Opis:
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors have become essential considerations for stakeholders. Balancing external and internal performance is crucial. However, there are some constraints to implementing ESG at the corporate level, especially in Indonesia. This study aims to test the effect of ESG on corporate performance. The non-financial firms listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2016–2020 were used as a sample. Empirical evidence found the U-shaped effect of ESG rating on corporate performance. Further, robustness tests are conducted by dividing the sample annually and removing the 2020 period to show more robust evidence. In contrast, the results showed no evidence of a U-shaped effect. The robustness test showed that the ESG rating positively affected corporate performance in 2016–2019 and turned negative in 2020, the first time COVID-19 happened in Indonesia. This result indicated that in a crisis time, implementing ESG will be costly and reflected in financial performance. In contrast, during a non-crisis time, ESG positively impacts financial performance.

Opis:
Research background: Over the decades, foreign-owned entities (FOEs) have become an important part of the economic landscape considered as behemoths of globalisation, but also transmitters of positive effects such as technology or know-how spillovers. In times of volatility and uncertainty, firms’ contribution to building a resilient economy is at the top of the public agenda. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is two-fold. Firstly, we test, how FOEs perform in this stressful time of volatility and uncertainty. Secondly, we examine the contribution to resilience by digital and technologically intensive sectors.  Methods: The study utilises the Bureau van Dijk (BvD) Orbis firm-level database as a primary data source. The results are derived with the use of two econometric approaches. Firstly, we estimate a static model utilising the ordinary squares estimator. Secondly, we re-estimate the equations using a two-step System GMM estimator. It introduces a lagged dependent variable into the model and implements a correction for endogeneity among covariates by including instruments (in levels and differences). Findings & value added: We use size, age, ownership, gearing, and intangibility as firms’ financial performance determinants, together with the sector-, country- and time-fixed effects. FOEs compared to domestic ones generated a higher revenue growth rate. In times of crisis high-tech and digital firms are more resilient. However, ownership does not matter in this respect. We contribute to the discussion about functions performed by FOEs in crisis and turbulent times, in which resilience issues are on top of the agenda. Our research intends to bridge the gap between the performance of FOEs, micro-level analysis, and resilience.

Opis:
Constant change is typical of the current business environment. The ability to manage change is a highly appreciated managerial skill. Being adaptive has become a new competitive advantage of a company. Appropriately and successfully implemented changes can improve corporate performance. This paper aimed to evaluate how Slovak companies had been dealing with change in recent years; whether they had been prepared for it; what tools, methods and concepts they had used; and what ultimately had necessitated them from an economic point of view. The paper explored the current status of change management in the context of business processes particular to Slovak enterprises. A literature review concerning change and process management was provided in order to design appropriate research. The research focused on the level of process-oriented management of change in Slovak enterprises operating in different industrial sectors. The main research method was primary quantitative research via questionnaires. Outputs from the questionnaires were subsequently evaluated by contingency tables and the chi-square test which determined the level of significance via p-value. Research results presented in this paper confirmed a positive influence of business process change on process maturity and corporate performance. The paper contributed to the development of knowledge in the field of change management, namely, process-oriented change management. The creation of a change-based maturity model for enterprises was identified as a new direction for future work with practical implications.

Opis:
The increasing pressure of globalisation on the worldwide market has forced enterprises to shift their focus from product quality to effectiveness of internal business processes. The object of interest of this paper is a modern management approach based on corporate performance evaluation by measuring the performance of internal processes. The paper aims to prove that the use of modern indicators and the measurement of internal processes belong among factors that have a direct positive impact on corporate performance. To reach the aim, empirical primary research was carried out. The paper focused on research results regarding the use of modern indicators for the measurement of business processes in Slovak industrial enterprises from selected branches. The primary quantitative research was conducted using questionnaires. The research aimed to test the hypothesis stating that enterprises using modern indicators to measure process performance have been reaching more positive ROE values, representing a basic indicator of corporate performance. Dependences among the data selected from the empirical research were analysed using statistical methods, namely, the chi-squared test, T-test and the correlation analysis. Based on the statistically processed data, the authors concluded that business processes are a basic source for the evaluation of corporate performance. Higher ROE values can be reached using modern process indicators, especially in mass production enterprises. The paper contributed to the further development of knowledge in performance management, specifically, process-oriented management.

Opis:
Sustainable development became the subject of scientific analysis and key concept in management practice. The model of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) created in 60s and developed in 80s of 20 century, was criticized and re-defined. The paper presents characterizes of reconstruction CSR model in the way of (1) CSR 2.0, (2) CSV - Corporate Share Value and (3) CSP – Corporate Social Performance. On the practical level, scientists and practitioners agree that model created in Transnational Corporations and huge companies, should be implemented by other firms, especially SME’s. However, in such argumentation that SME’s are well-known actor in their communities and they are responsible from point of view “human nature”. Additionally, a lot of companies, even small and medium, realized model of cooperation or community building among stakeholders, what means that they realized new models of CSR without definitions of such process. The aim of the article is to analyses the role of SME’s in implementation of new concepts of CSR, as CSR 2.0, CSV or CSP. The case studies of firms in polish economic reality, small towns and villages and the case study of the tool which is used for building CSR model, should show the existing model of responsibility. The paper is based on ethnography and autoethnography methods. In both cases analysis are qualitative studies.

Opis:
It is extensively studied if the relationship between CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and CFP (Corporate Financial Performance) may be distinguished. All the evidence proving or denying the relationship is unambiguous. One of the biggest problems are the varied results connected with the lack of methods to compare CSR and CFP. The aim of this article is to indicate the importance of both, CSR and CFP. It is also important to mention the researchers’ subjectivity and bias of selection. Companies may improve their position in the market by paying more attention to CSR issues and that may positively influence their CFP, which is the main target for all organisations.
Artykuł analizuje związek pomiędzy społeczną odpowiedzialnością w biznesie a wynikami finansowymi przedsiębiorstw.

The sustainable gamer : developing Corporate Social Responsibility through games

Opis:
According to Wilson and Holton (Changing manager mindsets - Report of the working group on the development of professional skills for the practice of Corporate Social Responsibility (Department of Trade & Industry, The Corporate Responsibility Group), 2003), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) entails behaviour that can be learned, but is not easily taught. As a consequence, a question arises: Can attitudes, knowledge, and skills important for teaching sustainable development and CSR be acquired with the use of simulation games? Based on the dynamically evolving educational market, current developments in educational psychology and practical experience as game developers, we provide evidence that games offer a unique toolbox for teaching CSR both in academia and in the organisational context. This learning approach comprises the missing link proposed in this chapter. Even though all learning can be considered as learning from experience, there are significant qualities that make simulation games uniquely effective in teaching CSR. No other technique offers so many distinct features that can be employed in order to explore and understand CSR in practice—from gamified learning, to single-issue games, to complex system simulations. One of the qualities which characterises games is the potential to change participants’ mind-set with high fidelity simulations that allow them to discover complex relations and unexpected consequences of regular day-to-day business decisions, as well as to experience their long-term impact on the multiple bottom-line. In this chapter, we provide both theoretical and practical insights into how simulations can be used for skills and knowledge development crucial for implementing CSR in a given organisational context. Apart from explaining the mechanisms behind the effectiveness of simulation games, we provide examples of different CSR simulation games developed across the world.

Opis:
The interrelations between engagement in CSR activities and the company’s performance are still one of pivotal managerial problems. Ample findings related to this issue seem to reveal a rather hazy than clear picture. In this paper, an attempt has been made to complement this problematic issue with the results of the survey conducted among a group of Polish large and medium‑sized family businesses. The aim of the paper is to analyse relationships between the self‑assessment of the company’s performance and its engagement in various CSR activities. It seems to be interesting to identify what kind of relationship and mutual influences can be found between the company’s economic and non‑economic activities and whether its value aspects, in their broad meaning, exist. To identify this relationship, two groups of linear regression models were adopted (CSR activities or the self‑assessment of the company’s performance as dependent variables). The ultimate conclusion drawn seems to confirm that the problematic area mentioned above should be described rather by a circular than linear direction of influences which were called a multilevel chain of interferences.

Opis:
Aim: Building upon stakeholder and institutional theory, this paper investigates the relationship between product diversification and corporate social performance (CSP), thereby attempting to make essential contributions to the current literature. Based on an extensive literature review, it was expected that related, unrelated and total product diversification are positively related to CSP. Moreover, it was hypothesized that the exposure to weak institutional host country environments negatively affects the relationship between diversification and CSP, and that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have a positive effect on the relationship. Design / Research methods: The sample selected for this research is the non-renewable energy industry, since the industry shows great divergence in terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance. In addition, the industry is highly susceptible to regulatory changes, while the Sustainable Development Goals have an enormous focus on the reliability and sustainability of energy, making it a highly relevant industry to study. This study analyzed 40 a 40 non-renewable energy firms over a time frame of seven years, by using OLS regression. Conclusions / findings: The results reveal that unrelated diversification is positively related to CSP, while the other forms of diversification show insignificant results. Contrary to expectations, the Sustainable Development Goals negatively affect the relationship between product diversification and CSP, while the moderating effect of exposure to weak institutional environments is insignificant. Originality / value of the article: Research on the relationship between product diversification on corporate financial performance is well-established, but the way in which product diversification influences a firm’s behavior towards stakeholder demands and social concerns remains largely unexplored. Accordingly, the results of this study challenge existing theories while adding more context to the existing relationship, and in turn provide promising avenues for future research.
