented in Poland. At the end, I try to answer whether, and if so, under what conditions it is an attractive alternative to the development of small towns in Poland.

Opis:: Representations of postcolonial African cities in contemporary literature, analysed from the perspective of postcolonial studies, allow the researcher to observe a number of phenomena: a polarization of attitudes towards the areas inhabited by literary characters, a dichotomous stratification of space, an awareness of the colonial past or deliberate actions suppressing reminiscences of colonialism, as well as the labile characteristics of the cities, with their transformations, degenerations and performativity (e.g. in the context of street names, or in the case of conceptualizing the boundaries of African countries during the Berlin Conference). These themes have been interpreted as part of a review of urban literary forms. The aim of the analysis was also to indicate the possibilities of further research on cities within postcolonial theory, which has hitherto focused rather on the issues of nativity and images of the village.
