Opis:: Dispute and controversy are parts of our culture and cannot be omitted on the Internet (where it becomes more anonymous). There have been many studies on controversy, especially on social networks such as Wikipedia. This free on-line encyclopedia has become a very popular data source among many researchers studying behavior or natural language processing. This paper presents using the category structure of Wikipedia to determine the controversy of a single article. This is the first part of the proposed system for classification of topic controversy score for any given text.

Management of controversial projects in culture

Opis:: Celem niniejszej pracy jest poznanie wyzwań pojawiających się w zarządzaniu projektami kulturalnymi, które z różnych powodów uznane są za kontrowersyjne. W badaniach, które przeprowadziłam skupiłam się na dwóch podmiotach: instytucjach oraz odbiorcach kultury, mających styczności ze sztuką budzącą sprzeciw. Część teoretyczna prezentuje pojęcia, których znajomość jest niezbędna do zapoznania się z problemem badawczym, są to definicje, takie jak: kontrowersja w sztuce, zarządzanie projektem kulturalnym oraz teoria interesariuszy. Zjawiska te przeanalizowane zostały na przykładach: spektaklu „Golgota Picnic” R. Garcii, rzeźbie-instalacji „Piramida zwierząt” K. Kozyry oraz wydarzeniu „Lata ‘90te w erotyce i muzyce (18+)”. Projekty te wywołały kontrowersje, a ich organizatorzy zmuszeni byli podjąć różne działania. Reakcje oraz refleksje nad zarządzaniem takimi projektami zostały omówione w ramach badań. Dopełnieniem jest obraz odbiorców sztuki oraz opracowanie specyfiki dzieł kontrowersyjnych. Praca oparta jest na nowatorskim zamyśle metodologicznym, odwołującym się do założeń badań jakościowych w naukach o zarządzaniu, wykazując zarazem duże znaczenie praktyczne.
The aim of this study is to investigate the activities of the management studies on the example of controversial projects in the cultural sphere, also to look at the status of these projects. In my research I focused on two subjects, namely the institutions and recipients of culture, in the context of their contact with the objectionable art. The theoretical part presents the concepts, which are essential to understand the research question, i.e. controversy in art, project management, stakeholder theory. These occurrences have been analyzed on three selected examples: the play "Golgotha Picnic" by Rodrigo Garcia, sculptural installation "Pyramid of animals" created by Katarzyna Kozyra, and the event “Lata ‘90te w erotyce i muzyce (18+)”. The actions, that had to be taken by organizers served me as a basis to analyze the condition of controversial cultural projects. The research participants have been asked about issues related to the characteristics of controversial cultural project. The work is based on an innovative methodological design, referring to the assumptions of the qualitative research in management sciences, in addition showing great practical importance.

Opis:: The Chinese Rites Controversy definitively shaped the history of Christianity in China. When some missionaries were exiled in Canton from 1666 to 1671, they sought to resolve their disagreement on whether certain Confucian rituals could be practiced by Chinese Christian converts but their differences ended up even more entrenched. In his unpublished history of the China mission covering the period from 1640 to 1700, the Polish Jesuit Tomasz Ignacy Szpot Dunin (1644-1713) gives an account of the discussions held in Canton. His account not only reveals previously known materials but also offers new insights on the Controversy.

Benettons advertising campaigns and religious controversy

Opis:: The aim of this paper was to show the religious controversies, which could be perceived as acts of transgression, on the example of Benetton’s advertising campaigns. Benneton, as a wordly known company, was chosen due to the fact, that a lot of advertisements produced in the past, could be seen as controversial or at least evoking discussion by specific groups of society. For this thesis, the images from late 20th century have been chosen. The author focused on showing various definitions of transgressive acts, to later on assess, if specific advertisements meet the criteria of transgression. She decided to focus on images, that are closely connected to christianity, although there was some part to discuss the racial aspect of Benetton advertising. Religious controversies are the ones, that provoke most heated discussions in the society and are not only the matter of individual expression of an artist, but are also punished by law in certain countries. If the art should always be connected with crossing the borders, provoking scandal or, on the other hand, ought to limit itself to esthetical aspect, can be a matter of discussion. There are some interesting phenomenons, like „wear-out” effect, that would be worth further exploring, especially if we would like to avoid treating viewers as one society and focus more on specific groups of people. Although the author did not focus on the law or ethical aspects of the images shown, she tried to show different perspectives on how those images can affect viewers thinking.

Opis:: This article is devoted to the school reform of December 2016. The author discusses its appropriateness, the way it is introduced, and the social climate that accompanies it. This reform re-introduces the state from before 1998, i.e. an 8-year-long primary school and eliminates the junior school. The author raises a question about the justification for the reform, assuming that it does not take into account the results of the study on the effects of the 1999 reform, but may be politically-motivated. Another thesis concerns the repetition of the application errors of the previous reform as well as the formal way of introducing changes into the school system, especially the school network. The author points to a great social resistance against the reform, especially the way it is conducted and predicts that due to the hasty implementation of the reform and application errors, its effects may be half-hearted.

Opis:: Purpose – The study aims to determine whether a relationship exists between the potential significance of corporate controversies for stakeholders and how organisations respond to them in their annual and sustainability reports. Design/methodology/approach – This paper employs content analysis on annual and sustainability reports of 48 listed companies from the Refinitiv database. The logit regression was used to estimate the model. Findings – The study revealed that the main factors increasing the probability of a controversial issue being addressed in a corporate report are the controversy’s potential significance, companies’ financial performance and lawsuits. Research limitations/implications – Our study has three major limitations. These are a relatively small sample of companies and reports, focusing on disclosures made in corporate reports and omitting other channels of communication, for example, social media, and a certain amount of subjectivity in the process of coding information. Social implications – Former studies show that corporations face a serious risk of their hypocritical strategies becoming too evident for stakeholder groups. Our findings suggest that the risk is already materialising and may undermine the idea of CSR and sustainability reporting. Originality/value – Our research focuses on high-profile adverse incidents widely reported in the media, the omission of which from corporate reports seems to constitute a particular case of organised hypocrite. It also demonstrates that companies use an impression management strategy to defuse adverse publicity and that major controversies cause minor ones to be omitted from their reports.

Opis:: W artykule zadano pytanie, jakie problemy społeczne generuje społeczno-technologiczna hybrydalność smogu oraz jakie charakterystyki (przyczyny i przedmiot) mają kontrowersje wokół smogu w perspektywie aktorów publicznych i biznesowych. Kluczowa nie okazuje się problematyczność smogu jako takiego, ale ta, którą generuje angażowana materialność – technologia oraz interesy aktorów i ich funkcjonowanie w ramach różnych systemów wiedzy. Generowanie, udostępnianie i jakość danych na temat czystości powietrza oraz wykorzystywane technologie pomiarowe są przedmiotami kontrowersji społecznych wokół smogu. Analizowane kontrowersje dotyczą następujących obszarów: wiarygodności dostarczanych danych, jakości i obecności infrastruktury pomiarowej, pozycji na rynku informacji o zanieczyszczeniach powietrza oraz różnic w ontologiach i kompetencjach na linii laicy–eksperci. Badanie własne przeprowadzono metodą mapowania kontrowersji na podstawie danych zastanych.
This paper attempts to answer the question of what social problems the socio-technological hybridity of smog generates and what characteristics (causes and subject matter) the smog controversy acquire from the perspective of public and business actors. Smog is treated as a hybrid of knowledge and influence that is socially redefined in the form of controversy. Crucial is not the problematic nature of smog per se, but that which is generated by the involved materiality – technology and the interests of actors and their functioning within different knowledge systems. The generating, sharing and quality of air quality data as well as used measurement technologies are the subjects of public controversy over smog. The studied controversies can be found in the following areas: reliability of the provided data, quality and presence of measurement infrastructure, position in the market for air pollution information and differences in ontologies and competencies between laypeople and experts. This study was conducted using a controversy mapping method based on the desk research.
