Opis:
Investigation on fuelling a dual-fuel compression ignition engine with various fuels, that are unconventional for this type of engine, was carried out for many years in the Department of Internal Combustion Engines and Automobiles in Technical University of Radom. Such fuels as methanol, ethanol and natural gas were applied in the investigation. Recently, the investigation regards application of LPG - a fuel that is very popular in Poland. Within the project No. 4T12D02226 of the Committee of Scientific Research, it was tested, among others, an engine equipped with injection system for diesel fuel pilot dose - a common rail type. As a result of the former investigation, load characteristics of specific energy consumption as well as CO, CO2, nox, HC and smoke emissions data were obtained [1]. In order to analyze variability of fundamental combustion process parameters, histories of the pressure inside combustion chamber have been registered during investigation. Investigation on changes of these parameters in the described engine version is particularly important due to possibility of knocking combustion occurrence that leads to the failure of such engine parts as piston or valves. Changes of these parameters versus engine load for various injection timing of diesel fuel pilot dose were analysed.

Opis:
In this research work the influence of an inert catalyst on toxic emission from a self-ignition engine has been investigated. In particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pahs) emissions, which are known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, have been studied. The experimental results show that implementation of catalytic coating on chosen elements of diesel engine causes decrease in pahs concentration, what is connected with toxicity decrease in exhaust gases. The inert catalyst application (active coating on research engine glow plugs) is very advantageous for decrease of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pahs) concentration in engine exhaust gases, especially on idle running. The applied modification of engine combustion space causes significant decrease of exhaust toxicity. Because of high effectiveness in pahs concentration and toxicity decrease it is recommended to continue the researches and extend them by various physical-chemical modifications of catalytic layers. The paper research work stand containing engine test house, engine with a break, fuel reservoir, NO, CO and smoke level analyzers, filter, tube with active coal, exhaust gases uptake system and engine control system. The pahs concentration marked in idle running diesel engine in two states of engine work, pahs concentration marked in diesel engine and the total pahs concentration in engine exhaust gases and pahs toxicity in engine exhaust gases for two engine loads are presented in the paper.

Opis:
The research aimed at analysing the influence of the diesel oil temperature on the NOx emission level. The tests were carried out on a test stand equipped with a 9.5 kW multi-fuel compression-ignition engine. The setup constitutes an experimental cogeneration unit discharging the produced energy into the power grid. The measurements were carried out under the D1 test procedure provided by ISO 8178–4 for testing engines operating at a constant speed. As a result of statistical analysis of the results obtained, significant differences were found in the u specific values of the nitrogen oxides emission gained for particular phases of D1 tests, when the engine was fed with diesel fuel of different temperatures. The results obtained confirmed the possibility of limiting the specific emission of NOx only when the engine is running at 75% of its nominal torque. An increase in the NOx emissions was recorded for the remaining loads.

Opis:
The volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are significant group o air pollution emitted during fuel combustion in diesel engines. This research work is continuation of research where the influence of an inert catalyst on toxic emission from a self-ignition engine has been investigated. In particular volatile organic compounds VOC's emissions which are known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, have been studied. The experimental results show that implementation of catalytic coating on chosen elements of diesel engine causes change of percentage participation of particular compounds in their sum and decrease of their concentration. The analysis of chosen compounds (benzene and formaldehyde) shows that the modification which was proposed causes increase of concentration of those substances when engine works in specific conditions, what is connected with change of engine exhaust toxicity and decrease in PAHs concentration, what is connected with toxicity decrease in exhaust gases. In particularly research work stand, the comparison of total VOC's concentration with and without catalytic coating, the comparison of benzene concentration, the comparison of formaldehyde concentration, the comparison of toxicity level with and without catalytic coating are presented in the paper.

Opis:
The main problem in conventional diesel engines and HCCI diesel is reduction of solid particles emitted to atmosphere. applying of particle filters requires special methods for their regeneration after some period of the engine work in a result of closing of substrate pores by soot. These methods require additional energy for combustion of soot (additional fuel or electric energy). The new method takes into account a self-regeneration of diesel particle filter by use of special heat recovery system. The paper shows an example of DPF self-regeneration. the exhaust temperature behind the turbine and catalytic converter is very low and particularly for HCCI engine the emission of particles is low in comparison to conventional diesel engines. for that case an additional energy is required for increase of gas temperature before DPF. the preliminary studies show a possibility of using the special design of DPF with heat recovery system. the paper shows the simulation results of such system and possibility of increasing the heat recovery ratio by change of geometry of DPF. the gas heat exchange formulas between dpf and the heat exchange module are partly included in the paper. the preliminary results of calculations shows the possibility of increase of exhaust gases in front of DPF about 20%, which enables a continuous regeneration of DPF. the work is carried out as part of the european project ipsy.

Opis:
The need to increase the share of renewable fuels in the general energy balance necessitates the search for new possibilities of their use. One such fuel is biogas, which is generated both as a result of natural processes occurring, e.g. in landfills, and can also be obtained from various biological materials in biogas plants. Because of its properties, biogas may be used to power spark-ignition engines. At the same time, in numerous scientific centres attempts are underway at using biogas to power compression-ignition engines. Due to the relatively high autoignition temperature of methane, which is the main component of biogas, it is necessary to use dual-fuel supply systems in CI engines. Providing fuel gas to such an engine in the form of biogas, which can have a varying chemical composition, considerably changes the conditions of combustion in the engine compartment, which affects both the performance of the engine as well as the emission of toxic compounds into the atmosphere. The present paper discusses the impact of supplying an engine with fuel gas, as well as of the composition of biogas, on the ratios describing the load in the combustion chamber of a dual-fuel compression-ignition engine. The calculations were conducted for a four-cylinder forced induction engine, assuming that the volume of the drawn gas and air mixture equals the volume of the drawn air during mono-fuel operation.

Opis:
The article presents experimental research that has been carried out on a marine, 4-stroke, 3-cylinder, turbocharged engine. During testing, the engine operated at a constant rotational speed of 750 rpm and a load from 0 kW to 280 kW. The engine was fuelled by diesel oil of known specification and loaded by electric generator with water resistance. The fuel consumption was measured during the engine operation with fuel nozzles with different geometries. The measurement of the fuel consumption was carried out using a weighing system that was designed, constructed, and manufactured by the “KAIZEN” scientific research team at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Gdynia Maritime University. The results of measurements show changes in the fuel consumption by the engine with the geometry of the injected fuel spray. The research facility is Sulzer’s 3- cylinder, 4-stroke, turbocharged AL25/30 piston engine. The fuel system consists of Bosch injection pumps controlled by a rotation speed regulator. Fuel injectors are centrally located in the cylinder heads of the engine.

Opis:
Biogas is among the fuels whose significance in the general energy balance will increase. These results from the fact that it may be produced from various kinds of waste materials, and it is therefore considered a renewable fuel of the second generation. Because of its properties, biogas may be used directly to power spark-ignition engines. Nonetheless, numerous tests are underway involving the possibility of using biogas to power compression-ignition engines. In order to use biogas, whose main combustible component is methane, in compression-ignition engines, it is necessary to use a dual fuel power supply system. With such a system supplying power to the engine, the gas and air mixture in the cylinder is ignited by a small dose of liquid fuel. This paper presents a fragment of the research on the use of biogas with a varying chemical composition for powering compression-ignition engines. The described tests were conducted using a one-cylinder compressionignition engine mounted on an engine test stand. The fuel gas consisted of a mixture of natural gas and carbon dioxide; the share of each individual component was regulated from the station, which controlled the operation of the whole test stand. The developed control system also enabled the adjustment of the operating parameters of the engine test stand and the parameters of the injection of liquid fuel, such as the injection pressure, the timing angle of injection and the size of the dose. The results presented in the paper show the impact of the individual control parameters of the engine on the value of the engine’s torque and the amount of toxic compounds in the exhaust fumes.
