Opis:: The article is devoted to the Polish religious printed matter from the 17th and 18th centuries (individual works and collections of texts), which shares the “clock” metaphor. The author focuses on Catholic and Arian literature, independent works and short forms, both poetry and prose. The texts analyzed are mostly pieces of advice and warnings helpful in the Christian life, centred around the Passion and funerals. The article presents the content, composition and function of these works, as well as the dual use of the clock theme in them: as an object which awakens and which measures time. The genological aspects of these works are also considered.

Opis:: A method first used to search for events leading to the changes of sizes of major US, UK, and world cities is applied to investigate the presence of events influencing incomes of commercial companies. Top 100 US companies from the period of 1955-2005 are analyzed. Distributions of incomes are found to be stable but the changes in rank positions of companies lead to discovery of some instabilities. Parameters describing changes in the rank positions are calculated, discussed, and compared to the results of previous studies.

Opis:: In these remarks, I will attempt to present the issue of clocks of time used by Aurelius Augustine and Max Weber in the presentation and evaluation of ancient Judaism. These two clocks differ in several ways. The most important differences between them are that Augustine was guided by confessional considerations and Weber by scientific ones during their construction. In the first case, the confessional approach is visible in treating Judaism as a preparation phase for the emergence and popularization of Christianity. In the second case, the development of Judaism is seen as a process that contributed to the fact that Jews became a pariah nation. Both clocks were the subject of polemics and critical commentaries. Nevertheless, it is unquestionable that measuring time might be conducted with clocks constructed differently. The most interesting are those clocks that are able to point out the important aspects of the changing reality. The more varied this reality is, and it is highly varied in the case of religious beliefs and practices, the more difficult it is to construct such clocks of time. Ancient Judaism is a good example of this fact.

Opis:: The second is currently defined by the microwave transition in cesium atoms. Optical clocks offer the prospects of stabilities and reproducibilities that exceed those of cesium. This paper reviews the progress in frequency standards based on optical transitions, recommended by International Committee for Weights and Measures, as a secondary representation of the second. The operation of these standards is briefly described and factors affecting stability and accuracy of these and some new optical clocks are discussed.

Opis:: W artykule przedstawiono charakterystykę rozwiązań sprzętowych i oprogramowania podsystemów pomiarowych przeznaczonych do monitorowania podstawowych parametrów głównego (230V AC) i rezerwowego (akumulatorowego) systemu zasilania atomowych wzorców czasu i częstotliwości oraz ich warunków środowiskowych takich jak temperatura, wilgotność i ciśnienie atmosferyczne. Podsystemy tworzą kompleksowy system monitorowania warunków pracy wzorców czasu i częstotliwości.
The paper presents the characteristics of measurement subsystems for monitoring environmental conditions and basic parameters of the main and backup power system of time and frequency atomic standards (atomic clocks). Both subsystems for monitoring power supply were implemented based on the universal USB DAQ cards with ADC converters and appropriates analog signal conditioners. Measuring current transformers (Fig.1) were used for conditioning signals (230 VAC) in the subsystem for monitoring main power supply. Resistance dividers and Hall effect sensors were applied in the subsystem (Fig.2) for monitoring DC voltage and current (in range up to 15 A) signals of backup power supply. The environmental monitoring subsystem (Fig.3) consists of instruments manufactured by LAB-EL company and allows for continuous multipoint monitoring of temperature, pressure and humidity. The software for the three subsystems (Figs. 4 and 5) was developed in an environment LabWindows/CVI, in the form of three separate modules with the possibility of communicating via network variables. Each software module carries out five basic tasks: subsystem configuration, control of measurement process, presentation of current data, presentation of historical data, detection and indication of alarm status. The subsystems or their components can be applied to other laboratories or institutions, in which there is a need for continuous monitoring of working conditions of electronic equipment.

Opis:: The issue of determinism and indeterminism became essential in the music of the second half of the 20th century. It occupied a special place in artistic output of two avant-garde composers: Iannis Xenakis and György Ligeti. In both cases, the ideas of determinism and indeterminism are connected with their music: with Pithoprakta (written by Xenakis in 1955–1956) and with Clocks and Clouds (written by Ligeti in 1972). The following article presents some aspects of their artistic approach as well as an analysis and interpretation of the compositions. Xenakis proposed his own way of thinking about indeterminism in music linked to the “stochastic music”, and Pithoprakta is the first example of this compositional technique. Meanwhile, Ligeti’s main inspiration when composing Clocks and Clouds was the essay Of Clouds and Clocks written in 1965 by Karl Popper and published in 1972 (in his book Objective Knowledge). The Austrian-British philosopher used this metaphor to describe different physical phenomena which are more or less predictable. Pithoprakta as well as Clocks and Clouds represent specific kind of music called “sound-mass music”. In both of them some distinctive textural and timbral structures may be pointed out: in the first work, they can be described as figures (“galaxy” and “beam”), and in the second one – as bands (“clocks” and “clouds”).

Opis:: In both mammals and fish, the circadian system is composed of oscillators that function at the cellular, tissue, and system levels and show the cyclic expression of clock genes. The organization and functioning of the biological clock in fish has not yet been characterized in detail, therefore, in the present study, an extensive analysis of the rhythmic expression of the main components of the biological clock in the central and peripheral organs of common carp was performed. The diurnal changes in clock gene expression were determined with respect to the subjective light cycle in fish exposed to constant light or darkness. It was found that the pattern of expression of clock, bmal, per and cry genes in carp was highest in the brain, pituitary gland, and retina. The peak clock and bmal expression was phase aligned with the lights off, whereas both per genes show similar phasing with acrophase close to light onset. The expression of cry genes varied depending on the type of tissue and the subtype of gene. The diurnal changes in the expression of clock genes demonstrates that, in particular, the expression of the clock in the retina shows endogenous oscillations independent of the influence of light. The data suggest that in carp, the time-varying expression of individual genes allows for a diverse and tissue-specific response to secure oscillations with variable phase and period.

Jest to wynikiem ogromnego zapotrzebowania na wiarygodną i dokładną informację o czasie - początkowo głównie dla potrzeb nawigacji morskiej czy zwykłej regulacji transportu publicznego i komunikacji, a w końcu w licznych zastosowaniach nawigacji satelitarnej, łączności przewodowej i bezprzewodowej, teleinformatyce, bezpieczeństwie operacji finansowych, energetyce i praktycznie w każdym obszarze funkcjonowania państwa i społeczeństwa. Przed Głównym Urzędem Miar od początku jego istnienia stało i nadal stoi zadanie wychodzenia naprzeciw tym potrzebom i dbałości o rozwój tej dziedziny.
