Geisha fever : changes in the traditional entertainment districts in Kyoto in response to excessive attention from western tourists
Autorzy:
Grela-Chen, Magdalena
Opis:
In the popular discourse, geiko districts are described as places where traditional culture is preserved in a living form. Although this statement may be considered as true, the geiko community is a part of Japanese society as a whole and does not exist in complete isolation. Being able to survive as guardians of the Japanese tradition, in the 21st century geiko are discovering new opportunities, such as using new media to promote themselves in order to protect their lifestyle. However, outside world has forced them to change the way they manage their business in the districts. By using their own Internet sites, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts to reach new customers, they display their daily routine, one in which traditional culture meets modern ideas. This paper shows the reception of usage of the Internet in traditional entertainment districts of Kyoto and the response of Western tourists to the geisha phenomenon. It appears that overwhelming attention on the part of tourist industry, as well as commercialisation, are becoming a threat to the values which have cemented relationships between customers, geiko and teahouses owners. For instance, while during the so-called "geisha hunting", tourists often try to take photographs of them at all costs. Considering the aspects of geiko life and processes mentioned above it is worth analysing how the image of the geiko is perceived by Westerners.

The following paper critically evaluates the health care system in Poland, including the market reform of the Polish healthcare system between 1999 and 2010. The article presents the process of ownership transformation, including the scale and dynamics of the introduced reform. Apart from analysing the core assumptions and aims of the long-term programme entitled „Wsparcie jednostek samorządu terytorialnego w działaniach stabilizujących system ochrony zdrowia” (Support for Local Authorities in Healthcare System Stabilization) the paper analyses proposed solutions based on the so called „health acts package” including the health care activity bill. The main aim of this paper is to critically evaluate the health care system reform in Poland, mainly focusing on the process of commercialisation of public hospitals. As a conclusion it is suggested that the introduced reform does not solve the most important problems of the Polish healthcare system in a comprehensive and suffi cient manner.

Opis:
Technological advances in medicine have given the sick and the disabled a chance of making a full recovery. However, contemporary trends show that medicine goes far beyond its restorative functions. The increasing popularity of plastic surgery raises many questions. Is medicine beginning a new era of its development as a response to the commercialisation of the human body? Does not correcting nature lead to people’s segregation into the better and the worse ones? The development of medical technologies has accelerated the commercialisation of the body by treating it as a package that one can “redecorate” to be more attractive in the market of social relations. Plastic surgery is trying to solve the identity crisis and psychological problems of people. New forms of medicalisation are emerging. A lack of success is seen as a symptom of a disease that can be cured with a scalpel. Plastic surgery can be a tool of reconstruction of one’s identity but only under strict circumstances (genetic defects, bodily injuries). By posturing as a solution to people’s psychological and sociological problems, medicine must reckon with a moral/ethical critique.

Opis:
Literature suggests that there are high levels of commercialisation by even the poorest and smallest landholders within the horticulture subsector in most rural Africa. Thus, the notion of poor commercialisation among smallholder farmers is now being challenged. Against this background, this paper estimated factors that influence commercialisation by smallholder cabbage farmers in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study used a cross-sectional survey of120 smallholder cabbage farmers obtained through a multistage sampling procedure. A Cragg double-hurdle model was applied to analyse the factors that influence the commercialisation decision and intensity of commercialisation. In the first stage, the result of the probit regression model revealed that gender, age, access to informal credit and area planted were significant factors towards influencing smallholder cabbage farmers’ commercialisation decisions. In the second stage, the results of the truncated regression model revealed that family size and area planted were the key factors determining the intensity of commercialisation. Hence, the attempts to improve smallholder farmers’ cabbage commercialisation should be guided by these significant explanatory variables in the study area, given the low commercialisation index revealed.

The article discusses the consequences of the imminent implementation of the so-called re-use directive in Polish museums. Following the amendment in 2013, this directive extended the duty of sharing the broadly-defined public information which is gathered in these institutions, i.e. all content irrespective of its medium, to museums, libraries and archives (the so-called LAM sector).
Artykuł wprowadza do problematyki dotyczącej konsekwencji, jakie poniosą muzea w wyniku rychłego wdrożenia w Polsce tzw. dyrektywy re-use.

Opis:
Though Nigeria possesses one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, it is unfortunate that we are still one of the major gas flaring nations in the world. Besides the grave environmental consequences of gas flaring, it is still an unwise practice considering the impeding global energy crisis within the next 50 years. In this paper, the potentials of natural gas as an untapped reserve of wealth and socio-economic power is discussed. The potential of the Nigerian gas sub-sector can be fully harnessed if the mechanisms of commercialisation in line with the gas master plan is put in motion. The completion of a comprehensive gas pipeline network and the promotion of direct foreign investment is a good means of achieving the commercialisation initiative. About $3.5bn worth of investments is coming into the country to achieve the gas flare commercialisation targets by 2020. The commercialisation programme seeks to provide a framework to eliminate gas flaring which when fully implemented would actualise potential for immense wealth laden in Nation’s gas reserves.

In search of new destinations and experiences, tourists are now visiting places that are monuments of tragedy, suffering, death and destruction. These places are often connected to mass murders or catastrophes. Such locations have always attracted interest, fascination and evoked dread. This phenomenon has been described as “dark tourism” or thanatourism. The aim of the article is to discuss the subject of thanatourism in the urban space of Berlin, which is becoming an increasingly popular branch of cultural tourism in Germany and other countries. The article consists of three main parts: a theoretical introduction, a description of thanatourism resources in Berlin and the analysis of the phenomenon in reference to selected aspects.

Knowledge commercialisation and the focus on economic and parametric evaluation of universities have been evoking heated debates in academic circles. However, the transition of the tertiary education system from the Humboldtian model to an entrepreneurial one that would incorporate both the financial aspect and the widely understood social dimension might become a catalyst for promoting sustainable development of the country and society. In this context, the social responsibility of the university is worth deeper reconsideration. It is the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) along with the local community that shoulder the responsibility for creating a unique response to the present challenges in order to suit best the needs of all the stakeholders.
