Opis:
Despite high similarity of canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV), bovine coronavirus, (BCoV) and human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43), these viruses differ in species specificity. For years it was believed that they share receptor specificity, utilizing sialic acids for cell surface attachment, internalization, and entry. Interestingly, careful literature analysis shows that viruses indeed bind to the cell surface via sialic acids, but there is no solid data that these moieties mediate virus entry. In our study, using a number of techniques, we showed that all three viruses are indeed able to bind to sialic acids to a different extent, but these molecules render the cells permissive only for the clinical strain of HCoV-OC43, while for others they serve only as attachment receptors. CRCoV and BCoV appear to employ human leukocyte antigen class I (HLA-1) as the entry receptor. Furthermore, we identified heparan sulfate as an alternative attachment factor, but this may be related to the cell culture adaptation, as in ex vivo conditions, it does not seem to play a significant role. Summarizing, we delineated early events during CRCoV, BCoV, and HCoV-OC43 entry and systematically studied the attachment and entry receptor utilized by these viruses.

Opis:
The phobia Corona is spreading dynamically all over the world. The question is what we can do to stop this pandemic and what price we will have to pay for it. This opinion piece of ASEJ editorial team member Prof. Medani P. Bhandari addresses the really important issue that surrounds us today - the fear of infecting myself and my loved ones. Responsibility for the people we are in contact should be the key element. The overwhelming amount of information in the media, contributes to the deepening of fear about which the article deals. People need to be aware not only of the responsibility for the lives of others, they must also re-evaluate their own lives in such a way that money, power and material goods cease to occupy a higher priority than the supreme value of love and care for others. Currently, the world is slowing down and people are noticing their powerlessness in the face of nature. It can be assumed that Covid is one of the lessons that God is teaching us to protect us from ourselves.

Opis:
Scientific objective: The draft is dedicated to reconstruction of the media narratives of coronavirus skeptics. The text presents the basic plot threads of the story about the plandemic, as well as the factors determining its dramatic dimension. The research method used in the text includes narrative analysis as a discourse subtype. Research material consists of 116 texts, mostly journalistic ones, published on the Internet. Conclusions: 1. Coronavirus skeptics perceive the pandemic situation in Poland and all over the world in terms of a conflict. 2. The roles of the main characters in the plandemic story are permanently assigned and constant. 3. All epidemic events are being incorporated to the pre-adopted script based on historical analogies. This is a result of cognitive processes based on limited rationality. 4. The narrator places himself among the freedom fighters, perceiving his antagonists as dangerous oppressors. Originality and cognitive value: The paper is devoted to one of contemporary public discourse subtypes. Although it is perceived as marginal, the opinion polls show that it has a strong influence on a large part of society and some government decisions. The analysis is also important because of the polarization of social views in Poland.

Opis:
Sponsors of the petition called upon “the Town Council of Z. to consider the petition and to urgently adopt a resolution” with the content indicated therein. The Town Council considered itself not competent to consider the petition and forwarded it to the Sejm. When assessing the competence of the Sejm to consider the petition, it was pointed out that its formal addressee, i.e. the Town Council of Z., should be distinguished from the entity competent to consider the petition. Moreover, it was pointed out that the petition demanded the expression of the position on the policy directions of the Council of Ministers on vaccination against COVID-19, and the members of the Council of Ministers bear political responsibility before the Sejm. Therefore, it was considered that the subject of this petition falls within the tasks and competences of the Sejm.

Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) due to old age and comorbidities are at a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. These patients should protect themselves by limiting contact with other people to an absolute minimum and they should be educated about hygiene, including careful hand washing. In general, the principles of antiarrhythmic drug treatment of quarantined, infected and asymptomatic individuals remain unchanged. In the hospital setting it is important to remember about possible interactions between antibiotics, anticoagulants, antiarrhythmic, antiviral and antimalarial drugs. The current pandemic also led to limitations regarding the implantation and control of implantable devices to an absolute minimum.

Opis:
Starting in Wuhan in December 2019, and making its way all the way to Rome and New York in April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has put the states, alliances and others, square in the face of a serious challenge. However, the question that happens to be a stumbling block this time has never been posed as a problem or obstacle before - the question of public health; a question that has taught the European Union a lesson about what is a top priority and how all the other policies, plans and strategies may seem unimportant overnight. This paper provides an analysis on how the European Union coped with the global threat given its limited legal possibilities, and the unprecedented situation of its Member States becoming the second outbreak point of the pandemic. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic, once again, has opened up the question of solidarity and the coherence within the EU. The conclusions drawn from this research are of great importance as a way to show whether the EU will come out of this situation with a positive outcome, confirming its values of solidarity and coherence, or whether it will have to undertake drastic reforms in order to consolidate the latter.

Opis:
Study aim: Wrestling involves a high risk of transmission in terms of Covid-19 as it is performed using close one-to-one physical contact. This field research study examined wrestlers' approach to and awareness levels of the pandemic. Method: The study sample consists of 214 male wrestlers aged 19.15 ± 1.78 years who participated in the U-23 Turkish National Freestyle Wrestling Championship. The data was collected using a personal information form and the Pandemic Awareness Scale. The statistical analysis consisted of an independent sample t-test, descriptive statistics, and a One-Way ANOVA test for multi-group comparison. Results: Non-smokers and the wrestlers who complied with the precautions had statistically higher awareness score averages (p < 0.05). A statistically significant relationship between awareness scores and variables, including education level, being a national athlete, being diagnosed with Covid-19, losing a first-degree relative to Covid-19, having been vaccinated, and the number of vaccine doses (p > 0.05) was not found. Conclusion: The study findings indicate that the level of awareness of the pandemic is high among non-smokers and wrestlers who complied with the necessary precautions.

COVID-19 through Bolsonaro’s speech : old sources for a new disease

Opis:
In the context of Brazil's alarming COVID-19 death toll, metaphors in the discourse of former President Jair Bolsonaro seemed to minimize the magnitude of the pandemic scenario. Our goal is to analyse his use of figurative language in response to the widespread transmission of the virus in Brazil. We departed from the hypothesis that war, religion, and health mappings would be plentiful inBolsonaro’s speeches, considering his military past, religious beliefs, and the current pandemic. Our corpus consists of excerpts from Bolsonaro’s public speeches, ranging from March 10th, the day thes subject started to be addressed on the government website, to mid-August 2020, when Brazil surpassed 100,000 deaths. Bolsonaro's metaphorical utterances regarding COVID-19 were identified using the Metaphor Identification Procedure (Pragglejaz Group, 2007). In our results, WAR, a common source domain in politics, was one of the most used ones by Bolsonaro to talk about COVID-19 and its consequences. Linguistic instantiations of health and religious source domains were not frequent. Instead, religious beliefs came up as a frame that often underlies his speech. Moreover, results point to the possibility that Bolsonaro's speeches instantiate the Strict Father Model (Lakoff, 1996; 2004), a framework that describes conservative politics in the US.
