Opis:
A river is a water ecosystem that plays an important role in the hydrological cycle and functions as a catchment area for the surrounding area. One of the organisms inhabiting river waters is plankton. The purpose of this study was to determine and analyze the structure of the plankton community in the waters of the Cijulang River and to study the relationship between plankton abundance, as well as some physical-chemical parameters of the water. The study was conducted in January, February, and March 2018 on the Cijulang River, at 5 (five) stations with a purposive sampling method. Accordingly, 17 genera were found, from 7 phytoplankton classes consisting of 6 Bacillariophyceae genera, 1 Clorophyceae genera, 2 Cyanophyceae genera, 3 Zygnematophyceae genera, 2 Desmidiaceae genera, 1 Synurophyceae genera, and 2 Fragillariophyceae genera. Also found were 10 genera from 5 classes of zooplankton consisting of 4 genera Maxillopoda, 2 genera Branchiopoda, 1 genera Gastropoda on veliger fase, 1 genera Ostracoda, and 2 genera Copepoda. The abundance of phytoplankton obtained ranges from 11-57 cells / L, while the zooplankton ranges from 8 – 40 ind/L. The diversity index (H ') = 1.397 - 2.275 and dominance index (D) = 0.022 - 0.294. Physical-chemical parameters of the waters, respectively, were 22 °C - 31 °C, light intensity 47.5 cm - 254 cm, salinity 0 ppt - 20 ppt, and dissolved oxygen 6.2 mg / L - 13.4 mg / L. Ammonia concentration 0.03 - 0.08 mg / L. All stations had a phosphate value of less than 0.16 mg / L and a silicate concentration of 0.01 - 0.0581 mg / L.

Opis:
Comparisons between the carabid communities of natural and drained fens in the Biebrza Valley (NE Poland) were made on the basis of trapped material. Fen drainage appears to result in a restructuring of species composition as there is only a limited (20-40%) similarity between the communities in natural and drained areas. The lowest species diversity was noted for a drained meadow on alder peat. Agonum moestum was dominant on natural fens, and in the one not cultivated and periodically flooded site on drained fens and Carabus granulatus or Pterostichus nigrita on drained ones. Trophic structure also differed, with hemizoophages of the genera Amara and Harpalus associated with agrocoenoses being present on drained fens but absent from natural ones. Chlaenius costulatus, a species now rare in Poland, is typical of peatlands, but was not present on drained sites. The number of sites accesible for it have declined as a result of wetland drainage.

Opis:
One of the dramatic effects of global warming is the retreat of glaciers. This phenomenon has intensified in the last two decades. Postglacial areas are quickly colonised by various groups of organisms. Auto- and heterotrophic microorganisms play an especially vital role in these processes. They thrive in shallow glacial lagoons which often form in front of retreating glaciers. These reservoirs are characterised by high dynamics of physicochemical parameters, including: salinity, temperature and concentrations of organic compounds and nutrients. The conducted microbiological studies have revealed rich structural and functional diversity of bacteria occurring in the ecosystem of Ecology Lagoon situated on King George Island. Bacteria found on the surface of algae and stones in the shore zone of the lagoon showed particularly intense metabolic activity. A molecular analysis has indicated that unique taxonomic groups of bacteria occur in the ecosystem of Ecology Lagoon.

Opis:
One of the important ways to prevent permanent environmental pollution is to constantly monitor its quality, which can be performed in several ways. The present bioindication study analyzed the level of diversity and abundance of biofilm microorganism communities, which illustrate the state of the studied aquatic environment, enabling to determine its quality. The impact of stormwater discharge on the receiver at particular points was evaluated on the basis of the reaction of selected microorganisms or their groups to the substances appearing in the watercourse. The study of indicator organisms gives information about the waters of a given body of water without expensive hydrochemical tests and without causing a burden on the environment during the production as well as disposal of reagents that are consumed in many classical physicochemical analyses. On the basis of selected algal species, the Shannon index and McArthur index were calculated, and the effect of storm sewer discharge on the communities of indicator organisms was determined. The best visible impact of storm sewer discharge was seen on the basis of the entire study cycle in relation to the median of the McArthur index.

Badger (Meles meles) disturbances affect oribatid mite (Acari : Oribatida) communities in European temperate forests

Opis:
Burrowing mammals living in forests are one of the important disturbance factors driving changes in species community and diversity on the forest floor. In the present study we examined the impact of soil mounds created by badgers (Meles meles) on species richness and the community structure of oribatid mites, which constitute one of the most numerous components of soil mesofauna. We compare oribatid communities between forest soils disturbed by badgers in 1-year-old mounds and 5-year-old mounds as well as undisturbed forest soil to get an insight into the direction of temporal changes. The study plots were situated in pine forests within the Kampinos Forest (Poland). The soil parameters created by badgers and ecological groups in the oribatid fauna were analysed. The results showed that distinct oribatid communities occur in badger mounds when compared with adjacent undisturbed forest soil. It appeared that badgers have the potential to substantially affect the soil environment in forest ecosystems and finally influenced mite abundance and community composition. Initial badger disturbance caused a significant decline in the abundance and biodiversity of oribatid mites, but within a few years the oribatid fauna was restored. Our results supported the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. Badger activity affected the composition of ecological groups of mites, toward surface dwelling, primary decomposers and sexually reproducing species. It can be concluded that badger mounds serve as microhabitats for some soil mites and contribute to the patchiness and heterogeneity of the forest floor. Finally, oribatid community structure proved to be a good indicator of soil disturbance caused by mammal activities involving deep digging in soil and heaping mounds in temperate forests.

Opis:
This research was conducted in Mempawah Mangrove Park, West Kalimantan on July – August 2018. The research aims to map the benthic macrofauna community structure and its relationship with the structure of mangrove vegetation. The research method was a survey and use purposive sampling data method in observation stations based on different stages of mangrove vegetation. The observation stations consists of Avicennia marina and Rhizophora stylosa as the species of mangroves. Station 1 consists of mangroves in seedling size, station 2 consists of mangroves in pole size, and station 3 consists of mangrove trees. The benthic macrofauna consist of 8 species from 3 different classes, merostomata, malacostraca, and gastropods. The highest abundance value (155 ind/m2), diversity index (1,875) and similarity index (0,668) is in station 2. The relationship between benthic macrofauna abundance and mangrove density has -0,356 as the correlation coefficient which indicates that an increase of benthic macrofauna abundance is in line with the decrease of mangrove density. High density value in research shows that the mangrove is in seedling size, and vice versa a low density value indicates the mangrove trees. The coefficient of determination (0,1272) indicating that the abundance of benthic macrofauna is affected by the mangrove density as 12,72% and 87,28% affected by other factors.
