Opis:
This book focuses on improving community organizing through interpersonal skills and basic social work concepts, including cultural competency, engagement, dialog, empowerment, and group process. The use of these skills could lead to better engagement with volunteers, better collaboration with diverse local organizations and groups, facilitation of task and coalition groups, and lobbying for legislation. The central thesis of the book is that these skills are essential not only to social work methods but also to community development. The book will be useful to students by referencing the Council of Social Work Education’s Education Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS), the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics, and the International Federation of Social Workers’ statement of ethical principles.

Opis:
This article aims to present social work as a practice protecting the rights of people suffering from the processes of marginalisation. It takes as its point of departure two models of advocacy structuring multiple types of activity in this field, ranging from work with particular individuals to political engagement at the macro level. The next part offers a discussion of the results of a quantitative study (CAWI and CATI interviews) conducted among social workers from local social welfare centres in the Wielkopolska region. In the light of analysis of the obtained data, the practice of advocacy in social work emerges as one focused on providing direct assistance in the form of financial and non-financial benefits. The declared level of acceptance to facilitating collective action and macro practice of social work was lower. The results also reveal the attitudes of social workers to social rights and social problems.

Opis:
Abstract The article aims to introduce the community school as one of the possible models for the predicted development of schooling in today's knowledge society. Contrasting with its applications in the UK and US, the paper showcases current developments in the community school concept in the Czech Republic, reflecting on the position of the community school in contemporary specialist discourse. There is an overview of select research into community schools, the types of community schools in the UK, US and the Czech Republic (where the concept has only been applied since the 1990s in its present form), complemented by an analysis of the community school concept as a whole with particular attention paid to its internal coherence and diversity. Community school standards are outlined to provide additional background. The methodology of the article is grounded in the theoretical analysis of specialist literature, relevant projects, and other sources.

El concepto de la comunidad de práctica en el contexto de un grupo determinado de hablantes de a Fala de Xálima
The concept of community of practice in the context of a selected group of speakers of a Fala de Xálima

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to study the current sociolinguistic situation of the language community of Xálima through the prism of the theory of community of practice. We define the community of practice as an aggregate of people who come together around mutual engagement in an endeavour of preserving and promoting their vernacular language. The empirical material will be a series of anthropological observations and comments on the semi-directed interviews, made in situ by the authors, in which we will analyse the efforts towards the orthographic standardization and their possible effects. We aim to demonstrate that the methodological principle of community of practice is applicable and suitable to shed new light over sociolinguistic minorized contexts, especially when conducting research in the field of the so-called third wave of sociolinguistics.

Opis:
W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę rozróżnienia powyższych terminów w wymiarze poznawczym i strukturalnym.
In the last few years, the social perspective has become the dominant paradigm in knowledge management studies. Despite the existence of concise theoretical constructs that enable us to identify the concepts of knowledge communities, communities of practice and knowledge networks, there is a lot of definitional misinterpretation in KM-literature and in practice. The aim of this paper is to clear the relevant terminology in epistemological and structural dimension.

Opis:
The present paper addresses the question whether in light of its security policy Germany is still to be considered an integral part of the NATO community. Furthermore, this essay analyzes which implications the German NATO policy will have on future transatlantic cooperation within the alliance. To this end, the experiences made in the surroundings of the international military mission in Libya will be exemplified and drawn upon. Serving as the article’s theoretical background, the so called “Communities of Practice” approach permits to establish to what extent Germany is to be characterized as a member or a non-member of the transatlantic alliance. In this context, NATO is perceived as a community of practice, within which common discursive principles are being developed and joint actions are being executed by its members. In the course of this study, primarily Germany’s and NATO’s reasoning concerning Libya will be compared by conducting a discourse analysis. Subsequently, all concrete actions which have been taken by the entities in question will be contrasted with each other. Consequently, a light will be shone on the manifest differences between Germany and NATO with regard to both the discourse and their respective practical politics. Against the background of the Libyan case, Germany can no longer be considered a part of NATO as a community of practice which can in turn be taken as evidence for a tendency towards less dedication to multilateralism and less commitment in the field of military missions on the part of Germany. Thus, within the relation between NATO and Germany, a lacking sense of community can clearly be detected which potentially poses a threat to any future transatlantic cooperation.

"Experto crede" : patient knowledge formation in health communities on Facebook
Autorzy:
Szczyrbak, Magdalena
Opis:
The article explains the processes involved in knowledge sharing and support giving in an open FB forum dedicated to endometriosis. It builds on the existing understanding of experiential knowledge, as well as adopts Jovchelovitch’s (2007) perspective on knowledge diversity and representation which views knowledge construction as an intersubjective process. The analysis looks at the what, the who, and the how of the community in question, focusing in particular on three areas: identity work (self- and other-categorisation); perspective sharing and recognition by “significant others”; and epistemic self-other positioning. The analysis determines the most common strategies of categorisation, identifies ways of constructing shared understanding, as well as reveals that the participants’ personal truths are based primarily on their embodied experience and hearsay.

Opis:
The article presents results from a research on the relevance and challenges of collaboration for the long-term sustainability of rural community enterprises. The study relies on Communities of Practice and Degrowth theories. Methods include semi-standardised interviews and focused ethnography in two community enterprises in rural areas in Germany and Portugal. Main results confirm the relevance of collaborative relations with residents, public sector, peer organisations and within the teams for both stability and transformative power of the organisations’ work. Respectful handling of privileges and balance in participation and professionalisation support sustainability, whereas institutional stagnation and involuntary degrowth may risk it.

Who defines-who decides? : theorising the epistemic communities, communities of practice and interest groups in the healthcare field : a discursive approach
Autorzy:

Polak, Paulina
Opis:
The aim of the paper is to propose a rethinking of the concept of epistemic communities in terms of their application in the discursive analysis of the field of healthcare. In the first part of the article, authors describe healthcare in the light of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, and then the knowledge-power relations are presented in the discourses in the field. It serves to propose a relational approach to the various discursive actions generated by the three groups-epistemic communities, communities of practice and interest groups which are distinguished analytically from each other. Authors conclude by illustrating a possible way of operationalization of the proposed categories using the examples of discursive actions in the healthcare field in Poland.

Opis:
Successfully joining a new workplace community is demanding, especially when this involves crossing national boundaries in addition to team boundaries. For outsiders, humour is an area that arguably presents a challenge to full participation, particularly when local understandings are not shared, nor even recognized as distinctive. Newcomers face the challenge of navigating the trajectory from legitimate peripheral member towards core status (adopting the terms of the Community of Practice model). This involves cooperating with others in interaction, including engaging with humour and laughter as a way of indicating belonging. Here belonging is operationalized using the two dimensions proposed by Antonsich (2010), namely (1) a sense of belonging and (2) the politics of belonging as evidenced through negotiation with others. Applying an Interactional Sociolinguistic approach, I offer analysis of naturally occurring workplace interactions and reflections from skilled migrant interns in New Zealand workplaces. I discuss the place of laughter in attempts to demonstrate team membership, arguing that these attempts at belonging require the cooperation and endorsement of insiders. The findings indicate that, however benevolently intentioned, the local colleagues’ use of humour, and their reactions to the humour and laughter produced by the skilled migrant interns, often results in a sense of othering and exclusion. This is keenly felt by the interns who note the difficulties that taken for granted practices create in their acceptance and progress. In many cases the result is laughing along, as an outward signal of fit, rather than laughing with which suggests a deeper sense of belonging.
